The largest engine among modern European supercars and hypercars with published specifications is the 8.3-liter naturally aspirated V16 in the Bugatti Tourbillon. That is the displacement figure Bugatti has announced for the car, and it is larger than the 6.5-liter V12s used in the Ferrari 812 Superfast and Lamborghini Aventador S. The Tourbillon is still a announced model, not a delivered one: Bugatti’s most recent update in this review, dated October 8, 2026, described development testing and said type approval had not yet been granted.
Which engine is largest by displacement
Displacement is the total swept volume of all cylinders, and it is the only measure that makes “largest engine” a precise comparison. Among the European supercar and hypercar models covered by manufacturer material, the ranking is straightforward:

The Type 41 Royale has the largest displacement of any European road car in this list, but Bugatti itself frames it as a historic luxury roadster built in the 1930s. Counting it would change the category rather than answer the supercar question.
Current status of the Tourbillon
The Tourbillon’s status has moved over the course of 2026, and the two Bugatti updates carry different weight. A January 2026 year-in-review said development was continuing and that production would begin in 2026. The later update, dated October 8, 2026, describes the car as still in development testing and states that type approval has not yet been granted. For the most recent position, the October update is the one to follow.

Accurate wording for publication is: “Bugatti’s announced Tourbillon uses an 8.3-liter V16 and is the largest-displacement engine among the European supercars compared here. As of October 8, 2026, the car remained in development and had not received type approval.” Avoid language that describes customer deliveries or road-going examples in use, because the sources reviewed do not establish either.

What “largest” does and does not measure
Displacement says nothing about physical size, output, or the character of the car. The Tourbillon’s 8.3-liter V16 is not the same thing as the largest physical engine, and displacement comparisons do not rank power or torque. The Tourbillon’s 1,800 hp figure is a combined system output that includes three electric motors, so it cannot be compared directly with the combustion-only output of the V12 cars.
Bugatti’s own description of the engine’s size is about physical dimensions rather than displacement. Bugatti Rimac Chief Technical Officer Emilio Scervo said: “The naturally aspirated V16 is one of the largest engines ever created, measuring nearly a meter in length.” That is a statement about length, and it should be quoted that way. How to phrase the answer
- Lead with the model and the figure: “The Bugatti Tourbillon, with an 8.3-liter V16.”
- Specify that “largest” means displacement.
- Mark the Tourbillon as announced and in development, with the October 8, 2026 date.
- If the reader includes historic European cars, name the Type 41 Royale separately rather than folding it into the supercar ranking.
The figures above are manufacturer specifications for each model, not independent measurements. Displacement is fixed for each named engine, while the Tourbillon’s approval and delivery status should be checked again before any update is published.
Bugatti’s 8.0-liter W16 remains the most recent production Bugatti engine in this comparison, and the Ferrari and Lamborghini V12s are the strongest Italian points of reference. Those three choices cover most readers who ask this question.

These figures are specification data, and a larger displacement does not make a car faster, more efficient or more usable. For a supercar comparison, power, weight, gearbox and availability are the more useful next questions.
