Stellantis had the most separate U.S. recall campaigns among the manufacturers compared by Motor1, with 72, followed by Ford with 67. If you mean the largest number of potentially affected vehicles, Tesla led Motor1’s 2024 comparison with 5,135,991 vehicles. Those are different measures: a campaign can cover a very large fleet, while many smaller campaigns can produce a higher campaign count.
The figures below concern U.S. recalls issued during calendar year 2024. Manufacturer comparisons are from Motor1; nationwide totals come from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Which automaker had the most recall campaigns?
Motor1 reported 72 recall campaigns for Stellantis and 67 for Ford in its 2024 manufacturer comparison. That makes Stellantis the campaign-count leader in the comparison cited here. The campaign figures are a secondary-source ranking, not a ranking reproduced from NHTSA’s annual-report summary table.
| Measure | Leader or reported figure | Source and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Separate recall campaigns | Stellantis: 72 | Motor1’s 2024 comparison; U.S. manufacturer campaigns |
| Separate recall campaigns | Ford: 67 | Motor1’s 2024 comparison; U.S. manufacturer campaigns |
| Potentially affected vehicles | Tesla: 5,135,991 | Motor1’s 2024 comparison; affected-vehicle population, not campaign count |

Which automaker recalled the most vehicles?
Tesla’s 5,135,991 potentially affected vehicles was the largest affected-vehicle figure in Motor1’s 2024 comparison. This number is the combined population attached to the campaigns reported for Tesla. It is not a count of vehicles that definitely experienced a defect or of people harmed.
Do not place Tesla’s vehicle total in the same ranking as Stellantis’ 72 campaigns. The two figures answer different questions:

- Campaign count: How many separate recall actions did a manufacturer issue?
- Affected population: How many vehicles were included in those actions?
How many recalls were recorded across the United States in 2024?
NHTSA’s 2024 Annual Report: Safety Recalls, published in April 2025, gives two totals because it separates all recall types from vehicle-only recalls.
| NHTSA 2024 scope | Recall campaigns | Affected units | What it includes |
|---|---|---|---|
| All recall types | 1,073 | 35,000,618 | Vehicles plus tire, child-seat and equipment recalls |
| Vehicle-only | 950 | 29,346,478 | Vehicle campaigns; excludes tires, child seats and equipment |
Because the scopes differ, the all-types total should not be substituted for the vehicle-only total. Neither annual-report figure is a manufacturer ranking.

Why campaign counts and affected-vehicle totals can disagree
One large campaign can outweigh many small ones
A single software or component issue may cover millions of vehicles. That can put a manufacturer first by affected population even if another manufacturer issued more individual campaigns.
Campaigns are actions, not a reliability score
Recall totals do not establish that an automaker is the least reliable or least safe. NHTSA says recall completion varies with factors including vehicle age, manufacturer, time to remedy and the recalled component. Completion rates therefore answer a different question from the number of campaigns issued.
Rank #4
The totals are U.S.-specific
The NHTSA figures are for U.S. data and calendar year 2024. Results from another country, model year, reporting period or regulator are not directly interchangeable.
How to verify an open recall on your vehicle
A manufacturer ranking cannot tell you whether a particular car has an open recall. Use NHTSA’s vehicle-specific lookup and follow the remedy instructions:
Best Value
- Open NHTSA’s official Vehicle Manufacturers page and select the recall-search option, or use NHTSA’s VIN lookup linked from its recall resources.
- Enter the vehicle identification number (VIN) exactly as shown on the vehicle or registration documents.
- Review the campaign description, safety risk, remedy and dealer instructions for that VIN.
- Contact the named manufacturer or an authorized dealer if the notice requires scheduling or if the vehicle record appears incomplete.
NHTSA’s manufacturer data portal, NHTSA Recalls by Manufacturer, provides campaign-level records with manufacturer and recall-type filters. For historical analysis, set the year and recall type, then specify whether you are sorting by campaign count or affected population. The portal states that manufacturers must notify NHTSA within five business days after determining that a product or original equipment contains a safety defect or fails to meet federal safety standards.
What the 2024 rankings do—and do not—tell you
- They identify reported recall activity, not the probability that a specific vehicle will fail.
- An affected-unit number is a potentially affected population, not a count of confirmed defective vehicles or completed repairs.
- Campaign totals are not normalized for sales, fleet size, vehicle age or miles driven, so they are not a fair standalone quality ranking.
- For an individual safety decision, the VIN result and the recall remedy matter more than an automaker’s position in a broad annual list.
The Bottom Line
Stellantis led the cited 2024 comparison by separate recall campaigns (72), while Tesla led by potentially affected vehicles (5,135,991). Use the metric that matches your question, and check your own VIN through NHTSA for an actionable answer.
