The boat ran 215 mph at the 2026 Lake of the Ozarks Shootout and won Top Gun. That is the event result behind the “record-breaking” description—not evidence here of a certified world speed record.
What engines power American Ethanol?
The current setup described by ProCharger in 2026 is four supercharged V-8 engines, with one ProCharger F-4R-136 centrifugal supercharger on each engine. ProCharger lists approximately 2,500 hp per engine and more than 10,000 hp combined; those figures are the manufacturer’s published claims, not an independently specified engine rating. ProCharger’s 2026 account identifies the hardware and output.
The reviewed current accounts do not name the V-8 block manufacturer or model. It would therefore be unsupported to identify the present engines as a particular Chevrolet or Mercury Racing model.
Who owns the boat, and what happened at the Shootout?
Don Onken owns American Ethanol. At the 2026 Lake of the Ozarks Shootout, Tony Battiato drove and John Cosker served as throttleman. Their pass was 215 mph and earned Top Gun. ProCharger called it the fastest pass of that weekend and counted it as the team’s 11th Top Gun title; these are event-specific results, not proof of a certified world record. How does the current setup differ from the older engines?
American Ethanol has had a substantially different engine arrangement in the past. A 2015 feature described four 582-cubic-inch big-block Chevrolet engines coupled in pairs to form two V-16 powerplants, with a reported total of 7,700 hp at that time. That is a historical configuration, not the four-supercharged-V-8 setup reported in 2026. Poker Runs America’s 2015 feature covers the earlier design.

What is reported about its fuel?
Fuel descriptions are date-specific, not a single established permanent specification. In an August 2026 pre-event report, Speed on the Water described the boat as running 98-percent ethanol fuel and sending power through two drives. That report also called the engines quad 2,500-hp units. A 2020 owner-authored article described an 85-percent ethanol blend; that earlier statement should not be substituted for the 2026 account. The 2020 article is the source for the older blend description.
