The 2025 J.D. Power U.S. Initial Quality Study lists Tesla at 200 problems per 100 vehicles (PP100) and Rivian at 274 PP100. Both are marked “not rank eligible,” and the figures are whole-brand scores—not an electric-vehicle-only comparison. The table therefore does not establish a definitive EV brand winner.
What the 2025 IQS table says about electric-car brands
Among the EV-focused brands shown in J.D. Power’s 2025 brand table, Tesla has the lower score. That is a limited, brand-level comparison: the scores are not restricted to electric models, and neither Tesla nor Rivian is rank eligible. The full table’s lowest displayed score is Lexus at 166 PP100, but that is also a whole-brand result, not an EV-only finding. J.D. Power’s 2025 U.S. Initial Quality Study describes a lower score as reflecting higher vehicle quality.

The figures are from the 2025 study and should not be read as a ranking of electric models or as a count of defects found in cars during manufacture.
What “problems per 100 vehicles” means
J.D. Power’s Initial Quality Study (IQS) tracks owner-reported problems during the first 90 days of ownership and combines customer feedback with verified repair-order data. The 2025 study surveyed 92,694 purchasers and lessees of new 2025-model-year vehicles after that 90-day period. J.D. Power describes IQS as “tracking owner-reported problems within the first 90 days of ownership” on its IQS methodology page.

PP100 is a study measure of reported problems per 100 vehicles. It is not a factory defect rate or a tally of defective cars: one vehicle can generate more than one reported problem. A score of 200 PP100 does not mean that 200 out of every 100 cars built were defective. It means the study recorded an average of 200 reported problems per 100 vehicles under its methodology.
Why this is not a definitive EV reliability ranking
The IQS table reports brand-level results across vehicle types. It does not separate each brand’s battery-electric models from its other vehicles, so Tesla’s and Rivian’s figures cannot answer which EV-only lineup has the fewest early problems. Their “not rank eligible” labels are another reason not to present the table as a formal winner-and-runner-up ranking.

The numbers are useful as early-ownership context, but they do not identify what caused a brand’s score or establish how a specific model will perform. For a purchase decision, a brand-level figure should not substitute for model- and year-specific information.

J.D. Power’s Electric Vehicle Experience (EVX) Ownership Study addresses owner satisfaction, not the IQS problem count. Its index should not be compared numerically with PP100 or treated as another defect ranking. The 2025 U.S. EV Experience Ownership Study is a separate measure.

Longer-term dependability is a different question again. J.D. Power’s 2026 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study examines problems after three years of ownership. Its findings should not be blended with the IQS’s first-90-days results.
