What Polestar announced, and when
On August 14, 2024, Polestar announced that production of the Polestar 3 had started at its facility in Ridgeville, South Carolina. The company called it the first Polestar model produced on two continents and said the plant would make vehicles for customers in the United States and Europe. Polestar’s production-start announcement marks the beginning of South Carolina manufacturing, not a customer delivery.
In its August 29, 2024, second-quarter update, Polestar said the first South Carolina-produced cars were expected to be handed over to customers in the following weeks. Where the Polestar 3 is made
South Carolina was not the model’s only production location when US manufacturing began. Polestar had also identified Chengdu, China, as a Polestar 3 production site. The August 2024 announcement described the South Carolina facility as serving US and European customers; it did not claim that every Polestar 3 was built there.

In a March 31, 2026, announcement, Polestar set out its intention to consolidate Polestar 3 manufacturing in Charleston, South Carolina. A related SEC filing describes the planned consolidation as covering global production except for vehicles for the China domestic market. What “US-made” means in this case
Polestar described the South Carolina-built SUV as an electric vehicle assembled in America. CEO Thomas Ingenlath said in the company’s August 2024 announcement: “Manufacturing Polestar 3 in the USA is a crucial step for us. Now we offer customers in America an electric SUV that is built in America.” This is the company’s description of its manufacturing strategy; it is not independent evidence of delivery speed, customer satisfaction, or a particular level of domestic content.

Polestar’s 2025 sustainability report provides a more specific account of US-plant content: around 50% by weight of the vehicle’s steel content comes from components stamped at the US plant. The report says 27% of that stated steel share is post-consumer and post-industrial recycled material. These are manufacturer-published figures with the scope given by Polestar; they should not be read as percentages of the entire vehicle or as independently verified measures.
Do US-built and China-built Polestar 3s differ?
The available company sources establish different production locations and describe intended customer-market coverage. They do not establish differences between vehicles from the two sites in build quality, equipment, price, or performance. A buyer should not assume that a particular specification or price follows from the factory location alone.

The announcements establish when South Carolina production began and what Polestar expected about initial handovers at the time. They do not establish the first customer’s exact delivery date, current US inventory, current pricing, or delivery estimates.
