A particular Escort RS Cosworth can sell for more than a new Mustang Dark Horse—but the comparison is about individual cars, not a universal price rule. At UK auctions, a 1994 Cosworth sold for £39,375 on 24 August 2025, while a 3,000-mile 1996 Cosworth Lux sold for £132,750 on 21 February 2026. The spread between those two results shows how much the specific example matters.
What the auction results actually show
| Car and sale | Reported result | Details in the listing |
|---|---|---|
| 1994 Escort RS Cosworth, Iconic Auctioneers’ Silverstone Festival sale, 24 August 2025; result reported by CLASSIC.COM | £39,375 | Manual, right-hand drive, described as original/highly original; 28,000 miles marked TMU. View the sale record. |
| 1996 Escort RS Cosworth Lux, Iconic Auctioneers’ Race Retro sale, 21 February 2026; result reported by CLASSIC.COM | £132,750 | 3,000 miles; manual, right-hand drive, described as original/highly original. View the sale record. |
These are completed UK auction sales of two different cars, more than five months apart. They do not establish a representative market range, and they are not interchangeable with a dealer asking price or a manufacturer’s suggested retail price. A separate Cosworth auction record is available from CLASSIC.COM, but the cited examples alone are too few to define typical values.
Why the Escort RS Cosworth attracts collector attention
It has a rally-homologation-era story
Ford’s historical account places the Escort RS Cosworth in the company’s 1992 rally-homologation program. The model was all-wheel drive and had factory output of 220 PS, according to Ford’s RS history. That motorsport connection gives the car a distinct place in Ford performance history; it does not, by itself, prove a particular car is rare or justify a particular asking price. Ford’s RS-model history.
The value belongs to the individual car
Collectors assess the condition and history of the actual vehicle, not just its badge. The two auction examples differ sharply in year and mileage, and their descriptions distinguish them as original or highly original. A buyer evaluating another Cosworth should verify its condition, originality and provenance, as well as the mileage and the documentation behind it. The supplied sale records do not quantify how much any one of those factors contributed to either result.

How the Mustang Dark Horse differs
The Dark Horse is a modern performance coupe sold as a new car, rather than a collectible rally-derived Ford changing hands at auction. In its North American launch announcement dated 14 September 2022, Ford described a modified 5.0-litre V8 projected to produce 500 horsepower, track-focused cooling, a standard six-speed manual and an available 10-speed automatic. Those are launch specifications, not a current price quote. Ford’s Dark Horse launch announcement.
That difference in purpose matters. A new Dark Horse is engineered for road and track use with factory support; a Cosworth’s auction value reflects the exact classic being sold, its history and the circumstances of the sale. One price cannot be inferred from the other.

Why this is not a like-for-like price comparison
- Sale price versus retail price: The Cosworth figures are completed auction results. A Dark Horse manufacturer price is a suggested retail figure, not an auction result.
- Market and currency: The Cosworth results are in UK pounds. Ford’s available Dark Horse retail announcements are regional: R$649,000 for the announced 2025 version in Brazil and ARS 128,500,000 as a suggested retail price announced in Argentina in August 2025. Neither is a US MSRP. See Ford Brazil’s announcement and Ford Argentina’s announcement.
- Different cars and dates: The 3,000-mile 1996 Lux is not a proxy for every Cosworth, and the 2022 launch specifications do not establish the Dark Horse’s current price in a buyer’s market.
- Auction outcomes can be exceptional: Discussing a Sierra Cosworth RS500 sale—not an Escort RS Cosworth—Hagerty UK Head of Valuations John Mayhead cautioned that two determined bidders were willing to pay more than the car might return if resold the next day. That observation is a reminder about auction outcomes, not evidence of a typical Escort value. Hagerty’s account.
What a buyer should compare
To decide whether a particular Cosworth costs more than a new Dark Horse for you, compare vehicles and transaction terms on the same basis. Start with a current Dark Horse price for your market and model year, then set it against the Cosworth’s verified sale or asking price in the same currency and geography. For the classic, establish condition, mileage, originality and provenance through the car’s records and an inspection. The available auction evidence does not provide a matched-market series or a current US Dark Horse price, so it cannot settle that comparison for every buyer.
