Flush the cooling system and replace the coolant on the interval in your tractor’s operator manual, for your exact model and the coolant it uses. No universal schedule applies across brands or model years. In the manufacturer examples reviewed for this guide, Kubota’s B26 manual sets the service at every 2,000 hours or two years, whichever comes first, while John Deere’s intervals depend on the coolant product and whether the coolant is tested.
Start with the manual for your exact tractor
Coolant intervals are set per machine, not per brand. Before you schedule anything, confirm these four details, because each one can change the answer:
- Model and serial or year range. A manual written for one model may not cover the tractor on your property, even when the names look alike.
- Coolant formulation. Deere’s extended-interval guidance is tied to its Cool-Gard coolant products. A tractor filled with a different coolant follows different rules.
- Whether the coolant is tested. Some manufacturer schedules extend the drain interval only when the coolant is checked at set intervals and its conditioner level is maintained.
- Hour meter and calendar history. Most schedules count both hours and elapsed time. Your service log needs both numbers.
If the manual is missing, the tractor’s dealer or the manufacturer’s service information can confirm the correct schedule for your serial number. Do not borrow an interval from a different model’s manual.
How “whichever comes first” works in practice
Most manufacturer coolant schedules use two limits: an hour count and a time limit. The one you reach first sets the service date. A tractor that runs few hours will hit the calendar limit long before the hour limit, and a heavily used tractor will do the opposite. The table below uses the Kubota B26 example (2,000 hours or two years) to show which limit governs at different usage levels. It is arithmetic for illustration, not a measured result.

- Clear Out Cooling System Buildup: Orion Motor Tech's coolant system flush gun combines compressed air and water flow to help remove rust, scale, sludge, and debris from radiators, heater cores, and cooling passages, helping coolant move more freely
- Flush at Home More Easily: No need for shop visits or complicated equipment. Simply connect a garden hose and air supply, choose the right nozzle, and start flushing. The compact 12.6" design makes it easier to maneuver around tight engine bays
- Fits Common Hose Setups: This air & water combo radiator flusher kit includes 5/8" and 3/4" garden hose adapters plus a 1/4" brass air fitting, so you can connect to many standard water and air supply setups
- Less Leaking, More Control: The brass air inlet fitting and included PTFE thread seal tape create a tighter connection to help prevent air loss while flushing. A more secure seal keeps pressure more consistent during the job
- Easier on Your Hands: The lock-on trigger keeps water flowing without constant squeezing, reducing hand strain during longer flushing jobs. This heater core flush kit includes the flush gun, hose adapters, brass air fitting, and PTFE tape for quick setup
| Average annual hours | Time to reach 2,000 hours | Limit that governs under the B26 example |
|---|---|---|
| 100 | About 20 years | Two years (calendar) |
| 500 | About 4 years | Two years (calendar) |
| 1,000 | About 2 years | Both limits fall at the same point |
| 1,500 | About 16 months | 2,000 hours (hour count) |
The practical lesson is that a lightly used tractor still needs regular coolant service. Coolant ages with time, even when the engine sits idle for much of the year.
Manufacturer schedule examples
The examples below show how schedules differ. None of them should be applied to a tractor outside the manual that states them.

Kubota B26
The B26 operator manual lists flushing the cooling system and changing the coolant at every 2,000 hours or two years, whichever comes first. The manual phrases the requirement as: “Be sure to do the following servicing once every 2 000 hours or biennially, whichever comes first.” The copy reviewed does not state a publication year for this edition, so confirm the wording in the manual you own. This schedule applies to the B26 described in that manual, not to every Kubota tractor.
John Deere 5065M through 5105M
The Deere manual for this family gives two years or 2,000 hours as the standard drain interval when Cool-Gard is not used. It also describes longer schedules when the coolant is checked annually and pre-diluted Cool-Gard is used. Read the full conditions attached to those longer intervals before relying on them, because the extension depends on maintaining the coolant as specified.

John Deere Cool-Gard II
Deere’s cooling-system guidance describes Cool-Gard II as a six-year or 6,000-hour formulation. That extension is conditional. The coolant must be checked for conditioner level every 600 hours or 12 months, whichever comes first. If the coolant is not tested on that cycle, the guidance gives a shorter drain interval. Use the table in the manual for the exact figure.
Coolant testing and extended intervals
Testing is the step that decides whether a long interval is valid. If your tractor uses a coolant that allows an extended interval, follow this sequence:

- Find the testing requirement in the manual, typically 600 hours or 12 months, whichever comes first, for Deere cooling systems that use Cool-Gard II.
- Test the coolant conditioner level with an approved method. Deere names its own coolant test kit and its CoolScan analysis service as options.
- Record the date, hour reading, and result in your maintenance log.
- If a test shows the conditioner is low, or a test is missed, fall back to the shorter drain interval the manual gives for untested coolant.
A test kit is a convenient way to meet the requirement, but it does not replace the interval itself. Use it only with a coolant the test method supports.

A tractor that runs hot does not automatically need a flush. The Kubota B26 manual asks operators to keep the grille and radiator screen clear to help prevent overheating, so external debris is the first thing to check. Work through the troubleshooting section of your manual before draining anything. Common causes to rule out include:

- A blocked grille or radiator screen, which restricts airflow through the radiator.
- Low coolant level, which may point to a leak rather than a service problem.
- A loose or worn fan belt, which can reduce coolant flow.
- Coolant that is old or out of specification, which a test can confirm.
Flushing can be part of the repair if testing or inspection shows contaminated or spent coolant. It is not a cure for debris blocking airflow outside the radiator.
Draining the system safely
Coolant service involves hot, pressurized fluid and a waste product that must be handled properly. Use this sequence:
Quick Recap
- Shut the engine off and let the system cool completely before opening anything.
- Do not remove the radiator cap while the coolant is hot. Kubota’s manual says to release pressure slowly after the system has cooled.
- Drain the coolant into a clean container sized for the full system capacity listed in your manual.
- Refill with the coolant type the manual specifies. Kubota’s M6040 manual warns against mixing different types of antifreeze, so do not top off with a different product unless the manual allows it.
- Take drained coolant to a facility that accepts it, following local disposal rules. Do not pour it onto soil, into drains, or into waterways. The B26 manual includes disposal precautions for this reason.
