But the names are not a strict technical divide: racing sources sometimes call a downforce-producing airfoil a spoiler. To compare parts, look at their shape, position, and intended effect—not just the label.
How a spoiler and a wing differ

What these parts do to airflow
A spoiler manages flow around the body
A spoiler can change pressure distribution and airflow around a vehicle. An SAE paper from 1977 examined front underbody dams and rear deck lips—called spoilers in the paper—as aids for reducing automobile drag and lift. That describes a design goal, not a promise that every spoiler will reduce both on every car. SAE International, 1977 paper.

A wing is an airfoil acting in the airflow. On performance cars it is commonly configured to create downforce, pressing the tires more firmly against the road. More tire loading can support traction and cornering, but the wing also adds drag. Why a spoiler does not always mean downforce
Passenger-car aerodynamic aids can be designed to reduce drag or to reduce lift at the rear axle for high-speed stability; those aims can conflict. An SAE abstract discussing rear aerodynamic aids describes both objectives, so “spoiler” alone does not tell you which effect a part is designed to achieve. Active spoilers are a distinct case
Some production passenger vehicles use active rear spoilers that deploy at high speed when additional downforce is needed. SAE’s 2024 paper frames their design as a balance among downforce, drag, and styling. This is one type of spoiler system, not a feature of spoilers generally. How to compare a real spoiler or wing
Before judging a part by its name or appearance, check what it is designed to do and how it works with the specific vehicle.

- Intended effect: Is the design meant to manage body airflow, reduce drag or lift, or generate downforce?
- Position and construction: Is it a body-mounted lip or a distinct airfoil held in the airflow?
- Trade-off: If the aim is more downforce, what added drag comes with it?
- Vehicle interaction: Is the part designed for the car’s shape and setup, rather than judged in isolation?
- Operating conditions: What speeds and conditions is the design intended for? Aerodynamic effects depend on configuration and use.
A controlled SAE experiment comparing a rear wing and spoiler on a simplified 10% scale NASCAR model in a water tunnel found different flow behavior, including in forward and reverse travel. The abstract cautions that the wing’s lift-prevention behavior in reverse could be ineffective.
