U.S. auto sales are on track for a more difficult 2026 than 2025, but the latest evidence does not support a collapse. Forecasts from Cox Automotive, S&P Global Mobility and S&P Global Ratings cluster between 15.7 million and 16.1 million new or light-vehicle sales, while midyear demand ran ahead of Cox Automotive’s earlier baseline.
What the 2026 forecasts actually show
The headline is a slower market, not a vanished market. Forecasts differ because they were issued at different times and use different assumptions, but all remain near 16 million U.S. new/light-vehicle sales.

| Publisher and timing | Measure | 2026 outlook | What it indicates |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cox Automotive, January 2026 | U.S. new-vehicle sales | 15.8 million | Down 2.4% from Cox’s 2025 estimate |
| Cox Automotive, September 2026 | U.S. new-vehicle sales | 16.1 million | Raised after stronger-than-expected sales |
| S&P Global Mobility, 2026 outlook | U.S. vehicle sales | 15.9 million | Near the middle of the current range |
| S&P Global Ratings, 2026 outlook | U.S. light-vehicle sales | 15.7 million | Most cautious of the three forecasts |
Cox’s January release described its expectation as “a slowing market, but still a good one.” Its interim chief economist, Jeremy Robb, also noted that “most vehicle sales metrics in 2025 were slightly stronger than many forecast – including us.” That context matters: the initial 2026 downgrade was made against a stronger 2025 result than forecasters had expected.

Affordability and interest rates
Higher borrowing costs increase the monthly payment required to finance a vehicle. Cox identifies affordability pressure and elevated interest rates as direct drags on demand. Even when shoppers still need a vehicle, payment constraints can push them toward a less expensive model, delay a purchase or shift demand from new to used vehicles.

Slower economic momentum
Cox also points to slower economic growth and less job creation. A softer employment backdrop can make households less willing or able to take on a large auto loan, reducing the number of buyers who qualify at prevailing rates.
Tariff uncertainty
S&P Global Ratings lists tariff uncertainty and the adjustment to a post-tariff market among the sector’s challenges. Tariffs can affect vehicle and component costs, pricing decisions and automaker margins. The uncertainty itself makes planning harder because companies must make production and pricing decisions before the final cost environment is clear.
The end of broad EV tax incentives
Cox identifies the lack of EV tax incentives as another headwind. Without those incentives, some electric vehicles become less affordable at the point of sale, while manufacturers and retailers must adjust to demand that is no longer supported by the same policy framework.

Why the data did not turn into a collapse
June demand exceeded the earlier run rate
Cox reported preliminary June 2026 sales of 1.36 million vehicles and an approximately 16.5 million seasonally adjusted annual rate (SAAR). That SAAR was above Cox’s earlier 16.1 million full-year forecast and showed that buyers were still entering the market despite elevated rates, weak housing activity and subdued consumer confidence.
SAAR is an annualized pace based on one month’s sales, not a count of vehicles sold during the year. A 16.5 million June SAAR therefore signals the speed of sales at that point; it does not guarantee a 16.5 million year-end total.
Cox raised its full-year estimate
In its September update, Cox lifted its 2026 full-year forecast to 16.1 million. The revision is evidence that actual sales had been more resilient than the January baseline implied, although the revised figure still describes a market with modest volume pressure rather than a return to unrestricted growth.

Market-share shifts show an uneven market
Cox’s September update said Asian brands were gaining share. General Motors remained the top seller, but its sales and share were softer. That combination is important: aggregate volume can remain close to 16 million while individual automakers experience very different results depending on product mix, pricing and regional demand.
What “rough” means for automakers
Lower volume is only part of the problem
A market near 16 million units is large, but slower growth can still pressure automakers. Interest-rate and affordability problems can make it harder to raise prices, while tariffs and the post-incentive adjustment can increase costs. The result can be margin compression even when annual unit sales remain near the forecasts shown above.
Forecast uncertainty is itself a business risk
The spread between 15.7 million and 16.1 million is only 400,000 vehicles, yet it is meaningful for production, staffing and inventory decisions. Automakers must plan capacity before they know how employment, rates, tariffs and consumer affordability will evolve. A small change in the total market can have a larger effect on a company that is overexposed to one segment or region.

Performance will vary by brand
The September share data illustrate why an industry-wide forecast cannot predict every company’s result. Asian brands were taking share while GM’s sales and share softened, even though GM remained the leading seller. Brand-level outcomes will depend on the vehicles available, pricing and how effectively each company adapts to the policy and cost changes described above.

For shoppers, the forecasts are a signal to pay attention to affordability rather than assume that a strong headline sales month means conditions are easy. Rates, vehicle prices, employment prospects and the loss of EV incentives all affect the transaction a particular buyer can afford. The national sales total cannot tell you whether a specific model, powertrain or local market will be inexpensive or plentiful.
Recommended Free Tools
Buyers considering an EV should calculate the purchase using incentives that are actually available to them, rather than relying on programs that have ended. Shoppers financing any vehicle should compare the total payment and loan cost, because a lower monthly payment achieved by extending the term can increase the overall amount paid.

The used-vehicle market is a separate but important indicator
Cox projects 20.5 million U.S. used-retail sales and 38.5 million total used-vehicle sales in 2026. Used-vehicle figures are not interchangeable with the new-vehicle forecasts: they cover a different market and include transactions outside retail channels. They do, however, show that vehicle demand remains broad even as new-car affordability is under pressure.
A shopper moving from a new vehicle to a used one changes the mix of sales; it does not necessarily represent a vehicle purchase disappearing altogether. That is one reason a softer new-vehicle outlook can coexist with substantial overall vehicle activity.
How to compare the next 2026 sales update
- Check the release date. A January forecast embeds different assumptions from a June sales report or a September revision.
- Identify the measure. Confirm whether the figure is an actual monthly volume, a full-year total or a seasonally adjusted annual rate.
- Separate new from used. New-vehicle, light-vehicle, used-retail and total-used figures answer different questions.
- Confirm the geography. The figures discussed here are U.S. forecasts; a global sales number is not a substitute.
- Read the assumptions. Pay attention to tariffs, EV incentives, interest rates, employment and affordability, because changes in any of them can move the forecast.
- Compare the range, not one decimal point. Cox at 16.1 million, S&P Global Mobility at 15.9 million and S&P Global Ratings at 15.7 million all support a slowdown while showing that the exact outcome remains uncertain.
Bottom line for 2026
Early sales data justified concern about a rougher operating environment, but they did not validate a crash scenario. Cox’s forecast moved up after resilient midyear demand, while independent estimates stayed close to the same 16-million-vehicle neighborhood. Affordability, borrowing costs, tariffs and the end of EV incentives remain the central risks, so expect uneven results by brand and vehicle type rather than a uniform industry collapse.
