The best-known Monkeemobile—the 1966 Pontiac GTO custom sold by Barrett-Jackson in 2008—is reported to be in private hands, but its present location has not been confirmed in the available public records. There were two original Monkeemobiles, and the reported whereabouts of both are historical rather than verified current locations.

What is known about the Monkeemobile’s location?

Barrett-Jackson’s record shows that one Monkeemobile sold at its Scottsdale auction in 2008. A later historical account reports that this car went to a private collector in southeastern Michigan. That account also places the other original with a private collector in northern New Jersey. Neither report confirms where either car is today, and the public auction record does not name the 2008 buyer or establish the car’s current custody.

There is no verified current museum or other public display location in the available sources, so there is no confirmed place to visit either original.

Why are there two Monkeemobiles?

The Monkeemobile was created for The Monkees television series from a 1966 Pontiac GTO. Barrett-Jackson describes the car it sold as designed by Dean Jeffries and later re-kustomized by George Barris. A historical account distinguishes this Barris-associated car from a second original, whose history followed a different path.

Original car Documented or reported history What is known about its location
The car sold by Barrett-Jackson Barrett-Jackson lists the 1966 Pontiac GTO custom as Scottsdale Lot 1297 and marks it sold in 2008. The auction record identifies its connection to the television series and credits Jeffries and Barris. A secondary historical account reports that it went to a private collector in southeastern Michigan. Its present location is not confirmed.
The other original A secondary historical account says the car was left in Australia during the group’s 1968 tour, later surfaced in Puerto Rico, and was sold at a government auction in 1992. The account reports that it went to a private collector in northern New Jersey. Its present location is not confirmed.

The two cars should not be treated as one continuous ownership story: the 2008 Barrett-Jackson record documents the sale of one car, while the account of the Australia, Puerto Rico, and 1992 auction history concerns the other.

What happened at the 2008 Barrett-Jackson sale?

Barrett-Jackson’s Scottsdale docket lists the Monkeemobile as Lot 1297 and records it as sold. The auction company’s retrospective reports a sale price of $396,000 including the buyer’s commission. That figure is the reported total for the 2008 sale, not proof of the car’s current value or of its current owner.

Are Monkeemobile model kits available today?

The Monkeemobile also has a lasting connection to model cars. A historical account reports that MPC received rights to market a Monkeemobile kit and that more than 7 million kits were sold, citing a 1997 Pontiac Enthusiast Magazine account republished by The Monkees Home Page. That historical sales total does not establish whether a particular kit is currently in production or available for purchase.
