The “in four years” promise referred to a 2028 target for the earlier ES-30, reported in July 2024; it is no longer the company’s current schedule. Heart’s experimental X1 demonstrator has flown, but that does not mean the production aircraft is certified or carrying passengers.
What happened to the four-year promise?
New Atlas’s July 29, 2024, report said Heart Aerospace planned to put its ES-30 into service in 2028—four years after the article appeared. That was a forecast, not a current service date. In September 2026, Heart announced the ES-36 as its production aircraft, describing it as an evolution of the ES-30 and setting a new entry-into-service target of 2031.
Heart’s current target is therefore five years later than the date described in the 2024 headline. It remains a company target, not a guaranteed launch date.
What is the ES-36?
The ES-36 is a 36-seat hybrid-electric regional aircraft. Heart describes its design as a series hybrid: two powertrains each use a 1.65-megawatt electric motor to turn a propeller. Batteries charged on the ground supply power for all-electric operation; for longer trips, two turbogenerators supplement the batteries.

| Operating mode | Heart’s stated range | Energy source |
|---|---|---|
| All-electric | 125 miles (200 km), plus reserves | Ground-charged batteries |
| Hybrid | 745 miles (1,200 km), plus reserves | Batteries supplemented by two turbogenerators |
These are manufacturer-published specifications, not independently demonstrated commercial performance. Heart’s ES-36 product page also lists 25 kg (55 lb) of luggage per passenger and a 30-minute charging time; those, too, are company figures.
What has flown—and what has not?
X1 demonstrator
Heart says its X1 demonstrator made its first flight on August 12, 2026. The company reported a 27-minute piloted flight reaching 1,100 feet above ground level. It was flown under an FAA Special Airworthiness Certificate in the Experimental Category. Heart describes X1 as a technology and development demonstrator representative of the ES-30, intended to validate technologies, aerodynamics, flight performance and the company’s aircraft-development capability.

That flight was a milestone for X1, not the ES-36’s first flight, type certification or entry into passenger service.
ES-36 development schedule
In its September 2026 announcement, Heart said the first pre-production ES-36 was being built at its Los Angeles pilot manufacturing plant. The company targets the aircraft’s first flight for the second half of 2028 and entry into service in 2031, conditional on FAA Part 25 certification.

What does JSX’s agreement mean?
Heart announced that JSX signed a deposit-backed purchase agreement for 50 ES-36 aircraft, with purchase rights for 50 more. Heart and JSX say they will work together on cabin configuration, charging and turnaround procedures, route planning and airport readiness. The agreement is a customer commitment and planning partnership; it is not evidence that aircraft have been delivered, certified or placed into scheduled service.

Heart targets operating costs at least 40 percent below those of legacy regional aircraft, citing factors such as energy, maintenance and simplified systems. Its product page also presents a relative direct-operating-cost comparison with turboprops and regional jets. These are company forecasts, not independent measurements of a certified aircraft in service.

Heart says all-electric routes would have zero operational CO₂ emissions and that hybrid operation would produce substantially lower emissions. “Operational” is important: the claim concerns aircraft operation, not the full lifecycle emissions of manufacturing, electricity generation, fuel production and disposal. The company material cited here does not provide an independently verified lifecycle comparison.
