No single Subaru Forester model year is the clear winner. For a used purchase, 2023 and 2024 are the best-supported starting points, 2022 is worth a close look as a value option, and 2019 and 2020 deserve extra scrutiny. The 2025 and 2026 models are a new generation, so their reliability figures are predictions rather than ownership records. A specific car’s condition, history, recall status and equipment will matter more than the model year.
How to read the year-by-year rankings
The main ranking of Forester years comes from ModelYears.com, which compares complaint filings made to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Its update is dated October 4, 2026. The comparison counts complaints filed during each model year’s first three years. It is a screening tool, and four limits matter for a buyer:
- NHTSA complaints are consumer reports, not confirmed defects or failure rates.
- The counts are not adjusted for sales volume. A popular year can collect more complaints simply because more of those cars were sold and driven.
- Reporting habits vary by owner and over time, so the counts are not a like-for-like failure measure.
- ModelYears.com presents the comparison as a way to decide what to check, not as a diagnosis of any particular vehicle.

2016: lower complaint count, but an older car
A 2016 Forester is on the lower-complaint list, which makes it a plausible budget option. At this age, though, wear, maintenance history and accident repairs weigh more heavily than the complaint ranking. Confirm which driver-assistance features the car has rather than assuming them from the year.
2019 and 2020: scrutinize listings more closely
Both years rank higher on first-three-years complaint counts, and cracked windshields are a highlighted part of that pattern. This does not mean a 2019 or 2020 Forester is a poor purchase. It means the seller should be able to show that the windshield is undamaged or that any replacement was done properly, and that the car merits a more thorough inspection than a lower-count year would need.

2022: a value candidate
2022 is on the lower-complaint list, so it is a reasonable choice when its asking price is more attractive than 2023 or 2024 with comparable condition. Consumer Reports reliability figures for 2022 are not stated in the sources behind this guide, so the case for 2022 rests on complaint data alone. That makes the individual inspection more important.
2023 and 2024: the best-supported starting points
2023 appears on the lower-complaint list, and 2024 has a positive Consumer Reports reliability summary. These are different kinds of evidence, and neither gives a score for the model year, so treat both as a shortlist rather than a verdict. The 2024 summary is brief and gives no score.

2025 and 2026: a new generation with no track record yet
The 2025 Forester is a redesign. Consumer Reports’ 2025 review, reprinted by Subaru of America, says: “The redesigned sixth-generation Forester continues with its core virtues of great outward visibility, a roomy cabin, a comfortable ride, excellent fuel economy, and standard all-wheel drive.” No individual reviewer is named. The same review says the engine can feel underpowered during harder acceleration, which is a driving observation rather than a reliability finding.
Because the redesign is new, owners have had little time to report problems, so the early predicted score should not be read as a track record. The 2026 score is from a later snapshot and a different cohort. The two figures should not be ranked against each other.

Checks to run on any specific Forester
- Get the VIN. It is printed on the driver’s-side dashboard, visible through the windshield, and on the driver’s door-jamb sticker. Every check below depends on it.
- Check open recalls by VIN. Use NHTSA’s recall lookup and Subaru’s owner recall information. Recall status can change after a listing is posted, and Consumer Reports’ recent model pages flag recall alerts for some newer years, so a year-level summary goes stale quickly. Ask the seller or dealer for documentation that any recall repair was completed.
- Review service records. Compare the records against the maintenance schedule in the owner’s manual. Gaps in regular service matter more on an older car than a summary of complaint counts does.
- Check history and body condition. Get a vehicle history report, look for signs of accident repair, and inspect the underbody for rust. An independent pre-purchase inspection is the most useful single step.
- Verify safety equipment by trim. Consumer Reports’ 2025 and 2026 reviews say blind-spot warning and rear cross-traffic warning are absent on Base trims, optional on Premium, and standard on higher trims. Confirm this on the window sticker (Monroney label) or by VIN, not from the model year alone.
- Compare price with condition. Set the asking price against mileage, trim, documented condition and comparable local listings.
Matching the year to your priorities
- Tight budget with strong records: 2016 or 2022. The 2016 needs the most condition scrutiny.
- Balanced used purchase: 2023 or 2024.
- Newest equipment, visibility and cabin space: 2025 or 2026, if you accept limited ownership history and an engine Consumer Reports found underpowered on hard acceleration.
- 2019 or 2020 at a lower price: workable only after the windshield, history and recall checks come back clean.
What these sources can and cannot settle
No source here ranks every Forester year on a single measure, and none names one best year. The complaint ranking is a secondary screen with a narrow method. Consumer Reports’ reliability figures are predictions tied to a specific publication date. Year-by-year recall totals are not given because a complete, current count was not verified, so check each VIN instead.
