A 2025 Virgin Islands Police Department Carnival traffic advisory states: “Visitors, remember to drive on the left.” The headline’s “only” should be read as referring to U.S. jurisdictions; the available sources confirm the USVI instruction but do not establish a comprehensive legal comparison of every U.S. jurisdiction or identify the current statute behind the rule.
Which part of America drives on the left?
It is the U.S. Virgin Islands (USVI), including St. Thomas, St. John, and St. Croix. The clearest current visitor-facing evidence is the Virgin Islands Police Department’s 2025 Carnival traffic advisory, which directly instructs visitors to drive on the left: “Visitors, remember to drive on the left.”
This answers the practical question, but it is not a citation to the traffic law itself. The sources available here do not establish the exact current code provision, so it would be misleading to provide a statute number or claim that a particular law has been verified.
Why does the USVI drive on the left?
The islands’ history offers a likely explanation. A secondary historical account in West Indian Islands says left-side driving continued after the transfer from Danish rule to the United States and traces the convention to a British occupation during the Napoleonic era and the continuation of Danish administrative rules. Treat that as an attributed historical account, not as a conclusion stated in the official transfer announcement.

The Government of the U.S. Virgin Islands says St. Thomas, St. John, and St. Croix were formally transferred from Denmark to the United States on March 31, 1917. The Department of Agriculture also describes Danish rule and the 1917 transfer in its history account.
What should visitors keep in mind?
- Follow local signs and current directions from authorities; the police advisory is explicit that visitors should drive on the left.
- Do not assume the side of the road tells you where a vehicle’s steering wheel is. The cited sources do not establish vehicle configurations.
- For local driving information, the Bureau of Motor Vehicles says applicants preparing for the knowledge skills exam may purchase the USVI Driver’s Manual. Its page does not establish that visitors need the manual.
Does “the only place in America” mean the rule was legally compared everywhere?
No. The verified point is narrower: current USVI police guidance tells visitors to drive on the left. The sources cited here do not provide a comprehensive comparison across all U.S. jurisdictions, nor the current statutory provision governing the rule. The broad “only” phrasing should therefore not be mistaken for a documented legal survey.
