There is no single Audi Drive Select mode that is best for every Audi in snow. If your exact model offers a snow or slippery-road profile, use it as the owner’s manual directs. If it does not, Auto or Comfort is a sensible starting point—not a guarantee of better traction. Keep the normal stability-control setting engaged unless the manual specifies otherwise for your situation, and adjust your speed and following distance for the road.
Which mode should you choose?
Start with the mode named for snow or slippery roads, if your Audi’s manual identifies one. Mode names and availability vary by model, year, and equipment; do not assume that a setting found on one Audi is available on yours. Audi’s general Drive Select overview lists Auto, Comfort, Dynamic, Efficiency, and Individual, with Allroad or Offroad on some Q and allroad models. It says Drive Select affects engine and steering, while additional behavior depends on the vehicle and its equipment. Audi’s technology overview describes those system differences.

If there is no snow-specific selection, Auto or Comfort is a reasonable everyday starting point. The available official information does not establish that either one is universally safer or improves braking in snow. Avoid treating Dynamic as a snow mode: no model-agnostic evidence ranks it, Comfort, or Auto for snowy-road performance.

Why Audi snow settings differ
Drive Select changes how vehicle systems respond; it is not one standardized control package across the entire Audi range. Some settings may affect steering, engine response, suspension, ride height, or drivetrain behavior, depending on the model and fitted equipment. Compare only settings available on your vehicle and consult its manual for what each one changes.

A model-specific snow program
Audi’s R8 V10 performance quattro is one example with Dry, Wet, and Snow programs. Audi says those programs take road friction into account and adjust ESC thresholds. Its R8 technology description says, “When the road surface is wet or covered in snow, for example, the control thresholds are adapted accordingly.” That is a description of this R8 system, not a promise that every Audi has a snow setting or behaves the same way.
Offroad and ESC are not universal snow instructions
Audi’s e-tron description covers model-specific Offroad Drive Select and ESC functions. It also describes ESC Sport as allowing more wheel slip on low-grip surfaces. Those details are not a recommendation to use ESC Sport or switch ESC off for ordinary public-road snow driving. Drive Select and ESC are distinct controls, even when a particular model coordinates their behavior. See Audi’s e-tron quattro and suspension description and follow the instructions for your own vehicle.

How to confirm the right setting for your Audi
- Go to Audi Owner’s Manual and use the vehicle identification number (VIN) lookup to find the manual matched to your car. Audi’s online manuals cover model years 2008 onward.
- In that manual, look up Drive Select or driving modes. Confirm whether a snow, slippery-road, Allroad, or Offroad selection exists and what systems it changes.
- Check the manual’s ESC or stability-control section separately. Keep the normal setting on unless Audi gives a specific instruction for the situation you face.
- Check the tire section and the vehicle’s tire placard for approved tire sizes and any restrictions on chains or other traction devices. Do not buy or fit a device based on generic Audi advice.
Tires and driving technique matter more than a mode label
A driving profile cannot create grip on a snow-covered road. NHTSA says winter tires are more effective than all-season tires in deep snow. Tire choice and correct fitment should be checked for the exact vehicle; Audi’s VIN-matched manual is a starting point for the car’s specifications. NHTSA’s TireWise guidance explains tire safety, while its winter driving tips advise slowing down and increasing following distance on slick or snow-covered roads.
NHTSA reports that in 2023, snow or sleet conditions were present in 101,390 police-reported crashes, including an estimated 22,293 injury crashes and 320 fatal crashes. These figures describe the hazards; they do not show that any Audi mode reduces crash risk or stopping distance.

What not to assume
- Do not assume every Audi has a dedicated snow mode; Audi’s R8 example is model-specific.
- Do not treat Drive Select and ESC as interchangeable settings. Check the manual’s guidance for each.
- Do not assume that quattro, a particular profile, or an ESC setting removes the need to slow down, leave more space, and drive smoothly.
- Do not infer a stopping-distance advantage for Auto, Comfort, Dynamic, or another mode. The cited official materials do not provide a model-agnostic comparison test for Audi Drive Select modes in snow.
