New Zealand racer Shane Richardson, 29, and British rider Owen Jenner, 21, died after an 11-bike crash during a British Supersport Championship race at Oulton Park on 5 May 2025. Richardson was Hannah James’s partner and the father of their two children, according to BBC Sport. James had previously lost former partner Billy Redmayne, 24, in a 2016 motorcycle-racing crash, as reported by The Independent and LBC.
What happened at Oulton Park?
The crash happened on the first lap of the British Supersport Championship race at Oulton Park in Cheshire. BBC Sport reported that 11 bikes were involved. The race was abandoned while medical teams responded.
Reports citing the event organizers said Richardson was taken to the circuit medical centre with severe chest injuries and died while being transferred to Royal Stoke University Hospital. Jenner died after treatment for a catastrophic head injury.
The class matters: this was the British Supersport Championship, which BBC Sport describes as a support class to the main British Superbike series. Richardson and Jenner were not competing in the main Superbike class.

Former rider and MLav Racing owner Michael Laverty told BBC Sport, discussing the risk of a fallen rider being struck in a mass-start incident: “There’s no way possible in our sport to mitigate for that circumstance.” This was his comment on the risk, not an official finding about what caused the Oulton Park crash.
