Volvo Cars makes Volvo passenger vehicles, but it is owned by Zhejiang Geely Holding, usually called Geely Holding. Volvo Cars is a Swedish-founded, publicly listed automaker headquartered in Gothenburg, Sweden, with vehicle-production plants in Sweden, Belgium, the United States, and China.

That does not mean every Volvo is made in Sweden—or that Geely directly builds every Volvo. The assembly plant depends on the model, model year, powertrain, market, and production period.

The short answer

Volvo Cars is the company responsible for Volvo-branded passenger cars and SUVs. Geely Holding acquired Volvo Cars from Ford Motor Company in 2010. Volvo Cars remains a separately listed company on Nasdaq Stockholm under the ticker VOLCAR B.

Volvo Cars currently identifies production operations in these locations:

  • Gothenburg, Sweden
  • Ghent, Belgium
  • Ridgeville near Charleston, South Carolina, United States
  • Chengdu, China
  • Daqing, China
  • Taizhou, China

The best general description is therefore: Volvo is a Swedish-founded automaker owned by Geely Holding and supported by a multinational manufacturing network. Volvo’s own corporate overview explains the company’s ownership history, Swedish base, and global production footprint in more detail in its company overview.

Who owns Volvo Cars?

Zhejiang Geely Holding Group owns Volvo Cars. Geely Holding is a Chinese automotive group. It acquired Volvo Cars from Ford in 2010, after Ford had owned the passenger-car business for roughly a decade.

Ownership and manufacturing are separate questions. Geely Holding’s ownership does not mean that every Volvo is assembled in a Geely factory, nor does it erase Volvo Cars’ own corporate identity, engineering operations, or Swedish heritage. Volvo Cars operates as its own listed automaker and manages the production of Volvo passenger vehicles.

Volvo Cars is not the same as Volvo Group

The name “Volvo” creates a common source of confusion. Volvo Cars makes passenger vehicles such as Volvo cars and SUVs. Volvo Group is a separate Swedish corporate group primarily associated with trucks, buses, construction equipment, and other commercial or industrial products.

Volvo Cars and Volvo Group share the Volvo trademark through Volvo Trademark Holding AB, but they are not the same automaker. Saying “Volvo makes trucks” generally refers to Volvo Group; saying “Volvo makes the XC90” refers to Volvo Cars.

Volvo’s ownership timeline

Year What happened
1927 The first Volvo car left the production line in Gothenburg, Sweden.
Until 1999 Volvo Cars was part of the Swedish Volvo Group.
1999 Ford Motor Company bought Volvo Cars.
2010 Geely Holding acquired Volvo Cars from Ford.
Today Volvo Cars is a separately listed company, with Geely Holding as its owner or controlling owner.

This history explains why Volvo can be accurately described as Swedish in origin and corporate heritage while also being owned by a Chinese automotive group and manufacturing vehicles in several countries.

Where are Volvo cars built?

Gothenburg, Sweden

Gothenburg is Volvo Cars’ historic home. It is the company’s main headquarters and an important center for product development, marketing, and administration. The first Volvo car was produced there in 1927.

Gothenburg’s importance does not mean that all current Volvos are assembled in Sweden. It is more accurate to associate the city with Volvo Cars’ heritage, headquarters, and engineering organization than to treat it as the source of every Volvo sold worldwide.

Ghent, Belgium

Ghent is one of Volvo Cars’ major European vehicle-production sites. Volvos built there may be sold in European markets or exported elsewhere, depending on the vehicle program and production arrangements.

Ridgeville, South Carolina

Volvo Cars’ U.S. manufacturing plant is in Ridgeville, outside Charleston, South Carolina. Volvo says the facility has installed capacity of approximately 150,000 vehicles per year.

The plant currently produces the fully electric Volvo EX90 SUV and the Polestar 3. Volvo began EX90 production at the South Carolina site in 2024 and has invested in battery-pack production as well as upgrades to the plant’s body and paint shops. The company’s announcement about the facility is available in its South Carolina manufacturing update.

Volvo has also announced plans for the XC60 mid-size SUV to enter South Carolina production from late 2026, along with a new next-generation hybrid model planned before 2030. These are announced plans, not proof that those vehicles were already being built there. Production schedules can change.

In March 2026, Volvo Cars and Polestar also said they planned to consolidate global Polestar 3 production at Ridgeville. At that time, the Polestar 3 was also being produced in Chengdu. This announcement concerns Polestar as well as Volvo Cars’ manufacturing operations; it does not mean that every Volvo model is made in South Carolina.

Chengdu, China

Chengdu is one of Volvo Cars’ Chinese vehicle-production locations. Volvo described it as the company’s first complete manufacturing plant outside Europe when it opened.

Production at Chengdu should not be confused with the ownership answer. A Volvo assembled in China is still a Volvo Cars vehicle, while the plant location is simply the location of assembly for that model and production period.

Daqing, China

Daqing is another Volvo Cars production site identified in the company’s current global manufacturing list. Which models are built there can change as Volvo adjusts production among plants and markets, so a country-level statement should not be treated as a permanent model-by-model rule.

Taizhou, China

Taizhou is also part of Volvo Cars’ Chinese production network. Volvo has described the facility as its first climate-neutral car factory in China after switching from natural gas to biogas.

Why the same Volvo model may come from different countries

A Volvo’s badge does not identify its assembly plant by itself. Production can vary according to:

  • Model: Different Volvo models are assigned to different factories.
  • Model year and production date: A manufacturing allocation can change during a model’s life.
  • Powertrain: Electric, plug-in hybrid, mild-hybrid, and gasoline versions may not follow the same production route.
  • Sales market: A vehicle for the United States may be built at a different plant from a similar vehicle for Europe or China.
  • Export destination and production capacity: Volvo can use its international network to supply regional demand.

Consequently, “Where is the Volvo XC60 made?” or “Is this EX90 made in America?” requires a model-specific and market-specific answer. A general statement about Volvo’s country of origin cannot replace the vehicle’s actual production information.

If the assembly location matters for a particular purchase, check the vehicle’s official build information, window sticker, identification label, or documentation for that specific vehicle rather than relying only on the Volvo badge. The precise answer can depend on the vehicle’s production period and destination.

Swedish engineering is not the same as Swedish assembly

Volvo remains strongly associated with Sweden because its history began in Gothenburg, its headquarters are there, and the company retains major product-development functions in Sweden. But these are different facts from the country where a particular vehicle is assembled.

A Volvo can have Swedish brand heritage and engineering responsibility while being assembled in Belgium, the United States, or China. Calling every Volvo “made in Sweden” is too broad; calling a Volvo “built by Geely” is also imprecise. The more accurate wording is that Volvo Cars is Swedish-founded, Geely-owned, and internationally manufactured.

What about Volvo accessories and electric-vehicle charging?

Manufacturing origin should not be used as a shortcut for deciding whether an accessory fits. Cargo equipment, roof accessories, charging cables, and home chargers must be matched to the specific Volvo model, connector, voltage, market, and installation requirements.

For fitment and warranty-sensitive purchases, start with Volvo’s genuine Volvo accessories information or an authorized retailer. For an electric Volvo such as the EX90, confirm the vehicle’s charging compatibility and local electrical requirements before selecting a cable or wallbox. A product carrying the Volvo name is not automatically suitable for every Volvo EV or every household installation.

Does Geely build Volvo cars?

Geely Holding owns Volvo Cars, but that is not the same as saying Geely directly builds every Volvo. Volvo Cars is the passenger-car company responsible for Volvo vehicles and its manufacturing network. Some manufacturing relationships may exist within a wider automotive group, but the correct ownership statement is simply that Volvo Cars is owned by Geely Holding.

Are Volvo cars still Swedish?

Volvo is Swedish in origin and remains headquartered in Gothenburg, with important Swedish product-development and corporate functions. However, Volvo Cars is not exclusively Swedish-owned or exclusively assembled in Sweden. Its current ownership and production network are international.

Are all Volvo cars made in China?

No. Volvo Cars builds vehicles in Sweden, Belgium, the United States, and China. The plant depends on the model, market, powertrain, and production date.
