There is no well-supported, universal list of Toyota 4Runner model years to avoid. Published rankings disagree because they count different things and use different methods; none of the supplied evidence establishes a consistent, sales-adjusted failure-rate ranking across every generation. Treat year lists as leads, then judge the specific vehicle by its history, condition, inspection results, and VIN-specific recall status.
Why 4Runner “years to avoid” lists disagree
A model-year ranking is only as useful as its underlying measure. One comparison counts NHTSA complaints filed during each vehicle’s first three years and reports no 2010–2026 model year meeting its avoid threshold; it also says its counts are not adjusted for sales. ModelYears.com’s comparison is therefore a limited complaint-based screen, not a long-term reliability verdict.
Decide Before Buying’s guide uses a different composite that includes recall and complaint counts, EPA data, and brand-tier adjustments. Its results are not directly comparable to a fixed-window complaint count. Neither method, on the evidence available, provides a common sales- and exposure-adjusted failure rate across all generations.
NHTSA complaints are owner reports. They can help identify issues worth investigating, but they are not verified findings that every reported problem occurred as described, nor do raw totals show the proportion of vehicles affected. Complaint totals accumulate over differing periods and can vary with vehicle sales. A high count is a signal to investigate—not proof that an entire model year is unreliable.

What the frame-corrosion records say
Older 4Runners deserve an especially careful inspection of the frame and underbody. NHTSA reviewed a defect petition alleging frame corrosion in 2002–2006 4Runners and denied it after evaluation. That procedural decision is not a finding that every vehicle in those years has a defect, and it cannot establish that a particular vehicle’s frame is sound. NHTSA’s DP 18-002 record documents the review.
A separate 2022 federal analysis examined frame-corrosion complaint-age distributions for 1996–2002 and 2003–2009 4Runners alongside other vehicle groups. It states: “Only about 3 percent of the complaints for the third-generation 4Runner vehicles occurred within 10 years-in-service.” That figure is the share of complaints in the analysis reported within that time—not the share of vehicles that corroded. The Federal Register analysis offers context about complaint timing, not an individual vehicle’s odds of corrosion.
Rank #2
For a used 4Runner with exposure to road salt, moisture, or coastal conditions, have a qualified mechanic inspect the frame and underbody in person. Ask for an assessment of the severity and location of corrosion and whether there is evidence of structural compromise. A model-year label cannot replace that inspection.
How to check recalls on the 4Runner you are considering
Check the vehicle’s actual VIN using NHTSA’s recalls and investigations resources. A VIN lookup can show unrepaired recalls tied to that specific vehicle; a year, make, and model search returns general records. Recalls can cover narrow production ranges, so a campaign should not be assumed to apply to every 4Runner from that model year. Ask the seller or dealer for documentation that applicable recall repairs were completed.

For example, NHTSA recall 25V595 lists seven potentially involved 2025 Toyota 4Runners produced August 6–9, 2024, as part of a multi-model instrument-panel recall. It does not mean that all 2025 4Runners are included or that the model year is generally unreliable. The recall report identifies the limited production window; check the VIN to determine whether an individual vehicle is affected.

When you have specific vehicles in view, compare evidence about those vehicles rather than relying on a year list alone:
Rank #4
- Condition and maintenance: Review available service and ownership records, mileage, signs of neglected maintenance, and an independent inspection.
- Frame and underbody: Have corrosion assessed on the vehicle itself, including whether it appears to affect structural areas.
- Recall status: Look up each VIN and request proof of completed repairs for applicable campaigns.
- Damage history: Check for evidence of prior collision or flood damage. A history report can add context, but it does not establish mechanical condition or replace an inspection.
- Configuration and use: Consider trim, powertrain, drivetrain, modifications, towing or off-road use, and the conditions where the vehicle operated. The available evidence does not establish that one configuration is inherently more reliable.
- Ranking methodology: If using a year guide, check whether it counts raw complaints, uses a defined observation window, includes recalls, adjusts for sales or vehicle age, or combines several measures.
Test the systems and features relevant to the trim, and have an independent mechanic assess the vehicle before purchase. For an older 4Runner, include the frame and underbody in that inspection rather than treating a favorable reputation or a low complaint count as a substitute.
What a year ranking can—and cannot—decide
Use published year rankings to generate questions for a seller or mechanic, not to make the purchase decision by themselves. Complaint counts, recall totals, and composite scores answer different questions; they are not interchangeable reliability rates. The evidence available here does not justify naming a definitive set of 4Runner years every reliability-minded buyer should avoid.
