Porsche Engineering’s documented work with Harley-Davidson was development support for the Revolution Engine, a new V2 powerplant introduced for the V-Rod. The official records from both companies describe that engineering role. They do not describe a one-off motorcycle built through the partnership, so the “unlikely one-off” framing does not match the evidence.
What the official records say
Porsche and Harley-Davidson each describe the same project from their own side, and the accounts line up on the essentials. Porsche Engineering was a development partner. The engine it helped develop went into the V-Rod. Harley-Davidson’s engine history states the engine was developed with Porsche’s help:
“Developed with the assistance of Porsche, the Revolution V-Twin’s twin cylinders were splayed at a 60-degree angle and topped with dual overhead camshafts and four-valve heads.” (Harley-Davidson USA, History of Harley-Davidson Engine Types, undated)
Porsche Engineering’s company history uses similar language, describing the Revolution Engine as a project in which the company, as development partner, created a new V2 engine for the V-Rod (Porsche Engineering, “About us: Innovation, expertise, and global solutions,” undated).
#1 Best Overall
- OEM Replacement: Compatible with 2002-2003 Harley Davidson V-Rod VRSC models. Directly replaces OEM part number 40027-01 for perfect fit and performance
- High Strength Construction: Made from premium-quality reinforced materials that provide excellent tensile strength and long-lasting durability

- Reliable Performance: Each belt undergoes strict quality inspection to meet OEM standards, offering dependable performance and wear resistance under demanding riding conditions
Together, these describe Porsche as an engineering contributor to a Harley-Davidson production engine. Neither company’s history describes a separate special-build motorcycle resulting from the partnership.

| Source | Date given | What it says |
|---|---|---|
| Porsche USA, “80 years of Porsche designs” | 2011 release | Porsche engineering began work on the project in 2001; the engine is described as based on a racing engine |
| Porsche Engineering, company history | Undated | Associates the Revolution Engine project with 2002 and gives 1,131 cc for the water-cooled engine |
| Porsche Newsroom, “Innovative by tradition: 90 years of engineering services by Porsche” | 2021 | Dates the V-Rod engine project to 2002 |
| Harley-Davidson, engine history | Undated | Gives 69 cubic inches (1,131 cc) and says the engine was introduced for the VRSCA V-Rod |
The most precise phrasing is that work began in 2001, with Porsche’s later histories placing the Revolution Engine project in 2002. A 2003 Porsche Engineering technical account, titled “Cruiser developed with Porsche Engineering,” is a period source for the project (PDF, 2003).
Why the “one-off” label does not fit
The V-Rod was a production model. Harley-Davidson’s H.O.G. archive records its unveiling in 2001 and calls it the company’s first all-new motorcycle since the K model in 1952 (H.O.G. Magazine Canada, Winter 2011). The Revolution Engine was introduced as part of that model, which is the opposite of a single unit built for one purpose.

If “one-off” refers to a prototype, show bike or specific custom build, the official sources reviewed do not document one. Readers who have seen that claim elsewhere should treat it as unverified.
The Revolution Engine
Core specifications
- Layout: V2 with cylinders splayed at 60 degrees, per Harley-Davidson’s engine history.
- Displacement: 1,131 cc (69 cubic inches), stated by Harley-Davidson and by Porsche Engineering. Neither page gives a publication year for the figure.
- Cooling: water-cooled, per Porsche Engineering’s history.
- Valvetrain: dual overhead camshafts and four valves per cylinder head, per Harley-Davidson.
- Design origin: Porsche says the engine was based on a racing engine. The sources give no further detail on that basis.
How Harley-Davidson characterizes it
Harley-Davidson’s engine history describes the Revolution as a radical departure from the company’s previous engine design. That description is qualitative. The source does not give the earlier engine’s specifications, so this article does not offer a layout or performance ranking against it.

What the sources do not establish
- How engineering tasks were divided between Porsche and Harley-Davidson beyond Porsche’s own account.
- Any road-test, performance or output comparison for the Revolution Engine.
- A named engineer quote. None could be verified from official sources.
- Whether the racing-engine basis refers to a specific racing unit.
For the collaboration itself, the record supports a clear and modest conclusion: Porsche Engineering helped develop a production engine for Harley-Davidson’s V-Rod, and the sources do not show anything beyond that.
