In 2025, a sports car was not automatically eligible for U.S. import just because it appeared on a “25-year” list or carried a particular model-year label. The federal age exemption turns on the individual vehicle’s date of manufacture. A specific car had to have reached 25 years old, and importers still had to complete the applicable federal paperwork and address state registration requirements.
That distinction matters for any list of “10 cars”: the available candidate lists are editorial starting points, not vehicle-specific legal determinations. The evidence available here does not establish ten sports-car models and qualifying production-date variants, so naming ten as legally importable would overstate what is known. Use the rule and checks below to assess a particular car rather than treating a model name as a blanket green light.
What the 25-year rule actually means
NHTSA says a motor vehicle at least 25 years old may be imported into the United States without regard to whether it complies with all applicable Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS). The age is measured from the vehicle’s manufacture date, not simply by subtracting a model year from the current year. See NHTSA’s Importation and Certification FAQs.
For a historical 2025 list, the relevant question is whether the particular vehicle had reached its 25th manufacture-date anniversary by the time it was imported in 2025. A car manufactured later in 2000, for example, did not reach 25 years old until the corresponding date in 2025. A model-year label alone does not establish when that individual car was built.

Why a list of ten model names can mislead
Secondary articles can help identify interesting candidates, but they do not replace checking a specific vehicle against the federal rule. Motor1 published a ten-vehicle import list on December 23, 2024; MotorTrend published a feature on JDM cars becoming importable in 2025 on March 25, 2025. These are editorial sources, not government eligibility determinations.
A model family may include cars built on different dates or in configurations that affect which import pathway applies. A list entry therefore cannot establish that every example of that model was eligible throughout 2025. Before relying on a candidate list, match the exact vehicle and its documented manufacture date to NHTSA’s guidance.

How to check an individual car
- Identify the exact vehicle. Confirm its identity and configuration from the vehicle and its records; do not rely on a model name or model-year shorthand.
- Establish the manufacture date. Check the permanent manufacturer label. If it does not show the date, NHTSA says records such as an invoice or registration document may help establish the vehicle’s age.
- Check whether it had reached 25 years old on the import date. Count from the manufacture date, not from the start or end of a model year.
- Confirm the applicable federal pathway. Review the current NHTSA importation guidance for the specific vehicle. A younger nonconforming vehicle generally needs a specific NHTSA eligibility determination; if eligible, it may need to be imported through, or under contract with, a registered importer for compliance work.
- Prepare the federal declarations. CBP says importers file the HS-7 Declaration. EPA provides Form 3520-1 for passenger-vehicle imports. Check the agencies’ current instructions and forms before shipping or entry: CBP vehicle import requirements and EPA vehicle and engine import forms.
- Check state requirements before purchase. Federal import eligibility does not by itself establish that a vehicle can be registered for road use in a particular state. Verify the state’s registration and emissions requirements for the exact car.
What the age exemption does not settle
The 25-year provision is an exemption from FMVSS compliance; it is not a statement that every other import requirement disappears. Federal declarations and applicable EPA requirements remain relevant, and registration rules are a separate practical check. CBP’s guidance on importing classic or antique vehicles for personal use discusses age evidence and notes that duty may apply. The applicable duty depends on circumstances; this evidence does not establish a current rate.

Use a “10 cars” article to discover candidates, not to clear a specific purchase. For any car you are considering, verify its manufacture date and records, apply the NHTSA rule to the individual vehicle and import date, complete the relevant federal declarations, and confirm state registration requirements. Without those vehicle-specific checks, calling an entire model legally importable in 2025 is too broad.
