The Dodge Viper sports car (built 1991 to 2017) is the best-documented, and its output rose from about 415 hp in the mid-1990s to 645 hp by 2016 and 2017. The Ram SRT-10 pickup used an 8.3-liter version of the Viper’s V10. Certain Ram 2500 and 3500 heavy-duty pickups used a different engine, an 8.0-liter Magnum V10, and a published rating for that engine is not established in the sources available for this article.
The three Dodge V10 applications
- Dodge Viper (1991 to 2017). A V10 sports car with an all-aluminum engine. Dodge’s own brand page says the “Viper and Viper SRT® ruled the streets from 1991 to 2017.” The Viper is out of production.
- Dodge Ram SRT-10. A high-performance Ram pickup built around an 8.3-liter engine derived from the Viper’s V10. It is not the same as the heavy-duty Ram engine described below.
- Ram 2500 and 3500 heavy-duty pickups. These trucks used an 8.0-liter Magnum V10. It is a separate engine family from the Viper’s aluminum V10, even though both are listed at 8.0 liters in some years.
Because these three applications use different engines, a single “Dodge V10 horsepower” figure does not describe them all. Each answer below is tied to a vehicle, a model year, and a source.
Dodge Viper: how the output changed
The Viper’s rating changed substantially over its life, mostly through displacement and engine updates. The table lists the year-specific figures available for this article. It does not claim that every model year between two listed years had the same rating.
| Model year or source | Displacement | Power | Torque | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1995 | 8.0 L | 450 bhp at 5,200 rpm | 490 lb-ft at 3,700 rpm | Dodge Viper service specifications (1995) |
| 1996 RT/10 | 8.0 L | 415 hp | 488 lb-ft (rpm not stated) | Dodge catalog (1996) |
| 2001 RT/10 | 8.0 L | 450 bhp at 5,200 rpm | 490 lb-ft at 3,700 rpm | Dodge Viper service specifications (2001) |
| 2008 generation | 8.4 L | 600 hp | 560 lb-ft (rpm not stated) | Owners’ association history, a specialist historical source |
| 2013 | 8.4 L | 640 hp | 600 lb-ft (rpm not stated) | Dodge “100 Years of Dodge” historical booklet |
| 2016 | 8.4 L | 645 hp | 600 lb-ft (rpm not stated) | FCA Canada press kit |
| 2017 | 8.4 L | 645 hp | 600 lb-ft (rpm not stated) | Dodge brochure |
The 1990s ratings
The 1995 and 2001 service specifications both list 450 brake horsepower at 5,200 rpm and 490 lb-ft at 3,700 rpm, while the 1996 RT/10 catalog lists 415 hp and 488 lb-ft. The sources do not explain the gap. Quote the year and the source with whichever figure you use, and do not average them.

The original Viper is also often described as 400 hp. This article does not list that figure because no primary document was available to confirm it.
The 8.4-liter Viper (2008 to 2017)
The move to 8.4 liters brought the largest step in the table, from 600 hp in the 2008 generation to 640 hp in 2013 and 645 hp in 2016 and 2017. Torque reached 600 lb-ft by 2013. The 2013 booklet describes the street-legal car this way:
Rank #2
- Hot Wheels 2013 SRT Viper (JBB15) - Then and Now Series 6/10, Short Card Edition
- 1:64 Scale Dodge Viper

“The street-legal version of the 2013 Viper had an all-aluminum, 8.4-liter V10 engine that makes 640 horsepower and 600 pound-feet of torque — the most torque of any naturally aspirated sports car engine in the world.”
The booklet does not name an individual speaker. The “most torque” claim is Dodge’s own statement and is not independently verified here.

Ram SRT-10: the 8.3-liter Viper-derived V10
The SRT-10 pickup used an 8.3-liter V10 based on the Viper engine. Two sources give different numbers:
| Figure | Power | Torque | Source and limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Commonly cited SRT-10 rating | 500 hp | 525 lb-ft | Specialist reference material; model year and rpm not stated |
| Alternate 8.3-liter V10 rating | 510 hp | 535 lb-ft | Dodge catalog; the model year and trim are not identified in the excerpt available for this article |
Use the 500 hp and 525 lb-ft figure for a generic SRT-10 reference, and the 510 hp and 535 lb-ft figure only if you can confirm the catalog covers the same truck.

Ram 2500 and 3500: the 8.0-liter Magnum V10
The heavy-duty Ram V10 is the least documented of the three applications. What this article can say:
- The engine is an 8.0-liter Magnum V10, not a Viper engine. Matching displacement does not mean matching output or design.
- One informal figure of 300 hp and 440 lb-ft circulates in owner discussion. No factory source confirmed it, so it should not be quoted as a rating.
- No year-by-year factory output table for this engine was located. For a rating in a specific model year, check the Dodge or Ram factory specifications for that year.
How to cite a Dodge V10 horsepower figure
A V10 figure is only useful when it carries the details that separate the three applications:

Ownership references for Viper engines
Dodge’s current brand page states that the Viper is out of production and directs owners to resources for used vehicles, manuals, and parts. Listings and parts availability change, so check current sources before buying. Year-specific Viper service manuals, such as the 1995 and 2001 specifications cited above, are the most useful reference when you need the exact figures for one model year.
