It was one of three SX/4 model years, and its engine and transmission depended on how it was ordered: the standard setup used a 2.5-liter four-cylinder and four-speed manual, while a 4.2-liter six, five-speed manual and automatic configurations were also listed.
What made the SX/4 an Eagle?
AMC introduced the SX/4 for 1981 as a smaller Series 50 member of the Eagle family, based on the Spirit. Its hatchback body and raised stance gave it a different role from the larger Eagle body styles, while its selectable four-wheel-drive system connected it to the rest of the line. The result was not a modern, always-on AWD crossover: the 1982 year-by-year specification reference says Select Drive required the vehicle to be stopped before switching drive modes. The model’s advertising slogan, as reproduced in a specialist history, was “The sports car that doesn’t always need a road.” That line captures the SX/4’s sporty hatchback presentation, though it is a period marketing phrase rather than a technical description. | Item | 1982 SX/4 specification |
|---|---|
| Standard engine | 151 cu in (2.5 L) GM four-cylinder |
| Optional engine | 258 cu in (4.2 L) AMC six-cylinder |
| Standard transmission | Four-speed manual |
| New manual option for 1982 | Five-speed manual |
| Automatic configurations listed | Three-speed automatic with the six, and also in the four-cylinder SX/4 configuration |
These are the combinations identified by the specialist reference; they should not be collapsed into a claim that every SX/4 had the six-cylinder engine or five-speed gearbox. The source notes a towing-package axle ratio but does not establish the other 1982 U.S. axle ratios, so a precise ratio should be checked against documentation for the individual car. How many 1982 SX/4s were built?
The specialist model history reports 10,445 SX/4s built for the 1982 model year. Its reported totals put that figure between the 1981 launch-year count and the much smaller 1983 final-year count:

| 1982 | 10,445 |
| 1983 | 2,259 |
These are attributed figures from a specialist secondary compilation, not a newly verified factory production ledger. They establish the 1982 car’s place in the short SX/4 run, which ended after the 1983 model year. AMC Eagle SX/4 (1981–1983): The Four-Wheel-Drive Sport Coupe
What did the period fuel-economy rating say?
The specialist year-by-year reference lists a historical EPA rating of 23 mpg city and 32 mpg highway for the 1982 SX/4 with the four-cylinder engine and five-speed manual. That rating applies to that specific combination; it is not a promise of present-day fuel economy, which will depend on a particular car’s condition and use. AMC Eagle Specs by Year (1980–1988)

Where to find 1982 SX/4 documentation
For hands-on service or restoration work, AMC Lives lists a factory-authorized reproduction technical service manual for 1982–83 AMC models, including Eagle. It covers multiple models rather than being an SX/4-only manual. The retailer listing does not establish current stock or availability through Amazon, so confirm the manual’s coverage and availability with the seller before relying on it. AMC’s archived 1982 Eagle folder is another period reference for original wording and equipment context. It is a brochure scan, not a substitute for service information. 1982 American Motors Eagle Folder
