CFMOTO, a Chinese manufacturer founded in Hangzhou in 1989, makes them. The 700CL-X is a credible, well-equipped middleweight with competitive performance, but whether it is a good buy depends heavily on local dealer support, warranty terms, parts supply and the amount of long-term reliability evidence available in your market.
Who makes CLX motorcycles?
The 700CL-X is a CFMOTO-branded motorcycle. CFMOTO is the international brand of Zhejiang Chunfeng Power Co., Ltd., which began as a component workshop in Hangzhou and grew into a powersports manufacturer.

CFMOTO also has a formal relationship with KTM. CFMOTO and KTM established the CFMOTO-KTMR2R joint venture in 2018 for motorcycle development and production. That relationship should not be reduced to “KTM makes the CLX.” The 700CL-X remains a CFMOTO motorcycle; the joint venture is part of the companies’ broader manufacturing and technology cooperation.
CFMOTO’s manufacturing base is in China. Individual components, final specifications and assembly arrangements can vary by model year and market, so the identification plate, local importer and dealer documentation are the best way to confirm a particular motorcycle’s origin.

What is the CFMOTO 700CL-X?
The 700CL-X is a middleweight road-bike family offered in three versions:
| Version | Positioning | What to verify locally |
|---|---|---|
| 700CL-X Heritage | Road-oriented, retro-styled member of the family | Exact equipment, colors, model year and price |
| 700CL-X Sport | More road-focused, sporty version | Electronic features, suspension and warranty conditions |
| 700CL-X Adventure | Light-adventure-oriented version | Wheel, protection, luggage and market-specific equipment |
CFMOTO’s 2021 launch material lists a liquid-cooled 693cc parallel-twin engine producing 55 kW (73 hp) and 68 Nm. Those are quoted launch figures, not a guarantee that every later model year or market has identical calibration, equipment or homologation.
The family’s appeal is the combination of a familiar middleweight engine layout, modern electronics and distinctive styling. The specification can look generous for the price, but equipment and availability differ by country and year.

Are CFMOTO 700CL-X motorcycles any good?
A fair answer is “yes, for the right buyer.” Independent coverage from Motorcycle News describes the Chinese-built 700CL-X as offering strong value through its price and specification for the displacement and performance. That is a road-test assessment of value and riding character, not proof of a universal reliability record.
CFMOTO’s own material emphasizes manufacturing quality and support. In the CFMOTO-KTM joint-venture announcement, KTM Sportmotorcycle AG Managing Director Florian Burguet said: “We have been very positively impressed by CFMoto’s quality of manufacture, attention to detail, and engineering capability.” This is an executive statement from a business partner, so it should be read alongside independent tests and owner experience rather than as a durability guarantee.
Where the CL-X makes a strong case
- Modern middleweight performance from the 693cc parallel twin.
- Distinctive Heritage, Sport and Adventure styling instead of one generic trim.
- Electronic equipment and specification that can be competitive with established rivals.
- Value pricing, according to independent road-test coverage, when compared with motorcycles of similar displacement and equipment.
What the evidence does not prove
- There is no authoritative fleet failure-rate statistic establishing the 700CL-X as more reliable than Honda, Yamaha or Kawasaki alternatives.
- A positive launch review does not establish maintenance costs or durability over a decade of ownership.
- A KTM partnership does not mean the bike is a KTM model or that every component is KTM-designed.
Is the 700CL-X reliable?
Reliability should be treated as a market-specific ownership question rather than a simple brand label. The available evidence supports confidence in CFMOTO’s engineering capability, but it does not provide a definitive, independently verified long-term failure rate for the 700CL-X.

- Comprehensive troubleshooting and fault-finding guides to quickly diagnose problems and reduce costly downtime.
Before buying, check whether a nearby authorized dealer can diagnose the motorcycle, perform scheduled service and process warranty claims. Ask how quickly common service parts, crash-damaged bodywork and electronic components can be obtained. Search owner reports from the same country and model year; a report about an earlier or differently specified bike may not apply to yours.
Warranty and dealer support
Warranty terms are not universal. CFMOTO’s Australian 700CL-X Sport information describes a three-year warranty structure tied to authorized servicing and an accurate service history. That example does not automatically apply in the United States, the United Kingdom or any other country.

Heritage, Sport or Adventure: which 700CL-X fits?
Choose the Heritage for primarily road use and retro character
The Heritage is the natural choice if styling, everyday road riding and the classic CL-X look matter more than trail equipment. Confirm its local seat height, suspension specification and available accessories rather than relying on photos from another country.
Choose the Sport for sharper road riding
The Sport is aimed at riders who prioritize a more athletic road presentation. The Australian Sport information lists electronic features, but the exact package varies by market and model year. A test ride is important because riding position, suspension setup and throttle response affect comfort as much as the equipment list.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteChoose the Adventure for light-adventure use
The Adventure is the family’s light-adventure option. It may be the better match for unpaved roads and touring, but verify the actual wheels, protection, suspension travel, luggage mounts and tire fitment in your market. “Adventure” does not by itself make a motorcycle suitable for severe off-road riding.

What to check before buying a CLX
- Confirm the exact motorcycle. Record the model year, version, engine specification and local homologation; “700CL-X” covers several trims.
- Ride it at realistic speeds. Evaluate clutch action, fueling, vibration, wind protection, seat comfort and low-speed balance.
- Inspect the support network. Call the selling dealer about routine parts, diagnostic equipment, recalls and typical warranty turnaround.
- Read the warranty conditions. Pay particular attention to service-record requirements and exclusions.
- Price the ownership package. Include scheduled service, tires, insurance, luggage, protection and delivery—not only the advertised motorcycle price.
- Check owner evidence. Give more weight to repeated reports from the same market and model year than to isolated internet anecdotes.
How the 700CL-X compares with established alternatives
Compare motorcycles on more than horsepower or purchase price. The important questions are:
- Does the competing bike offer equivalent equipment for the same money?
- Which engine character and ergonomics suit your riding?
- How strong is the local dealer network and parts inventory?
- What does the written warranty require?
- How much documented long-term ownership information exists for that exact model?
A Honda, Yamaha or Kawasaki may have a deeper local service network or longer-established owner history, while a CL-X may offer more equipment or distinctive styling for the money. The better choice depends on the support you can actually access and the riding role you need it to perform.
Bottom line
CFMOTO makes the 700CL-X motorcycles in China; KTM does not manufacture them as KTM-branded bikes. The Heritage, Sport and Adventure models deliver credible middleweight performance, modern features and attractive value. They are worth considering, but buy the local package—not just the specification sheet. Verify dealer competence, parts availability, warranty rules and model-year details, and treat long-term reliability claims cautiously because no authoritative fleet failure-rate comparison is established.
