The 428 Cobra Jet arrived in 1968 as an enthusiast option, not a standalone Ford model. Ford specifically documents it in the 1969 Mustang Mach 1, but the available Ford sources do not establish a complete year-by-year list of every Ford or Mercury application. The examples below distinguish what Ford confirms from what its historical account only suggests.
What Ford confirms about the 428 Cobra Jet
It debuted in 1968
Ford’s 50 Years of Ford Mustang Milestones says the 428 Cobra Jet was introduced on April 1, 1968, as part of an option package aimed at enthusiasts. That makes 1968 the engine’s introduction year; it does not, by itself, identify every model offered with it.
The documented production example: 1969 Mustang Mach 1
Ford’s official Mustang history identifies the 428 Cobra Jet as an optional engine for the 1969 Mustang Mach 1 and gives its rating as 335 horsepower. That is Ford’s stated rating for this application, not an independently measured output figure.
What Ford’s Fairlane reference does—and does not—show
Ford’s 2026 account, From Dearborn to the Drag Strip, traces the Cobra Jet story to Bob Tasca Sr., who assembled a 428 package from Ford components at his Rhode Island dealership and urged Dearborn to build it. Ford says it responded with the 1968 Cobra Jet Mustang, which made its drag-racing debut.

The same account says, “The cars changed from Fairlanes to Mustangs.” This is historical context for the program’s evolution, not a year- and trim-specific statement that proves a production Fairlane was offered with the 428 Cobra Jet. Without matching model-year option documentation, a Fairlane should not be added to a confirmed application list on that wording alone.
Why an exhaustive model list needs more evidence
Ford’s published history supports the 1969 Mustang Mach 1 example and the 1968 Mustang’s role in the engine’s launch. It does not settle every Ford and Mercury model, trim, and model year that may have offered the engine. A complete list requires original year-specific brochures, option lists, or service literature; platform similarities, engine-bay fit, and retrospective references are not sufficient proof of a factory option.

When checking a claimed application, verify the model year and exact body or trim, whether the engine was a factory option, and whether the reference means a 428 Cobra Jet rather than another 428, a Super Cobra Jet, or the later 429 Cobra Jet. Ford Performance’s Ford Racing Engine History treats the 429 Cobra Jet separately; it is not interchangeable with the 428 Cobra Jet in an application list.

Ford’s 2026 retrospective reports that Joniec ran 11.49 seconds at more than 120 mph in the all-Cobra Jet Super Stock final at the 1968 Winternationals. That is Ford’s account of a race result, not a specification or test result for every production Cobra Jet car.

Similarly, Ford’s 2013 Mustang timeline says the 1969 Mustang range had 11 powertrain combinations overall. The figure describes the whole range, not 11 Cobra Jet variants.
