Mercedes-Benz presents the update as a renewed claim to the top of the luxury-sedan market, but its announcements do not independently establish that the car has reclaimed a leadership position.
What Mercedes-Benz changed for 2027
The update is broad rather than a clean-sheet redesign. Mercedes-Benz calls it the most extensive update in Maybach S-Class history, and says the new model entered series production at Sindelfingen in April 2026. The U.S. model is slated to arrive later in 2026.
Outside, the Maybach gets a larger grille with an illuminated surround, an illuminated C-pillar emblem, twin-star headlamps with rose-gold accents and optional wheel designs in 20- and 21-inch sizes. Mercedes-Benz says the grille is 20 percent larger than before. A standing hood star is optional, rather than a universal feature.
Inside, the stated priorities are sound insulation, rear-seat comfort and digital technology. Mercedes-Benz describes enhanced noise and cabin insulation, and offers automatic comfort doors as an available feature. The MBUX Superscreen is standard on the U.S. overview page; it combines a 14.4-inch center display with two 12.3-inch displays. The system adds an AI-integrated MBUX Virtual Assistant, while fourth-generation MBUX is powered by MB.OS. Mercedes-Benz describes MB.OS integration in a Maybach model as a first.

For passengers in back, the S 580 page describes an executive rear seat that reclines up to 43 degrees and includes powered calf and foot rests. An optional rear refrigerated compartment and optional silver-plated Robbe & Berking champagne flutes underscore the focus on chauffeured travel. These are manufacturer-described features, not independent measurements of comfort or quietness.
What is standard, optional and customizable?
Mercedes-Benz USA’s July 7, 2026 quick reference guide highlights AIRMATIC air suspension with intelligent damper control, 10-degree rear-axle steering, next-generation DIGITAL LIGHT, and heated and ventilated power seats with massage among standard-feature highlights. It lists rear-axle steering at 4.5 degrees with optional 21-inch wheels. Confirm equipment by trim and package before ordering: a highlights list does not establish that every item is standard on both variants.

How the U.S. S 580 and S 680 compare
The July 7, 2026 Mercedes-Benz USA quick reference guide lists these specifications and MSRPs for the 2027 U.S. models. The prices are manufacturer-published U.S. figures from that date, not current or worldwide guarantees.

For the S 580, the guide lists 553 lb-ft of torque and a 3.9-second estimated 0–60 mph time. MBUSA’s current S 580 page instead lists 533 lb-ft and 4.3 seconds. Because the manufacturer’s own sources conflict, those figures should be verified for the exact vehicle and configuration rather than treated as settled specifications. The S 680 guide lists 664 lb-ft and estimates 0–60 mph in 4.3 seconds.
Which version fits which buyer?
The S 580 is the lower-priced entry and pairs a 4.0-liter V8 with mild-hybrid assistance. The S 680 costs more and centers on a handcrafted V12. Both have the same listed wheelbase and rear legroom, so the basic cabin dimensions do not distinguish them in the guide. Compare the actual equipment, options, intended use and local availability before deciding; the guide’s powertrain and price differences alone do not establish which will suit a particular buyer.

Does the 2027 Maybach reclaim the luxury throne?
That phrase is a positioning claim, not a result demonstrated by the available figures. Mercedes-Maybach chief Markus Bauer said the new car “once again underlines its leading position in the top-end segment.” That statement communicates the brand’s intent; it is not independent confirmation of a market ranking. The cited manufacturer material provides no independent sales, market-share, buyer-preference or rival-comparison evidence proving that the S-Class has reclaimed leadership.
What can be established is the nature of Mercedes-Benz’s case: distinctive Maybach design, promised cabin serenity, rear-seat amenities, updated software and displays, and substantial customization. Whether those changes make the car the segment leader depends on comparisons beyond the company’s own claims.

Prices and availability in the United States
Mercedes-Benz USA’s July 7, 2026 quick reference guide lists an MSRP of $210,200 for the S 580 and $247,450 for the S 680. The S 680 model page showed “Price Coming Soon” when accessed, so verify current pricing, options and inventory with a U.S. dealer before making a purchase decision. The manufacturer says the 2027 sedan will arrive later in 2026.
