The careful version of the “world’s first” claim is that GM describes Hydra-Matic as the industry’s first fully automatic transmission—not the first transmission with any automatic features. Oldsmobile had offered an earlier Automatic Safety transmission in 1937.
What Oldsmobile introduced in 1940
GM’s history of the Hydra-Matic says the transmission was offered on the 1940 Oldsmobile as a $57 option. The company calls it the industry’s first fully automatic transmission. GM Heritage: “Introducing the Automatic Transmission”
That qualification matters: “automatic” can describe different degrees of automation. The 1937 Oldsmobile Automatic Safety transmission predates Hydra-Matic, so the 1940 claim is not that no earlier transmission automated any part of driving. Rather, GM’s claim concerns a fully automatic transmission. The U.S. Department of Transportation report documents the earlier Automatic Safety and says it had many of the ingredients later used in Hydra-Matic. U.S. DOT report
How the timeline fits together
- 1937: Oldsmobile’s Automatic Safety transmission appears, according to the U.S. DOT report. It was an earlier system, distinct from the fully automatic Hydra-Matic introduced later. U.S. DOT report
- 1940 model year: GM introduced Hydra-Matic as an option on Oldsmobile; GM gives the option price as $57. GM Heritage
- 1941: Cadillac added Hydra-Matic the following year, according to GM. GM Heritage
- By 1945: A Federal Register table separately identifies a 1940 Oldsmobile with “automatic transmission” and 1941 Oldsmobiles with “Hydramatic transmission,” offering a period record of the terminology and application. Federal Register, February 2, 1945
Why the word “first” needs a qualifier
The strongest concise description is “the first fully automatic transmission,” attributed to GM. Calling Hydra-Matic simply “the first automatic transmission” can obscure the 1937 Automatic Safety and invite a broader claim than the evidence supports. The DOT report establishes the earlier transmission’s existence and relationship to the later design, but the available historical accounts here do not provide enough operating detail for a precise technical comparison of how much shifting or clutch work each system required.

What changed after the introduction
GM says Cadillac adopted Hydra-Matic in 1941 and that the innovation was soon adopted across the industry. That is GM’s retrospective account; it does not establish a specific market share, adoption rate, or timetable for every automaker. GM Heritage
Hydra-Matic-equipped Oldsmobiles also had an accessibility role. The Smithsonian documents that during and after World War II, Oldsmobiles were adapted for disabled veterans using Hydramatic transmissions alongside other modifications. The transmission was one part of a broader effort to make the cars accessible. Smithsonian National Museum of American History: “Driving with Disabilities: Postwar Era”

What period records add
A 1945 Federal Register table is useful because it distinguishes a 1940 Oldsmobile described as having an automatic transmission from 1941 Oldsmobiles identified as having Hydramatic transmissions. It corroborates period use of both the broader term and the product name, rather than relying only on later summaries. Federal Register, February 2, 1945
