If you are hoping for a dated answer, here it is: as of October 8, 2026, Mazda has not announced a reveal date, an on-sale date, or a production powertrain for a next-generation MX-5. The car sold in the United States today is the fourth-generation Miata that debuted for model year 2016, and Mazda’s own 2026 model announcement presents it as a continuation of that generation, not as its successor.
Mazda has confirmed that it is considering development of the next-generation car, and its chief executive has said the successor must be ready for a world without a combustion engine. Those are real signals, but they are planning statements. They are not a timetable, and they do not tell a buyer what the next car will be. The sections below separate what is confirmed from what is not, so you can decide whether waiting makes sense for you.
What Mazda has and has not confirmed
Mazda North American Operations announced the 2026 MX-5 Miata on January 27, 2026. That release describes targeted interior refinements and places the car inside the fourth-generation line. It is a current-model announcement, not a preview of a new generation.
The more significant development came in August 2026. In a MotorTrend report dated August 3, 2026, Mazda confirmed that it is considering development of the next-generation MX-5 and that the remarks attributed to CEO Masahiro Moro were accurate. The company’s statement, as quoted by MotorTrend, reads: “We are currently considering the development of the next-generation MX-5.”

Reporting available as of October 8, 2026 does not establish any of the following:
- A reveal date or event for a next-generation car
- An on-sale date, in any year
- Whether the successor will be battery-electric, hybrid, combustion-only, or offered with a manual transmission
- Final dimensions, weight, pricing, or trim structure
Any year offered as a launch date beyond these announcements, including 2028, is a forecast, not something Mazda has said.

What the CEO said, and how to read it
MotorTrend attributes the following sentence to Moro in his interview with Auto Motor und Sport: “the successor [to the current Miata] must also be ready for a scenario without a combustion engine.” The same reporting says Moro set an engineering target weight range of 1,000 to 1,200 kilograms for the car.
Two points keep that comment in proportion. First, the weight range is an engineering target as reported by MotorTrend, not a final curb-weight specification. Second, the remark describes engineering flexibility: a platform that can accommodate a powertrain without an internal-combustion engine. It does not, on its own, confirm a battery-electric MX-5, and it does not say that the internal-combustion option is being dropped.

The 2026 MX-5 you can buy in the US
Because the next car has no confirmed date, the practical choice today is the current model. Mazda North American Operations published the following starting MSRPs in its January 27, 2026 release. These are starting prices as stated in that release, not dealer transaction prices, and they may not reflect current fees or incentives.

The release lists the 2.0-liter Skyactiv-G four-cylinder engine, rated at 181 horsepower. It also lists optional equipment, including a Club-related package with Brembo brakes, BBS wheels, and Recaro seats. Check the release’s option list against the car you are considering, because option availability can differ by trim and dealer order.

The European 2027 update is not a US signal
Mazda Europe announced updates for the 2027 model year on June 8, 2026, covering grades, special editions, and equipment. It shows that the MX-5 continues to receive model-year changes while a successor is still undecided. It does not show a US 2027 configuration, and it does not show a new generation. European trim names, equipment, and engine availability should not be applied to the US car without market-specific information.

If you need a car within the next year and a known configuration matters more than the newest technology, the current model is the only option with published specifications. If you can accept an unknown date and an unknown powertrain, and you value the possibility of a different car, waiting carries that uncertainty. Neither choice is wrong; the decision depends on how you rank timing against the car you ultimately get.
Signals that would change this picture
The following would be meaningful evidence, and none of them has been announced as of October 8, 2026:
- An official Mazda reveal, event, or dated statement for a next-generation MX-5
- A stated powertrain for the next car, rather than a planning direction
- US-specific pricing or a US on-sale timeline
- Changes to the US model lineup in future model-year announcements that point to a successor
Until one of these appears, treat any date or powertrain claim for the next MX-5 as speculation, and check Mazda’s own announcements before making a purchase decision.
