Apple Wallet car keys are supported by a growing but still limited set of vehicles. Compatibility depends on more than the badge on the hood: model year, trim, country, factory hardware, automaker software and connected-services subscriptions can all matter.
The list below reflects confirmed support as of August 9, 2026. Treat it as a model guide, not a guarantee for every vehicle with that name. Before buying or attempting setup, have the dealer check the exact VIN and confirm that the car supports Apple Wallet car key, not merely an automaker-branded “Digital Key” feature.
Cars that support Apple Wallet car keys
These are the confirmed makes and models. Where the manufacturer limits support to particular trims, production dates or generations, those conditions are included.

Do not use Genesis Digital Key 1 as evidence that an iPhone key will work. Genesis describes Digital Key 1 as Android-only; Apple Wallet support is associated with specific Digital Key 2 implementations.
MINI production-date restrictions
For MINI, the relevant production dates are more useful than a simple model-year label:
- Aceman: production from May 2024.
- Cooper three-door C/S: production from March 2024.
- Cooper three-door E/SE: production from November 2023.
- Cooper five-door: production from July 2024.
- Countryman: production from November 2023.
- John Cooper Works Countryman: production from November 2023.
Rivian requirements
Apple Wallet Digital Key is available on second-generation R1T and R1S vehicles after the required software rollout. Rivian specifies vehicle software 2025.46 or later and Rivian mobile-app version 3.8.0 or later. First-generation R1 vehicles do not receive this native Apple Wallet key through the same rollout.
Toyota RAV4 requirements
The 2026 RAV4 is Toyota’s documented starting point for this rollout. Digital Key can use a compatible device’s native wallet, including Apple Wallet, for locking, unlocking, starting and operating the vehicle. Toyota’s feature-availability information says it is not available on LE and SE and is standard on XLE and Woodland. An active Remote Connect trial or subscription is also required.

What an Apple Wallet car key can do
Capabilities vary by vehicle. Depending on the manufacturer and hardware, the Wallet key may provide:
- Locking and unlocking by tapping the phone or watch on an NFC reader.
- Starting the car.
- Passive entry when you approach the vehicle.
- Walk-away locking.
- Remote lock and unlock.
- Trunk, climate or other manufacturer-specific controls.
- Sharing the key with another person through Messages, Mail, AirDrop or a supported app.
These are not guaranteed features of every compatible car. One model may require an NFC tap at the door and key reader, while another may support hands-free entry using ultra-wideband (UWB). Wallet shows only the controls supplied by the automaker.
iPhone and Apple Watch requirements
For basic Apple Wallet car-key support, Apple requires:
- iPhone XS or later, or iPhone SE (second generation), running the latest available iOS.
- Apple Watch Series 5 or later, or Apple Watch SE, running the latest available watchOS.
- An Apple Account signed in on the device.
- An eligible vehicle associated with the owner’s automaker account.
Advanced functions have stricter requirements. Passive entry requires iPhone 11 or later, excluding the second- and third-generation iPhone SE and iPhone 16e, or Apple Watch Series 6 or later. Remote entry requires iPhone 11 or later or Apple Watch Series 6 or later and must be within Bluetooth range of the vehicle.

How to add a car key to Apple Wallet
There is no universal “Add car key” button that discovers compatible cars. The automaker starts the provisioning process.
- Open the manufacturer’s app, or follow the setup link in its email, text message or vehicle-display instructions.
- Start the digital-key setup and complete any account or vehicle verification.
- When Apple Wallet opens, tap Continue.
- If requested, place the top center of the iPhone on the car’s key reader during pairing or startup.
- Complete the on-screen instructions. The key may be added automatically to the paired Apple Watch.
To add an already provisioned key to an Apple Watch manually, open the Watch app on the paired iPhone, tap Wallet & Apple Pay, then tap the Add button beside the car key.
Express Mode and a dead iPhone
Express Mode turns on automatically when a car key is added. It lets the key work without opening Wallet, unlocking the iPhone or authenticating with Face ID, Touch ID or a passcode. To change it, open the key in Wallet, tap the More button and adjust the Express Mode setting.
Some keys continue working in iPhone power reserve for up to five hours after the phone needs charging. This is not guaranteed for every vehicle or key setup, and turning the iPhone off disables the feature.

Why a compatible-looking car may not work
The most common mistake is treating related features as interchangeable. A car can have Apple CarPlay, an automaker app-based key or Android Digital Key without supporting Apple Wallet car keys.

| The iPhone key works but the Apple Watch key does not | The key was not transferred automatically, or the watch is not eligible. Use Watch > Wallet & Apple Pay on the paired iPhone. |
| A lost iPhone appears to disable only one key | Marking the owner’s iPhone as lost disables its car key, but shared keys are not automatically revoked. Revoke them separately in Wallet or through the automaker. |
Before concluding that a listed model is incompatible, update iOS, watchOS, the automaker app and vehicle software; confirm Bluetooth and NFC are enabled; check the automaker account; and ask the dealer to verify the VIN, trim, market and installed Digital Key hardware.

Does Apple CarPlay mean a car supports Apple Wallet car keys?
No. CarPlay and Wallet car keys are separate features. A vehicle can support CarPlay without supporting an Apple Wallet key.
Can every BMW with BMW Digital Key use Apple Wallet?
No. BMW Digital Key support does not automatically equal Apple Wallet support. The vehicle needs the appropriate Digital Key hardware and regional compatibility.

How do I verify a used car’s Apple Wallet compatibility?
Ask the manufacturer or dealer to check the exact VIN, model year, trim, market, factory Digital Key hardware, vehicle software and any connected-services subscription requirement. Do not rely only on the model name or an online listing.
