Tesla’s European sales did not collapse because people suddenly stopped wanting electric cars. In January and February 2025, the company lost ground while the broader battery-electric market was growing or holding up in several major countries.
The figures pointed to a combination of an awkward Model Y changeover, a thin ageing range, tougher competition and a brand increasingly tied to Elon Musk’s political activity. “Toxic” is a description of Tesla’s damaged public image, not an official sales category—but the backlash was measurable.
What the sales figures actually showed
Across the EU, the UK and EFTA, Tesla registrations fell 45.2% year on year in January 2025, according to ACEA data reported by Reuters. Over the same period, battery-electric registrations in the region increased by 37.3%. That contrast matters: this was not simply a Europe-wide rejection of EVs.

February produced another severe result. Tesla registrations across 25 European markets plus the UK, Norway and Switzerland fell 44% to fewer than 16,000 vehicles. Volkswagen and BMW Group each sold more battery-electric vehicles than Tesla in Europe that month. Chinese-owned brands also moved ahead.

These are registration figures, not a perfect measure of customer orders. Registrations can be affected by inventory, shipping schedules, fleet deliveries and the timing of model updates. Even so, the scale and geographical spread of the decline made it difficult to dismiss as a statistical quirk.
The Model Y changeover created a real sales problem
Tesla was moving from the outgoing Model Y to the redesigned version in early 2025. A factory changeover can temporarily reduce production, shipments and the number of cars available for immediate delivery. Buyers who knew a facelifted Model Y was arriving had an obvious reason to wait, while buyers who wanted the old version faced reduced choice.
That timing hit Tesla particularly hard because the Model Y is one of its two volume products. Unlike a large manufacturer with dozens of EVs, Tesla could not compensate for a delayed or changing model with a wide range of alternatives. A customer who did not want the Model 3 or the outgoing Model Y had few other Tesla options.
The changeover therefore explains part of the early-2025 dip, especially the sharp monthly movements. It does not fully explain why the brand was losing share while EV demand remained strong, nor why the decline continued to attract unusually negative consumer and political attention.

Tesla’s European sales were still concentrated around the Model 3 and Model Y. Those cars remained competitive in areas such as charging access, efficiency and software, but their basic designs were no longer new. Meanwhile, Volkswagen, BMW, Renault, Hyundai, Kia, Volvo and Chinese manufacturers were adding electric SUVs, hatchbacks, saloons and premium models.

That gave buyers more ways to switch without abandoning EVs. A driver could choose a Volkswagen ID model, a BMW i model, a Hyundai Ioniq, a Kia EV, a Renault, a Volvo or a Chinese-brand vehicle instead of accepting Tesla’s limited choice. Reuters identified Tesla’s restricted product range and stronger Chinese competition as important contributors to its European weakness.
Price cuts could not solve every problem. Lower prices may improve value, but they do not provide a smaller car, a different body style, a newer interior or a brand image that appeals to a different customer. In a market becoming more crowded, Tesla’s original advantage was no longer enough by itself.
Elon Musk made the badge harder for some buyers to wear
Musk’s political interventions added a separate brand problem. He endorsed Germany’s far-right Alternative für Deutschland party and became involved in political disputes in Germany and the UK. That put the Tesla name into arguments that had little to do with range, charging or reliability.

Those figures do not prove that every dissatisfied respondent would have bought a Tesla, but they show the scale of the reputational challenge in two important markets.
The effect was visible in protests, showroom demonstrations and vandalism directed at Tesla facilities and vehicles in several European countries. Such incidents are not sales data, and they should not be used as a direct forecast of registrations. They do show that Tesla had become a political symbol in a way most rival carmakers had not.

A Global EV Alliance survey of more than 26,000 EV drivers in 30 countries found that 41% said they would avoid Tesla for political reasons. The sample consisted of EV drivers rather than the general population, so the result cannot be translated directly into a 41% sales loss. It does, however, support the claim that politics was influencing at least some potential buyers.
“Toxic” describes the brand perception—not every Tesla owner
The backlash was not universal. LCP Delta’s survey of 3,900 EV drivers in ten European countries found that 85% of Tesla drivers were quite likely or very likely to buy from Tesla again. That was slightly above the 84% result across all surveyed EV brands.

Existing owners can be satisfied with their car, charging access and software while new buyers become less willing to associate themselves with the company. Brand damage can therefore hurt conquest sales before it causes a mass exodus of current customers.
The same survey found that 59% of respondents would consider a Chinese EV brand for their next purchase. That points to a second pressure on Tesla: consumers were not merely choosing between Tesla and petrol cars. They were becoming more comfortable with a larger set of electric alternatives.
How much of the decline was caused by Musk?
There is no clean public sales report that separates product, supply and political effects. The safest conclusion is that Musk’s politics was one factor among several, rather than the sole explanation.

A March 2026 IZA/LISER discussion paper estimated that Musk’s political intervention in Germany reduced Tesla sales by at least 6,500 vehicles in the first half of 2025, representing at least €241 million. The paper also found that Tesla sales rose by as much as 30% in more right-leaning districts relative to more left-leaning districts.

That is an academic estimate, not a Tesla-reported number, and it should be read alongside the product transition and competitive pressures. The political effect could be significant without being the whole story.
Why the headline needs a date
“Teslas turn toxic as sales crash in Europe and the UK” works as a description of the January-February 2025 episode, but it is misleading as a current-status headline. Tesla registrations later rebounded sharply in several European markets, and the early-2025 figures should not be presented as a permanent collapse.
The more durable lesson is about market share. Tesla’s sales were vulnerable because its range was concentrated, its most important model was changing and its chief executive had made the brand politically divisive. A recovery in registrations does not erase those structural issues; nor does a bad two-month period prove that the company has permanently lost European buyers.
What to watch in future European Tesla figures
- Model Y deliveries: registrations should be compared after the changeover has passed, rather than treating the transition months as normal demand.
- Market share, not just unit sales: a sales rebound can still represent a weak performance if the overall EV market grows faster.
- Product mix: Tesla needs more competitive body styles and price points if it is to match the range offered by established and Chinese rivals.
- Brand surveys: purchase intent, owner loyalty and political dislike measure different things and should not be combined into one “Tesla sentiment” number.
- Country differences: Musk’s political effect is unlikely to be identical in France, Germany, Britain, Scandinavia and southern Europe.

Did Europeans stop buying electric cars?
