The statement deliberately focused on grief, admiration, and Combs’ long-standing dream of becoming the fastest woman on Earth. It did not speculate about the crash because authorities had not yet released a cause. Later investigators reported that a mechanical failure involving the vehicle’s front wheel was the likely trigger.

The statement also described Combs’ ambition to become the fastest woman on Earth as her most notable dream, a goal she had pursued since 2012. It presented her fans and followers as part of a broader community connected by adventure, motorsports, and a passion for making things.
That distinction matters. The family’s message was a confirmation and tribute, not an accident report. At the time it was released, officials had not publicly established what caused the crash. The statement did not claim that the family knew the precise sequence of events, nor did it endorse later interpretations of the investigation.
What happened in the Alvord Desert
Combs was driving the North American Eagle, a vehicle built around a former Lockheed F-104 Starfighter jet engine, during a record attempt on a dry lake surface. The project had been pursuing the women’s land-speed record for years, and Combs had become closely associated with its technical and promotional work.

In November 2019, reporting on the Harney County Sheriff’s Office investigation said investigators believed the vehicle’s front wheel suffered a mechanical failure, most likely after striking an object on the desert surface. That later finding should be kept separate from the family’s initial statement, which expressly said that crash details were not yet available.
Secondary summaries have also described blunt-force trauma to the head before the vehicle was engulfed by fire. Because the underlying coroner record is not included in the available source material, the most cautious account is to rely primarily on the sheriff’s reported mechanical-failure finding rather than present a more detailed reconstruction as settled fact.

Why Jessi Combs was already well known
Combs’ reputation extended well beyond the record attempt. According to her official biography, she worked as a professional racer, metal fabricator, television personality, and brand representative.
Television audiences saw her on programs including Xtreme 4×4, Overhaulin’, MythBusters, All Girls Garage, and The List. Her screen appearances helped make technical automotive work accessible to viewers who might not otherwise have encountered fabrication, welding, vehicle construction, or land-speed racing.

Her hands-on identity was especially important. Combs was not known only for driving finished vehicles; she was also associated with building, modifying, and understanding them. She encouraged women and girls to enter automotive, mechanical, and fabrication fields at a time when those spaces were still often portrayed as exclusively male.
That work included a documented relationship with Lincoln Electric, which promoted a Jessi Combs line of women’s welding apparel, including jackets and gloves designed with women’s sizing in mind. The significance was larger than any single product: Combs helped make protective equipment and technical careers more visible to women who wanted to work in fabrication.
Her record was recognized after her death
The family statement described Combs as pursuing the dream of becoming the fastest woman on Earth. That goal was later formally recognized.

The Jessi Combs Foundation’s account of her legacy says she achieved an overall women’s land-speed record of 522.783 mph, or 841.338 kph, on August 27, 2019, before the fatal accident on her final run. Guinness World Records later accepted the achievement posthumously, with the recognition reported in June 2020.
The wording is important: the run occurred before the crash, but the official recognition came later. It is therefore more precise to call it a posthumously recognized Guinness women’s land-speed record than to suggest that the certification happened while Combs was alive.
The recognition also gave the family’s original statement a later historical context. What had been described in 2019 as an unfinished dream was ultimately recorded as an achievement, even though Combs did not survive to receive the official recognition herself.
How Combs’ family and friends continued her legacy
The Jessi Combs Foundation was founded in 2019 by friends, family members, and supporters. Its stated mission is to educate, inspire, and empower the next generation of female trailblazers and stereotype-breakers.
The foundation supports that mission through scholarships, educational partnerships, workshops, grants, and event sponsorships. Its board includes relatives as well as people who worked with or supported Combs, reflecting the community emphasized in the family’s original statement.

One of the earliest public efforts to preserve her work was the September 2019 JESSI COMBS: LIFE AT FULL SPEED exhibit at the Petersen Automotive Museum. The exhibit helped place her vehicles, tools, career, and record project in a broader account of automotive history rather than treating the crash as the whole story.

Why the family’s wording remains significant
The statement’s central message was not simply that Combs had died while chasing speed. It framed her as someone whose ambition had encouraged other people to attempt work that seemed inaccessible or impossible.
Pairing mourning with celebration also avoided defining her solely by a fatal accident. Combs’ career included racing, welding, vehicle fabrication, television, and advocacy. The later record recognition, foundation work, museum exhibit, and documentary each extended that broader story.
