Lexus described the GX as offering “an unparalleled combination of elegant features, off-road capability and luxurious quality” in its 2024 GX announcement. Lexus described the TX as “a comfortable, yet dynamic way of moving up to seven people” in its 2024 TX press release. Those descriptions capture the basic split accurately.

The specifications above come from Lexus’s 2024 TX product guide, 2024 TX brochure, 2024 GX brochure, and official Lexus launch materials. Equipment, seating, towing, and fuel-economy results can vary by trim or configuration.
Is the Lexus GX bigger than the Lexus TX?
The 2024 Lexus TX is longer than the 2024 Lexus GX, but the GX is wider when measured with its mirrors. The TX measures approximately 203.1 inches long, 78.3 inches wide with the mirrors folded, and 70.1 inches tall, with a 116.1-inch wheelbase. The GX measures approximately 197.04 inches long, 83.22 inches wide including its mirrors, and 75.39 to 76.18 inches tall depending on trim, with a 112.2-inch wheelbase.

|---|---|---|
| Length | Approximately 197.04 inches | Approximately 203.1 inches |
| Width | Approximately 83.22 inches including mirrors | Approximately 78.3 inches with mirrors folded |
| Height | Approximately 75.39–76.18 inches | Approximately 70.1 inches |
| Wheelbase | 112.2 inches | 116.1 inches |
Those measurements explain why “bigger” depends on the dimension being discussed. The TX occupies more length and wheelbase for passenger and cargo packaging. The GX is taller and wider across its mirrors, consistent with its more upright, trail-oriented design. The TX’s longer body does not make it the more capable off-road vehicle, and the GX’s taller body does not give it more usable family cargo room.
Which SUV has more seating and cargo space?
The TX has the clearer published advantage for passenger and cargo practicality. Lexus lists 41.6 inches of front legroom, 39.5 inches of second-row legroom, and 33.5 inches of third-row legroom for the TX, along with 20.2 cubic feet behind the third row, 57.4 cubic feet with the third row folded, and 97 cubic feet with both rear rows folded.
Lexus says the TX can seat up to seven people, with second-row captain’s chairs available on specified versions. The TX’s longer body and family-focused packaging make the third row and luggage area its central strengths. Lexus’s TX announcement specifically says, “With 20.2 cubic feet of cargo space provided behind the third row, the TX ensures nothing has to be left behind.” The published dimensions and cargo figures are in the official 2024 TX release and TX brochure.
The GX seats up to seven in Premium, Premium+, Luxury, and Luxury+ grades. The Overtrail and Overtrail+ grades seat up to five, because those versions prioritize trail equipment rather than maximum passenger capacity. Applicable GX grades can use second-row captain’s chairs or a 60:40 split-folding bench.

Lexus does not provide a directly equivalent cubic-foot cargo table in the cited GX materials. Lexus does say the new GX improves luggage space over the previous generation and can carry up to five suitcases with the third row folded. That establishes the TX as the better-documented and more practical family hauler without pretending that the two published cargo measurements are directly comparable.
Which powertrain is stronger: the GX or TX?
The GX has the simpler and more towing-focused powertrain: every cited 2024 U.S. GX configuration uses a 3.4-liter twin-turbocharged V6 producing 349 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque, paired with a 10-speed Direct Shift automatic transmission.
The TX gives buyers three distinct powertrain choices:
- TX 350: A 2.4-liter turbocharged inline-four producing 275 horsepower, with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive depending on configuration.
- TX 500h F SPORT Performance: A 2.4-liter turbocharged hybrid inline-four producing 366 net combined horsepower, with standard DIRECT4 all-wheel drive.
- TX 550h+: A 3.5-liter V6 plug-in-hybrid system producing 404 horsepower, with standard DIRECT4 all-wheel drive.
The TX 550h+ has the highest listed horsepower, but horsepower alone does not determine which SUV is better for a buyer. The GX combines its V6 with standard full-time 4WD, a dedicated ladder frame, and a substantially higher tow rating. The TX’s powertrain menu is more versatile for buyers choosing between lower cost, hybrid efficiency, and plug-in operation. Lexus details the three TX systems in its 2024 TX product guide.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhich gets better gas mileage, the GX or TX?
The TX gets better published fuel economy, especially in hybrid form. Lexus estimates the TX 350 FWD at 21/27/23 mpg city/highway/combined, the TX 350 AWD at 20/26/23 mpg, and the TX 500h at 27/28/27 mpg. Lexus also estimates 33 miles of all-electric driving range for the TX 550h+ plug-in hybrid.
The 2024 GX is listed at 15/21/17 mpg city/highway/combined. These are manufacturer estimates, not independent real-world test results. The GX’s figures should be considered alongside its twin-turbo V6, standard full-time 4WD, towing rating, and off-road hardware rather than treated as a direct measure of ownership cost for every driver.
The fuel-economy figures and the TX 550h+ electric-range estimate appear in the 2024 Lexus TX brochure; the GX estimates appear in the 2024 Lexus GX brochure.

Which Lexus SUV is better for towing?
The GX is decisively better for towing. Lexus lists up to 9,096 pounds for GX Overtrail grades and up to 9,063 pounds for Premium and Premium+ grades in the relevant configurations. Lexus lists 5,000 pounds for the TX powertrains described in its official product guide.

| Towing question | 2024 Lexus GX | 2024 Lexus TX |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum listed capacity | Up to 9,096 pounds | 5,000 pounds |
| Best use case | Large travel trailers, heavier boats, equipment, and remote-camping loads | Small trailers, family boats, recreational equipment, and lighter utility loads |
| What to verify | Trim, equipment, hitch setup, payload, passengers, and trailer weight | Powertrain, drivetrain, payload, passengers, and trailer weight |
A maximum tow rating is not a recommendation to load the vehicle to that figure without checking the complete combination. Trailer tongue weight, passengers, luggage, payload, hitch equipment, and the specific vehicle configuration all matter. The GX’s advantage is the much larger capacity ceiling, not a guarantee that every GX is appropriate for every trailer.
Is the GX more off-road capable than the TX?
Yes. The GX is substantially more specialized for technical off-road driving than the TX because the GX has a GA-F ladder-frame architecture, standard full-time 4WD, and a Torsen limited-slip locking center differential. Lexus says the frame is designed to withstand twisting forces off-road, support suspension articulation, and improve stability.
GX Overtrail and Overtrail+ grades are the clearest choice for serious trail use. Those grades include standard 33-inch all-terrain tires on 18-inch wheels, an electronically controlled locking rear differential, and the Electronic Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System. The GX’s clearance, drivetrain hardware, and trail-oriented design make it the better base for rough routes, recovery situations, and outdoor equipment.
The TX can handle ordinary unpaved roads and offers all-wheel-drive configurations, but the cited TX materials do not position it as a technical off-road counterpart to the GX. The TX’s strengths are comfortable transportation, interior space, and efficient long-distance travel. The GX’s off-road and towing specifications are documented in Lexus’s GX press materials.

Lexus identifies a cargo mat and other accessories in its 2024 GX brochure.
Which one is better for a family of seven?
The TX is usually the better choice for a family of seven because the TX is designed around three-row passenger space, has 33.5 inches of published third-row legroom, and retains 20.2 cubic feet behind the third row. A family can use the third row while still carrying groceries, sports bags, or road-trip luggage.

- Load Range XL, 4-Ply Rated, 4-PR
The GX can carry up to seven in the appropriate grades, but the GX Overtrail and Overtrail+ versions seat only five. A family choosing the GX must therefore match the trim to its seating needs. The GX makes more sense for a seven-person household only when towing, trail access, or adventure equipment is important enough to outweigh the TX’s cargo and efficiency advantages.
Which one is better for road trips?
The TX is better for paved highway road trips when the trip involves several passengers, substantial luggage, or minimizing fuel stops. The TX has the longer wheelbase, more published third-row legroom, substantially more published cargo volume, hybrid choices, and the TX 550h+ plug-in-hybrid option.
The GX is better for road trips that end at remote campsites, include rough roads, require a large trailer, or involve recovery and outdoor equipment. Standard full-time 4WD and the GX’s stronger towing and trail hardware matter more in those circumstances than the TX’s extra cargo volume.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How much did each SUV cost at the 2024 launch?
The 2024 Lexus TX launched with a starting MSRP of $55,050 including delivery, while the 2024 Lexus GX launched at $64,250 including the delivery, processing, and handling fee. The TX therefore started $9,200 below the GX before trim matching, options, taxes, dealer charges, incentives, or financing.
These are historical 2024 launch MSRPs, not current 2026 used-market prices. Used GX and TX values depend on mileage, condition, trim, location, accident history, equipment, and market conditions; a current used-price comparison requires separate market research. Lexus announced the launch pricing in its GX announcement and TX announcement.
What safety evidence is available?
The available dossier does not establish that either SUV is categorically safer than the other. The TX has published 2024 IIHS crash-test evidence, while a directly comparable 2024 GX IIHS result was not established in the reviewed sources.

IIHS lists an acceptable driver-side small-overlap frontal rating, a good passenger-side small-overlap frontal rating, and a good original moderate-overlap frontal rating for the 2024 Lexus TX. IIHS also lists standard blind-spot detection and standard lane-departure warning and prevention. IIHS notes that the TX was introduced for 2024 and that some TX ratings are assigned using related Toyota Grand Highlander testing. See the IIHS 2024 Lexus TX rating for the test details and qualifications.

Which should you buy: the 2024 Lexus GX or TX?
| If your priority is… | Choose… | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Technical off-road driving | GX | Ladder frame, standard full-time 4WD, Torsen center differential, and Overtrail equipment. |
| Serious towing | GX | Up to 9,096 pounds in the cited configuration versus 5,000 pounds for the TX. |

| Large family cargo loads | TX | Up to 97 cubic feet with both rear rows folded. |
| Fuel efficiency | TX | Hybrid and plug-in-hybrid choices, including a 33-mile estimated electric range for the TX 550h+. |
| Lower historical launch price | TX | $55,050 versus $64,250 for the GX at the 2024 launch. |
| Camping and adventure equipment | GX | More suitable towing and trail hardware, plus Lexus-described accessory categories such as recovery kits and rooftop-tent equipment. |
Choose the 2024 Lexus GX if the vehicle will tow a heavy trailer, reach difficult trails, carry adventure equipment, or serve as a luxury off-road platform. Choose the 2024 Lexus TX if the vehicle will primarily transport a family, use all three rows, carry luggage, travel on paved roads, or benefit from hybrid and plug-in-hybrid operation.
The most important qualification is trim selection. A seven-seat GX Premium or Luxury serves a different purpose from a five-seat GX Overtrail. A TX 350 FWD serves a different purpose from a 404-horsepower TX 550h+. Compare the exact trim, drivetrain, seating layout, tow equipment, and cargo needs rather than comparing only the model names.
