Which Nissan Cars Came With a VQ V6? Used-Buyer’s Guide

Nissan fitted VQ V6 engines to multiple models, but market, year, and trim matter. Here are documented examples and how to verify one before buying.

Nissan used VQ V6 engines in several North American cars and crossovers—including the Altima, Maxima, 350Z, Murano, Quest, and Pathfinder—and in Japan-market models such as the Skyline, Stagea, Elgrand, Presage, and Bassara. The exact engine depends on the car’s market, model year, and trim, so a nameplate alone cannot confirm that a particular used car has a VQ.

Which North American Nissan models had a VQ V6?

Nissan’s 2003 annual report names six North American VQ35 applications: Altima, Maxima, 350Z, Murano, Quest, and Pathfinder. Nissan’s 2001–2002 Fact File also lists the VQ35DE for the Altima, Maxima, and Pathfinder. These are documented examples, not a guarantee that every year or trim of each model used a VQ engine.

Model Nissan-documented VQ example What to verify
Altima VQ35DE appears among available engines in Nissan’s 2001–2002 Fact File. The Altima also had non-VQ engine options; check the specific car’s year and trim. Nissan 2001–2002 Fact File
Maxima VQ35DE appears in Nissan’s 2001–2002 Fact File. Confirm the year, trim, and engine code on the vehicle. Nissan 2001–2002 Fact File
350Z The Z33 350Z used a 3.5-liter VQ35DE. Do not conflate it with the later 370Z and its 3.7-liter V6. Nissan Heritage Collection: 350Z
Murano Listed among VQ35 applications in Nissan’s 2003 annual report; a 2004 350XV Heritage Collection vehicle specifies VQ35DE. The Heritage vehicle confirms that example, not every Murano year or trim. Nissan 2003 annual report; Nissan Heritage Collection: 2004 Murano
Quest Included in Nissan’s 2003 VQ35 application list. Nissan’s 2001–2002 Fact File instead lists a VG33E for the Quest, illustrating why the model year matters. Nissan 2003 annual report; Nissan 2001–2002 Fact File
Pathfinder VQ35 appears in Nissan’s 2003 annual report, and VQ35DE appears in the 2001–2002 Fact File. Check the specific year, trim, and market. Nissan 2003 annual report; Nissan 2001–2002 Fact File

What VQ models were sold in Japan?

Nissan’s July 2002 Japan lineup documents more VQ variants and applications than the North American examples above. The lineup is a dated snapshot of that market, not a complete worldwide list.

Japan-market model VQ engine codes listed by Nissan Qualification
Cefiro VQ20DE, VQ25DD, VQ30DE, VQ30DD The available engine depended on version. Nissan Japan lineup / Fact File
Skyline VQ25DD, VQ30DD, VQ35DE Nissan’s historical table maps the V35 Skyline name to Infiniti G35 in North America, but that does not establish identical trims. Nissan Japan lineup / Fact File; Nissan market-name table
Stagea VQ25DD, VQ25DET, VQ30DD Historical Japan-market availability. Nissan Japan lineup / Fact File
Elgrand VQ35DE The 2002 lineup lists this engine for the E51. Nissan Japan lineup / Fact File
Presage and Bassara VQ30DE These models also had non-VQ engine choices. Nissan Japan lineup / Fact File

Nissan’s Heritage Collection records also document specific Skyline 350GT examples with the VQ35DE. Engine codes and market badges matter: for instance, Nissan’s historical table associates A33 with Cefiro, Infiniti I35, or Maxima depending on market, and V35 with Skyline or Infiniti G35. A shared chassis code or related name is not proof that every market’s configuration is the same. Nissan historical market table; Nissan Heritage Collection: Skyline 350GT

Is a 350Z engine the same as a 370Z engine?

No. The Z33-generation 350Z is documented with the 3.5-liter VQ35DE. Nissan dates its production run from July 2002 to December 2008; the successor Z34 is the 370Z, which Nissan describes as having a 3.7-liter V6. The “350Z” and “370Z” names therefore point to different generations and engine displacements. Nissan Heritage Collection: 350Z; Nissan Z history

How to confirm a VQ engine in a used Nissan

  1. Establish the market and model year. Use the registration and VIN documentation to identify where the car was originally sold and its model year. A familiar nameplate can refer to different regional configurations.
  2. Find the engine code. Check the vehicle identification label or manufacturer build records for the exact code, such as VQ35DE. “V6” or “3.5” alone is not enough to identify the engine family or version.
  3. Match the code to the exact year, trim, and market. Nissan’s records show multiple engine choices within a nameplate and changes over time; the Quest’s different documented engines across the early-2000s examples are one clear illustration.
  4. Verify the vehicle, not just the listing. Treat a seller’s description or online listing as a lead, then compare it with the car’s label and build information.

What to compare when choosing between VQ-equipped cars

  • Exact engine code and displacement: “VQ” covers multiple versions; it is not a complete engine specification.
  • Market and chassis code: regional names can differ, and similarly named cars need not share the same configuration.
  • Model year and trim: availability can change within a nameplate.
  • Vehicle documentation: give more weight to VIN/build records and the engine code on the car than to a badge or listing text.

Nissan’s cited records establish historical fitment examples. They do not establish current used-car prices, reliability rankings, or compatibility of particular repair parts, so those questions require evidence specific to the vehicle and component.
