Michael Frank Goodwin was convicted of arranging the murders of Mickey and Trudy Thompson. A Los Angeles jury found Goodwin guilty in January 2007, and he received two consecutive life sentences without parole. California’s Second District Court of Appeal upheld the convictions in 2015.
But there is an important distinction: Goodwin was not publicly identified as one of the two men who physically ambushed the Thompsons. The masked attackers escaped on bicycles and were never apprehended in the public record reviewed for this case. So the most precise answer is: Goodwin was convicted as the person who arranged the killings, while the actual shooters remain unidentified.

The driveway ambush that killed Mickey and Trudy Thompson
Mickey Thompson and his wife, Trudy, were shot outside their home in Bradbury, California, during the early morning of March 16, 1988. They were preparing to leave for work when two attackers ambushed them in the driveway.

The attackers reportedly fled on ten-speed bicycles. The scene did not fit a straightforward robbery: money and jewelry were left behind, which led investigators to consider whether the killings were targeted rather than opportunistic. Contemporary reporting described the gunmen as masked or hooded men who escaped before police could identify them. (Los Angeles Times contemporary report)
#1 Best Overall
The crime was especially shocking because Mickey Thompson was one of the best-known figures in American motorsports. He was a driver, car builder, race promoter, track operator, tire entrepreneur and land-speed-record pioneer. In 1960, his Challenger 1 reached 406.60 mph at Bonneville, making Thompson the first American to exceed 400 mph in a piston-powered vehicle on a one-way run, according to the NHRA’s account of his career.
Why did investigators focus on Michael Goodwin?
Thompson and Goodwin had entered a business venture involving stadium motorsports events. The partnership deteriorated within months and led to extensive litigation. The California appellate record describes a bitter business dispute, lawsuits and financial consequences for Goodwin. Contemporary coverage reported a judgment against him of more than $500,000, with interest and legal fees increasing the amount. (California appellate case summary)
Prosecutors argued that the failed relationship and resulting legal and financial pressure gave Goodwin a motive for revenge. They presented testimony from people who said Goodwin had expressed hostility toward Thompson or made threats. The prosecution also introduced evidence relating to Goodwin’s finances, his alleged connection to weapons and investigative activity that continued after the original inquiry stalled. (Los Angeles Times report on the conviction and appeal)

The motive was part of the prosecution’s circumstantial case. Was Michael Goodwin one of the shooters?
The available legal record does not identify Goodwin as one of the two bicycle-riding gunmen. Nor does it establish the identities of those gunmen.

The prosecution’s case was not based on an eyewitness who saw Goodwin pull the trigger. Instead, prosecutors argued that Goodwin arranged or procured the murders and used other people to carry them out. That is why “Goodwin killed Mickey Thompson” can be misleading if it is understood to mean that he was physically present and shot the victims.
The careful wording is that Goodwin was convicted of arranging the murders of Mickey and Trudy Thompson. The two men who carried out the attack were never apprehended or publicly identified in the sources reviewed here.
How did the cold case investigation turn?
The killings remained unresolved for years. According to Netflix’s official account of the case, detective Mark Lillienfeld revisited the investigation after the original officer in charge retired. Lillienfeld reviewed the evidence and later developed a relationship with Goodwin after Goodwin returned to the United States.
That renewed investigative effort eventually led to charges more than 13 years after the murders. Goodwin was initially pursued in Orange County, but that prosecution was dismissed on venue-related grounds. Los Angeles County then brought the case because the murders occurred in Bradbury, within Los Angeles County. (Netflix Tudum’s official case overview)
The long delay is one reason the case can appear more mysterious than the eventual legal result. The shooting itself was never solved through the arrest of the two visible attackers. Instead, the prosecution built a later case around the alleged organizer and the circumstances surrounding the Thompson-Goodwin business conflict.

What happened at Goodwin’s trial?
A Los Angeles jury convicted Michael Goodwin on January 4, 2007, of murdering both Mickey and Trudy Thompson. The jury also found special allegations involving multiple murders and lying in wait.
In March 2007, a judge sentenced Goodwin to two consecutive life terms without the possibility of parole. Goodwin maintained that he was innocent and had an alibi. He continued to deny responsibility at sentencing. (Los Angeles Times report on the sentence)
The case was circumstantial. In practical terms, that means the jury was asked to draw conclusions from a combination of evidence rather than rely on a direct identification of Goodwin at the scene. A circumstantial case can still support a conviction; the legal question is whether the evidence, considered as a whole, proves guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
Did an appeals court overturn the conviction?
No. In January 2015, California’s Second District Court of Appeal affirmed the judgment.
Goodwin challenged the conviction on several grounds, including claims involving insufficient evidence, prosecutorial misconduct, evidentiary rulings, the delay before prosecution and the exclusion of evidence concerning possible third-party culpability. The appellate court rejected those arguments and left the convictions in place. (Los Angeles Times coverage of the appellate decision)
An affirmed conviction is the current legal status reflected in the cited record. It does not change the unresolved identity of the two physical shooters, and it does not mean every disputed detail of the investigation is universally accepted.
What does Goodwin’s defense say?
Goodwin and his supporters have continued to argue that the conviction was wrongful and that investigators failed to pursue alternative suspects or adequately present third-party-culpability evidence. Those arguments appear in defense-oriented materials, including a defense-oriented publication about the case.
These claims should be described as arguments by Goodwin or his supporters, not as established findings. The appellate court reviewed similar categories of challenge and affirmed the convictions. There is also no reliable basis in the reviewed sources for naming a particular alternative suspect as one of the bicycle-riding gunmen.

The Thompson case appears in Episode 2 of Netflix’s series, titled “Race Car Killer.” Netflix’s synopsis emphasizes the unusual bicycle escape, the abandoned-robbery theory, the early suspicion surrounding Goodwin, his alibi and time outside the country, and Mark Lillienfeld’s later investigative work. It should not, however, be treated as a replacement for the legal record. For the conviction, sentence and appellate issues, the California appellate decision is the more authoritative source. As with any true-crime production, viewers should distinguish between narration, interviews, investigative theory and facts established in court. The documentary may discuss theories surrounding the unknown attackers, but the public record reviewed here does not establish their names.
