The “Tesla statue” in Palo Alto is a bronze monument to inventor Nikola Tesla—not the car company. The pose reflects the project’s artistic choice to focus on Tesla’s demonstrations involving wireless electricity. It is a memorial image, not evidence that practical wireless power transmission works as depicted.
Why is there a Tesla statue in Silicon Valley?
The project was organized by Dorrian Porter of Northern Imagination, with local developer Harold Hohbach involved in the site. Its stated aim was to honor Tesla and encourage ambitious, public-minded thinking about energy and wireless information. Porter described it as “a gesture to tell the story of the technology entrepreneur who existed long before a company — or even the Silicon Valley” (original Kickstarter campaign).
The statue was unveiled on December 7, 2013. IEEE Spectrum reported that the Kickstarter campaign raised $127,260 in 2013; Tesla Universe’s landmark record lists 722 backers (the record does not state a year for that figure) (IEEE Spectrum; Tesla Universe).

The project was designed to include a free Wi-Fi hotspot, alongside a time capsule intended to open on January 7, 2043 (IEEE Spectrum; Terry Guyer’s project archive). These are features described as part of the project; the available sources do not confirm that the hotspot is working today. The capsule’s date is its planned opening date, not confirmation of its present condition.
