The car may be repaired, refurbished or sold on, keeping the battery in use. If the pack is removed, professionals may assess it for a second use such as stationary energy storage. Batteries that cannot continue in service—or are treated as waste—can be collected for recycling, which recovers materials for possible reuse. The route depends on the pack’s condition, chemistry, safety, economics, location and applicable rules.
What “end of life” means for an EV battery
There is no single age, mileage or state-of-health percentage that automatically makes every electric-vehicle battery “end of life.” A pack may no longer suit its original vehicle yet still be usable elsewhere; a battery’s first vehicle life ending is not the same thing as becoming waste or having no remaining use. Its condition and safety need to be assessed in context. The International Energy Agency discusses these distinctions in its Global EV Outlook 2026.
In practice, the possible routes are continued use in a car, professional assessment for another application, or collection and recycling. They are not guaranteed steps in a fixed sequence: a pack may be unsuitable for reuse, or local infrastructure and economics may favor another route.
Where the battery can go next
1. Stay in the car, or keep the car on the road
A used EV can be resold, repaired or refurbished instead of dismantled. If the car remains in service, its battery does too, potentially for years. Resale and repair can also move a vehicle—and its eventual battery retirement—to another market. The IEA says these routes can currently be more profitable than dismantling a used vehicle for parts, which can delay the battery’s arrival at a recycler.

- Be a Part of Something Bigger -- Recycling batteries isn't just responsibility – it's a step towards a circular economy. By doing your part, you're helping to conserve valuable resources and lessen the demand for new materials.
2. Be assessed for a second application
A removed pack may be evaluated for a different use, including stationary energy storage. That possibility is not a guarantee that a particular battery can be reused. An operator has to establish the pack’s condition and safety and consider its configuration, remaining useful life, repurposing cost, warranty, liability and compliance obligations. Falling prices for new batteries can make second-life projects harder to justify financially.
This is a professional reuse pathway, not a do-it-yourself project. EV packs are high-voltage equipment, and the IEA identifies safety, warranties, uncertain remaining life and responsibility for eventual end-of-life management as challenges for second-life business models.

3. Be collected for professional recycling
A battery that cannot continue in service, or that has become waste, may be sent through a professional collection and recycling system. Industrial processes aim to recover usable materials; what can be recovered and whether the process is commercially viable depend on chemistry, process, collection and market conditions. “Recycled” does not mean every component or material is recovered.
Chemistry affects the economics. Lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries have less of the high-value nickel and cobalt found in nickel-bearing chemistries, so the residual material value can be lower and recycling harder to finance. The IEA notes that collection measures, policy mandates and toll-based recycling models can help support recycling where recovered-material value alone is insufficient. How to think about the options
| Route | What it depends on | What it means for recycling |
|---|---|---|
| Continued vehicle use | Whether the car can be resold, repaired or refurbished. | Battery retirement is deferred; the vehicle may be in a different market when it eventually leaves service. |
| Second application | Pack condition and safety, suitable configuration, remaining life, professional responsibility and project economics. | Recycling is deferred if the pack is safely reused; reuse is not suitable or economic for every pack. |
| Collection and recycling | Whether the battery is waste or unsuitable for further use, plus local collection and processing options, chemistry and material prices. | Materials may be recovered for use in supply chains; recovery and profitability vary. |
For a specific vehicle, the practical route depends on where the car or battery is, its condition and which collection or processing infrastructure is available. A damaged or removed high-voltage pack should be handled through an appropriate professional channel, not treated like ordinary household waste. Contact the vehicle manufacturer, a producer-responsibility scheme or a qualified waste operator for locally applicable guidance; availability and requirements vary by jurisdiction.
Why the recycling stream is expected to grow later
Recyclers do not rely only on batteries removed from old vehicles. Manufacturing scrap is currently an important feedstock. The IEA estimates that it will account for two-thirds of available battery-recycling feedstock in 2030; in its analysis, end-of-life EV and storage batteries become the largest source from 2035 and exceed 90% of available feedstock by 2050. Those are estimates and projections, not measurements of what is happening in every market today.

- It comes with proper and safe packaging
The IEA and European Patent Office estimate that around 1.2 million EV batteries could reach end of life in 2030 and 14 million in 2040. These are future-volume estimates, not a count of batteries already retired. Their 2026 report also says battery-circularity patenting grew by an average of 42% per year from 2017 to 2023; that figure describes patenting activity, not a recycling rate. The report is Battery Circularity: Innovation trends for a future source of critical materials.
In an IEA 2025 scenario that assumes continued increases in collection rates, battery recycling could provide 20–30% of lithium, nickel and cobalt demand by 2050. This is a scenario estimate, not a guaranteed contribution. Whether it is achieved depends in part on collecting batteries and building workable recycling systems.

Where recycling happens—and why location matters
Battery location is not fixed by where the car was first sold. Used-vehicle trade can shift both the car’s remaining service life and its eventual recycling feedstock across borders. The IEA’s Global EV Outlook 2026 reports that China hosts over 85% of global battery recycling capacity, measured as material-recovery capacity. That is a capacity figure—not the share of batteries collected there or the share actually processed in a given year.
What EU battery rules say about a second life
Rules are jurisdiction-specific. In the European Union, Regulation (EU) 2023/1542 sets a framework for batteries and waste batteries, with requirements that phase in and vary by battery type and provision; there is no single deadline that describes every obligation. The EU Batteries Regulation is not a global rule.
The European Commission’s Battery Passport FAQ says a new passport is required if a battery is repurposed or remanufactured, or if a battery that has become waste is prepared for reuse or repurposing. A simple repair does not require a new passport under the FAQ; the passport ceases to exist if the battery is recycled. This applies to the EU passport framework, not to batteries worldwide.
