Start considering your diesel truck’s block heater at around 0°F (-18°C), but treat that as a rule of thumb—not a universal requirement. The right temperature depends on the truck’s model year, engine and owner’s manual: for example, Ford says its 2026 Super Duty heater is most effective below 0°F, while the 2022 Ram 2500/3500 manual recommends using it below 0°F and requires it below -20°F.
What temperature calls for a block heater?
Use about 0°F (-18°C) as a prompt to check your manual and consider plugging in an equipped truck. It does not mean every diesel truck needs a heater at that temperature. Manufacturer instructions vary by vehicle and year, so follow the owner’s manual or diesel supplement for your exact truck.

How long should you leave it plugged in?
Use the connection time specified for your vehicle rather than averaging different manufacturers’ figures or assuming an overnight connection is necessary.

What a block heater does—and what it cannot replace
A block heater warms engine coolant to make cold starting easier. Ram describes the cited Cummins heater as a resistance heater installed in the engine water jacket. It is separate from other cold-weather equipment: Ram’s diesel supplement describes a 12-volt fuel-filter heater that helps prevent fuel gelling and an intake-air heater that assists starting. A block heater should not be treated as a substitute for those systems.

Starting in severe cold also depends on following the prescribed starting procedure and keeping the truck properly maintained. Ford’s 2012 6.7L diesel supplement advises using the correct cold-weather oil, keeping the batteries adequately charged, and waiting for the glow-plug preheat indicator to go out. The block heater is one part of cold-weather preparation, not a cure for a weak battery, unsuitable oil, or fuel that is not winterized for conditions.

Electrical and parking instructions vary by truck. Ford’s 2026 Super Duty manual specifies a grounded 120-volt AC source and cautions against ungrounded systems and two-prong adapters. It calls for a UL- or CSA-certified 16-gauge outdoor extension cord suitable for cold temperatures and marked for outdoor appliances; use the shortest cord possible, do not connect cords in a chain, and keep plug connections dry. Ford also says to check the hookup for heat after about 30 minutes, park clear of combustibles, and unplug and stow the system before driving. The Chevrolet 2021 2.8L Duramax supplement says not to plug in the heater while the vehicle is in a garage or under a carport; it directs drivers to park in a clear, open area away from buildings or structures. That warning is specific to the cited manual. Check your own truck’s parking instructions instead of assuming another model’s setup applies.

A practical decision
- Find the owner’s manual or diesel supplement for your truck’s exact model year and engine.
- Follow its temperature threshold and plug-in duration. If you need a broad prompt before checking, consider using an equipped heater around 0°F (-18°C).
- Use the outlet, cord and parking setup specified for your vehicle; confirm the cord is suitable for outdoor cold-weather use where required.
- Before driving, unplug and stow the heater cord as instructed, then follow the truck’s normal cold-start procedure.
