Depending on where you live, that agency may be called the DMV, Department of Motor Vehicles, Department of Driver Services, Bureau of Motor Vehicles, Department of Public Safety, or another equivalent licensing agency.
For the correct government website, start with the USA.gov state motor-vehicle-services directory. Select the state or territory that issued your license, then look for a page using terms such as driver record, driving history, motor vehicle record, MVR, or driving abstract.
Which driving record do you need?
Before ordering, find out exactly what the recipient wants. “Driving record” can refer to several different documents, and the names, contents, fees, and availability vary by jurisdiction.

Ask the recipient these questions before paying for a record:
- Does it need to be certified?
- How recent must the issue date be?
- Do they want a standard, three-year, lifetime, historical, or commercial-driver record?
- Do they need a record from a previous state as well as your current state?
- Will they accept an electronic document, or must it be mailed?
- Is a notarized authorization required if someone else is requesting it?
How to order your record from the official agency
- Identify the issuing jurisdiction. Use the state or territory that issued the license. If you have moved, do not automatically request the record from your current state unless it issued your current license or the recipient specifically asks for that state’s history.
- Open the agency’s official website. Use USA.gov’s directory rather than an unfamiliar advertisement or intermediary that asks for sensitive information.
- Search the agency’s site. Try “driver record,” “driving history,” “MVR,” “motor vehicle record,” “abstract,” or “records request.”
- Choose the correct product. Check whether the page offers standard, certified, historical, lifetime, or commercial-driver records.
- Prepare your information and identification. The agency may ask for your license or customer number, legal name, date of birth, current or former address, proof of identity, payment information, and an email or mailing address.
- Use the permitted request method. Depending on the jurisdiction, options may include an online portal, mail-in form, or in-person request.
- Save the result and confirmation. Keep the receipt, confirmation number, and the record itself. Use a secure device or location, especially if the document contains identifying information.
Online, mail, and in-person requests
Online: Usually the fastest and most convenient option when available, but online systems can require an account, identity verification, payment card, and a device that can save or print the result. For example, California’s online driver-record process lists a MyDMV account, payment information, and a device capable of saving or printing the record among its prerequisites. See the California DMV online driver-record instructions for that state’s current process.
Mail: A mailed request may be necessary for a certified document, a special record type, or a person who cannot use the online system. Read the form carefully: it may require a copy of identification, a signature, a check or other payment method, and a return address.
In person: Some agencies accept requests at an office. Appointment rules, accepted identification, payment methods, and available record types differ, so confirm the details before visiting.
There is no reliable nationwide fee, delivery time, certification rule, or format. Verify those details on the issuing agency’s current page instead of relying on a generic third-party summary.

What information can appear on a driving record?
A state record may include some combination of:
- License status and class
- Restrictions and endorsements
- Suspensions and revocations
- Reportable convictions
- Departmental or administrative actions
- Reported accidents
- Other information maintained under that jurisdiction’s motor-vehicle laws
The contents and retention periods are not uniform. A ticket, court case, accident, or other event may not appear if it falls outside the state’s reporting rules, retention period, or definition of a reportable event. Different categories can remain visible for different lengths of time.
For example, California says its current driver record contains reportable convictions, departmental actions, and accidents. It also explains that the former H6 or 10-year record is no longer available and that reporting periods are governed by California Vehicle Code requirements. New York’s standard-abstract information describes license status, restrictions, endorsements, suspensions, revocations, convictions, and accidents, while noting that categories can remain visible for different periods. These examples illustrate why a state-specific record description matters; they do not establish a nationwide rule.
What you may need to request the record
Have the following available, as applicable:
- Driver-license or customer-identification number
- Full legal name and date of birth
- Current and possibly former addresses
- Identity documentation
- Payment method
- Email address or mailing address
- Printer or secure device for saving the result
- Written authorization and a legally permitted purpose when requesting another person’s record
Requirements can change depending on the request method and the type of record. New York, for instance, uses a formal request process that can require identifying information, proof of identification, and a search fee; its materials also distinguish a driver-license abstract from other DMV records. Check the New York DMV driver-record request information if New York issued the license.

Can you get someone else’s driving record?
The ordinary consumer process is for requesting your own record. Personal information in state motor-vehicle records is protected by the federal Driver’s Privacy Protection Act (DPPA), subject to specific exceptions.

Disclosure may be allowed for purposes defined by law, which can include consent, government functions, certain motor-vehicle and public-safety purposes, and other specified uses. The fact that you know someone’s name or license number does not by itself give you a right to obtain the person’s record.
When a request concerns another person, the agency may require written consent, proof of identity, documentation of a permissible use, or additional forms. New York’s request materials demonstrate this practical requirement. Follow the issuing DMV’s privacy and permissible-use instructions; do not try to bypass them.

Is an employer’s driving-background report the same as a DMV record?
No. An employer may request a report from a consumer-reporting company, while you can separately order the official record maintained by the state. The two documents may differ in scope, terminology, reporting dates, and errors.
For employment screening, the Federal Trade Commission explains employer background-check rights. Generally, an employer must tell an applicant that a report may be used and obtain written permission before ordering it. If the employer is considering an adverse decision based on the report, the applicant must receive required notices and an opportunity to review and dispute inaccurate information.

- Follow the employer’s background-report process and review the report you receive or are given access to.
- Do not assume that a commercial background report is an official DMV document.

Use separate correction paths for the state record and an employment background report. Correcting one does not automatically correct the other.

If the state DMV record is inaccurate
- Compare the disputed entry with the record’s event date, case information, and description.
- Contact the issuing agency through its correction, review, or records-contact procedure.
- Collect supporting documents, such as a court disposition, payment record, clearance letter, proof of identity, or evidence that the entry belongs to another person.
- Ask what the agency requires to investigate, amend, or annotate the record.
- Keep copies of your request, attachments, correspondence, and any revised record.
If an employer’s report is inaccurate
- Obtain and review the report rather than relying only on the employer’s summary.
- Identify each inaccurate or incomplete item in writing.
- Dispute the information directly with the background-reporting company.
- Send clear supporting documents and retain proof of submission.
- Ask that a corrected report be sent to the employer, as described in the FTC’s consumer guidance.
If an error could affect a court matter, license, employment decision, insurance action, or other legal consequence, consider obtaining advice from a qualified professional familiar with the relevant jurisdiction. A paid service is not a substitute for the official DMV correction process, and any attorney or document-help provider should be independently verified.

- Am I using the agency that issued the license?
- Did I confirm whether the recipient wants a standard, certified, lifetime, historical, or commercial record?
- Did I check how recent the record must be?
- Did I confirm whether an electronic copy is acceptable?

- Am I requesting my own record, or can I document a legally permitted reason to request someone else’s?

Can I request someone else’s driving record?
