Which Toyota Is Most Reliable? What 2026 Reliability Ratings Show

Toyota’s reliability evidence points to several recognized models, not one proven winner. Compare the 2026 findings by model year, study method and vehicle class.

There is no evidence-backed, definitive ranking of every Toyota model by reliability. The strongest available comparisons point to the Corolla, Camry, Tacoma, Sienna and 4Runner as J.D. Power’s 2026 Vehicle Dependability Study award recipients, while Consumer Reports’ 2026 reporting offers model-year-specific signals for the Tundra, 4Runner, Camry and Land Cruiser. Those findings use different methods and do not establish a single winner across Toyota’s lineup.

What the available rankings say about Toyota reliability

J.D. Power’s 2026 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study names the Toyota Corolla, Camry, Tacoma, Sienna and 4Runner among its model-level award recipients. The release does not publish a complete Toyota model-score table or rank these recipients against one another, so it does not support putting them in first-through-fifth order. Lexus IS, UX and GX also appear on the recipient list, but they are Lexus models, not Toyota models.

Consumer Reports’ 2026 reliability reporting says Toyota moved to the top of its brand reliability ranking. That is a brand-level result, not proof that every Toyota is equally reliable. Its model observations also vary by year and redesign: the 2026 Tundra reached average predicted reliability; the redesigned 4Runner improved from below average in the previous survey to above average; and the 2025 Camry fell to average after its redesign. Consumer Reports also reports good reliability for the new Land Cruiser and redesigned 4Runner.

These findings are useful for shortlisting, not guarantees. A model-level rating cannot predict whether a particular vehicle has been maintained well, has unrepaired damage, or will avoid future problems.

How to interpret the two kinds of evidence

Source and measure What it covers What it can tell a shopper
J.D. Power 2026 Vehicle Dependability Study Owner-reported problems after three years of ownership for 2023 model-year vehicles; the study names Toyota award recipients but the cited release gives no full Toyota score table. Which models received recognition in this study; it does not establish a complete Toyota ranking or a forecast for every model year.
Consumer Reports 2026 reliability reporting Predicted reliability judgments for new cars, including observations tied to specific model years and redesigns. Signals about expected reliability for covered new models; it is not a guarantee or a used-car condition assessment.

J.D. Power’s 2026 study drew responses from 33,268 original owners of 2023 vehicles, with fieldwork from December 2024 through November 2025. It evaluates 184 problem areas in nine categories: climate, driving assistance, driving experience, exterior, features/controls/displays, infotainment, interior, powertrain and seats. The industry average was 204 problems per 100 vehicles (PP100), two PP100 higher than the 2025 result; lower PP100 means fewer reported problems. That industry figure is context, not a Toyota-specific score.

Do not compare J.D. Power’s PP100 directly with Consumer Reports’ predicted reliability judgments as if they were the same scale. One summarizes owner-reported problems in vehicles after three years; the other predicts reliability for new cars from survey-based model coverage.

J.D. Power director of auto benchmarking Jason Norton said, “As owners hold onto their vehicles longer, the long-term ownership experience matters more than ever,” introducing the study’s focus on ownership beyond the initial purchase period. The release discusses infotainment, software updates and exterior issues among the factors contributing to dependability problems.

Which Toyota should you compare?

Start with vehicles in the same class and serving the same purpose. An award for a minivan does not make it directly comparable with a pickup, and a brand ranking cannot settle which individual model is the best fit. Use the ratings as one input, then check the exact model year—especially if it was redesigned.

  • Cars: Corolla and Camry are named J.D. Power 2026 award recipients. The specific Consumer Reports signal for the 2025 Camry is average predicted reliability after its redesign.
  • SUVs: The 4Runner is a J.D. Power award recipient, and Consumer Reports reports above-average predicted reliability for the redesigned model. Consumer Reports also reports good reliability for the new Land Cruiser.
  • Pickup trucks: Tacoma is a J.D. Power award recipient. Consumer Reports says the 2026 Tundra reached average predicted reliability.
  • Minivans: Sienna is a J.D. Power award recipient. The cited findings do not provide a Consumer Reports model-specific rating for it.

These are evidence-based comparison points, not an overall order. The available study release does not provide comparable scores for all Toyota models, and a rating for one model year should not be carried over to earlier or later years.

How to assess a used Toyota before buying

Consumer Reports’ Toyota model page says its ratings are based on new cars and do not include used-car reliability or maintenance and repair costs. For a used vehicle, investigate the exact car rather than relying on its nameplate’s reputation.

  1. Check the vehicle’s VIN or license plate in the NHTSA recall lookup for unrepaired safety recalls.
  2. Review service records and ask about maintenance, repairs, and any accident or damage history.
  3. Arrange an independent inspection so a qualified mechanic can assess the vehicle’s present condition.

NHTSA’s lookup does not show recalls already repaired, some recently announced recalls before affected VINs are identified, most recalls more than 15 years old, or non-safety campaigns. NHTSA also offers the free SaferCar app for recall alerts. A clear lookup result is not a substitute for service records or an inspection.

The scale of recall activity is another reason to check the individual vehicle: NHTSA reported 997 recalls for vehicles and equipment and more than 29 million vehicles recalled in 2025. Those are U.S.-wide totals, not Toyota-specific figures. Recall status is separate from reliability ratings, and a recall search alone cannot establish whether a car is mechanically sound.
