AUDI AG is responsible for the Audi brand, its vehicle engineering and much of its manufacturing. However, Volkswagen Group shares platforms, powertrains, factories and production capacity across its brands. As a result, an Audi vehicle can be built at an Audi-owned plant or at a factory operated by another Volkswagen Group company.

Where are Audi cars built?
Audi’s current production network includes three principal German locations and manufacturing sites in several other countries. The model-to-plant assignments below come from Audi’s current site information.
| Plant | Country | Audi models currently listed there |
|---|---|---|
| Ingolstadt | Germany | A3, Q3, A6 e-tron and Q6 e-tron. Audi says production of the A2 e-tron is scheduled to begin in 2026. |
| Neckarsulm | Germany | A5, A6, A8 and e-tron GT. |
| Zwickau | Germany | Q4 e-tron. The plant operates within Volkswagen Sachsen’s electric-vehicle manufacturing network. |
| Győr | Hungary | Q3, Q3 Sportback and their e-hybrid versions. The site also makes engines, electric drives and components for Audi and other Volkswagen Group brands. |
| Bratislava | Slovakia | Q7 and Q8, built at the Volkswagen plant in Bratislava alongside vehicles for other Volkswagen Group brands. |
| San José Chiapa | Mexico | Q5 SUV and Q5 Sportback. |
| São José dos Pinhais, near Curitiba | Brazil | Q3 and Q3 Sportback. |
| Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, formerly Aurangabad | India | Q3, Q3 Sportback, Q5, Q7, A4 Sedan and A6 Sedan for the Indian market. |
Audi production in Germany
Ingolstadt
Ingolstadt is Audi’s headquarters and one of its most important manufacturing centers. The plant currently builds the A3, Q3, A6 e-tron and Q6 e-tron. Audi also lists the A2 e-tron as scheduled to enter production there in 2026.
Neckarsulm
Neckarsulm builds larger and higher-performance Audi models, including the A5, A6, A8 and e-tron GT. The site has a long history of producing Audi’s upper-market cars and is closely associated with the brand’s performance and luxury manufacturing operations.

The Q4 e-tron is built at Zwickau in eastern Germany. This is not an Audi-only factory: it is operated within Volkswagen Sachsen’s electric-vehicle manufacturing network and produces electric vehicles for the Volkswagen Group.
Which Audis are made outside Germany?
Hungary: Győr
Audi’s Győr plant produces the Q3, Q3 Sportback and their e-hybrid versions. It is also a major powertrain and component location, supplying engines, electric drives and other parts for Audi and Volkswagen Group vehicles.
Slovakia: Bratislava
The Q7 and Q8 are produced at Volkswagen’s Bratislava plant. The facility builds vehicles for four Volkswagen Group brands, so an Audi assembled there shares the site with products from other marques.
Mexico: San José Chiapa
Audi’s Mexican facility in San José Chiapa builds the Q5 SUV and Q5 Sportback. The plant is therefore not limited to older descriptions of Q5 production; Audi’s current information lists both body styles.
Brazil: São José dos Pinhais
The Audi plant near Curitiba, in São José dos Pinhais, produces the Q3 and Q3 Sportback for the Brazilian market.
India: Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar
Selected Audi models for India are assembled at the Škoda Auto Volkswagen India factory in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, the city formerly known as Aurangabad. Current listed models include the Q3, Q3 Sportback, Q5, Q7, A4 Sedan and A6 Sedan.
Where are Audi cars made in China?
Audi manufactures vehicles in China through joint ventures with FAW and SAIC. Audi identifies seven production sites across six Chinese locations: Changchun, Foshan, Tianjin, Qingdao, Anting in Shanghai and Ningbo.
| Location | Examples of Audi vehicles produced |
|---|---|
| Changchun | Q6L e-tron, Q6L Sportback e-tron and A6L e-tron |
| Foshan | Q2L and Q4 e-tron |
| Tianjin | Q3 and Q3 Sportback |
| Qingdao | A3 Sportback and A3L Sedan |
| Anting, Shanghai | A7L and Q5 e-tron |
| Ningbo | Q6 Roadjet |
The China-only AUDI E5 Sportback is also produced in Anting by SAIC. This vehicle uses the uppercase “AUDI” branding and belongs to a separate sister-brand initiative created by Audi and SAIC for China. It should not be confused with the standard four-ring Audi brand sold in global markets.
Does Volkswagen build Audi cars?
Sometimes. The answer depends on the factory and the market:
Rank #2
- V8 POWER: The model features a 400 cubic inch V8 engine, reflecting the muscle and power that defined the GTO's reputation.
- DETAILED SUSPENSION & EXHAUST: The kit incorporates separate rear suspension and exhaust detailing, adding to the realism of the model.
- BUCKET SEATS & CONSOLE: The model's interior features bucket seats and a floor shifter with a console, capturing the iconic look and feel of the GTO.
- OPTIONAL SUPERCHARGER: For those seeking more power, the kit offers an optional supercharger, allowing you to customize your model.

- AUDI AG builds vehicles at Audi’s German plants and at Audi-operated international facilities such as Győr and San José Chiapa.
- Volkswagen Group factories build some Audi models alongside Volkswagen, Škoda, SEAT/CUPRA or other Group vehicles. The Q4 e-tron at Zwickau and the Q7 and Q8 at Bratislava are examples.
- Joint-venture companies manufacture Audi vehicles in China through FAW-Volkswagen and SAIC Volkswagen.
- Škoda Auto Volkswagen India Private Limited builds selected Audi models for India at Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar.
Therefore, “made by Audi” describes the brand and vehicle program, but the legal manufacturing company and factory operator can differ from one model or country to another.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Are all Audis made in Germany?
No. Germany remains central to Audi production, but Audi cars are also made in Hungary, Slovakia, Mexico, Brazil, India and China. The country of assembly does not by itself indicate whether a vehicle is genuine, inferior or intended for a different market.
Production assignments can change when Audi introduces a new generation, adds an electric version, changes body styles or reallocates vehicles between plants. Even the same model name may be built in different locations for different markets.
How to find where a specific Audi was built
A model’s general production location is useful, but it cannot always identify the factory for an individual car. To check a particular vehicle:
- Locate the vehicle identification number, or VIN. It may appear at the base of the windshield, on the driver’s door-frame label or in the registration documents.
- Ask an Audi dealer or the manufacturer for the vehicle’s build information using that VIN.
- Check the original build sheet, certification label and delivery paperwork.
- Confirm the market and production year, because the same model can have different assembly locations across countries and generations.
Do not rely only on a generic internet VIN decoder. Those tools can identify a model and some specification data, but they may not provide a definitive final-assembly location.
What happened to Audi’s Brussels plant?
Brussels should not be listed as a current Audi vehicle-production site. Audi discontinued vehicle production there during the first quarter of 2025. Older articles may still mention Brussels, particularly in connection with the Q8 e-tron, but that information is no longer current.
