WhistlinDiesel’s Cybertruck tow receiver broke away while Cody Detwiler tried to pull a stuck Ford F-150 off an obstacle course in an August 2024 durability-test video. The rear structure appeared to split, but the truck had already struck a concrete abutment during the stunts. The incident shows a serious failure in that sequence—not proof that an undamaged Cybertruck will fail while towing a load within Tesla’s limits.
What broke in the WhistlinDiesel video?
Road & Track reported that the F-150 became stuck after a simulated pothole challenge over four-foot culverts. When the Cybertruck made its first pull to recover it, the bumper and hitch broke away; the rear appeared to split. Detwiler was quoted as saying, “Our whole frame just snapped!” Road & Track also reported his concern that “There are critical failures on the Cybertruck that need to be addressed.” Those quotations are reported by Road & Track, not independently transcribed here from the video. Notebookcheck likewise described the rear casting breaking during the attempted rescue and noted that the video included other intentionally harsh tests. It reported that Detwiler later took the damaged truck to Tesla for repair ahead of a second installment. Notebookcheck’s report
Was it a normal towing test?
No. This was a recovery pull during a series of extreme stunts, not a documented standard trailer tow. The reporting says the Cybertruck’s rear hit a concrete abutment as it came off the culvert challenge. It is unclear whether that impact—or other cumulative stress—had already weakened the structure before the F-150 recovery attempt. The available accounts provide no measured force, controlled test protocol, or confirmed undamaged starting condition, so they cannot establish what caused the break or quantify the load on the receiver. A recovery yank and sustained trailer towing create different load histories. The video therefore does not establish that a Cybertruck failed while towing a normal load within its configuration-specific rating.
What is the Cybertruck’s towing capacity?
Tesla’s current Cybertruck towing guide lists different maximums by configuration. These are maximum towing capacities, not a guarantee that every truck can tow that amount in every loaded condition. Tesla’s Cybertruck towing guide

Tesla says tongue weight must not exceed 10% of maximum towing capacity, and the truck’s gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) must not be exceeded. Passengers, cargo, or equipment in the Cybertruck can reduce the tongue weight it can handle, which can also reduce the practical towing capacity. A hitch-mounted carrier may have a lower maximum acceptable weight than the vehicle’s full tongue-weight rating. Check the guide for the specific configuration and setup rather than treating the 11,000-pound figure as universal.
What does Tesla tell owners to do before towing?
Tesla warns, “Do not tow with Cybertruck if you do not have towing knowledge and experience; doing so may result in damage, injury or death.” Its guide also calls for using Trailer Mode, checking connections, safety chains, lights and trailer brakes, setting tire pressure for towing, avoiding sudden maneuvers, and allowing more following distance. The receiver accepts a 2-inch (5 cm) ball mount, which Tesla says is sold separately. Select a mount and other towing equipment for the actual trailer and setup, following the manufacturer’s instructions; a ball mount does not prevent structural failure.
Does a later test show the hitch fails below its rating?
A March 2025 JerryRigEverything video page is titled “SHOULD YOU TOW WITH A CYBERTRUCK?! – (catastrophic failure test).” Its description claims the hitch broke at around 10,000 pounds and contrasts that figure with an 11,000-pound rating. That is a creator’s description of a separate test, not a Tesla statement or an independent engineering finding. The description does not establish whether its loading method is comparable to ordinary towing or to WhistlinDiesel’s recovery attempt, so the claim alone does not prove a failure below Tesla’s rating. Is Tesla’s cantrail recall related to the hitch failure?
No. Tesla’s recall information concerns possible separation of a stainless-steel cantrail panel at an adhesive joint on specified 2024 and 2025 Cybertrucks manufactured from November 13, 2023, through February 27, 2025. Tesla says the remedy is replacement of the cantrail assembly at no charge. That is a different part and failure mode from the tow receiver and rear-structure incident; the recall does not confirm or explain the hitch break. Owners can check their VIN with Tesla or NHTSA.
