How to transport diesel safely
Choose a container suitable for both the fuel and the applicable transport rules, close it securely, and prevent it from shifting during the journey. Do not assume that an ordinary can is acceptable or that one country’s quantity limit applies elsewhere. In Canada, the cited road-vehicle provision specifically requires visible marking and restraint against unintended movement; UK guidance specifies approved packaging for the work-related threshold described below.
- Identify the jurisdiction. Determine whether the journey is in Great Britain, Northern Ireland, Canada, or another country. The limits in this article apply only to the jurisdictions and circumstances named.
- Identify the purpose. Private or domestic carriage and work-related carriage can be subject to different conditions. Carrying fuel for your own immediate work may also differ from delivering it for someone else.
- Check the container and amount together. Confirm the required approval or standard, the capacity of each receptacle, and the total quantity allowed for the vehicle or transport unit.
- Secure the load and follow any marking requirements. Prevent containers from moving, and make required labels or placards visible where the applicable rule calls for them.
How much diesel can you carry?
There is no single worldwide limit. The figures below are conditional regulatory thresholds, not general permissions to carry that amount in any vehicle or container.

For Great Britain, the transport unit means a motor vehicle alone or a vehicle with an attached trailer. Do not apply the UK private-use figures to tanks, intermediate bulk containers (IBCs), or large packagings: the Department for Transport says those are not treated as packaged for retail sale under the cited provision. The UK page distinguishes diesel from petrol, whose thresholds differ.

Great Britain: private or domestic journeys
The Department for Transport describes an ADR condition under which provisions do not apply to qualifying carriage by private individuals. The goods must be packaged for retail sale, intended for personal or domestic use or leisure or sporting activities, and packed with measures to prevent leakage in normal conditions of carriage. For flammable liquids in refillable receptacles filled by or for a private individual, the stated ceiling is 60 litres per receptacle and 240 litres per transport unit. See the Department for Transport guidance for the full conditions.
Those conditions matter as much as the totals. The figures are not a blanket allowance for any private driver carrying any amount of diesel; the retail packaging, intended use, leakage prevention, and refillable-receptacle requirements all form part of the cited guidance.

Great Britain: work-related carriage
For work-related carriage, the Department for Transport assigns diesel UN1202 to Transport Category 3. Its guidance describes carrying up to 1,000 litres in UN-approved packages per transport unit without most requirements of the Carriage of Dangerous Goods Regulations 2009 (CDG 2009) and ADR applying. UN-approved jerricans and drums are examples of packaging given on the guidance page.
The page also lists a portable fire extinguisher with at least 2 kg dry-powder capacity, or equivalent, and basic driver training under ADR chapter 1.3. Above 1,000 litres, it says CDG 2009 and ADR apply in full. The guidance distinguishes carrying fuel for your own immediate work from delivering it for someone else, so establish which situation applies rather than treating every work journey alike.

This is Great Britain guidance, not a substitute for checking current law and the details of the journey. The cited page was last updated on 6 April 2020 and notes that ADR is updated every two years. Northern Ireland has similar but separate legislation; check the rules applicable there before travelling.

Transport Canada’s containment guidance points to standards for selecting and using containers; it does not amend or create deviations from the Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG) Regulations. For smaller containment such as drums and jerricans, the guidance lists TP 14850. It also identifies options for larger quantities, including UN-standardized IBCs, portable tanks, and highway tanks under specified standards. Check the Transport Canada road containment guidance for the applicable standard and container type; it was modified on 23 September 2026.

Section 1.35 of Canada’s TDG Regulations sets a conditional provision for road transport of UN1202 diesel or UN1203 gasoline. It states that specified parts and requirements do not apply if each containment means has at least one label or placard visible from outside the vehicle, each is secured to prevent unintended movement, and total capacity does not exceed 2,000 L. This is not a blanket exemption from every dangerous-goods requirement. The Justice Canada regulation page was current to 3 September 2026 and last amended 1 July 2026.
What container should you use?
Use a container that meets the standard applicable to your location, quantity, and purpose; there is no one container rule established here for every diesel journey. For the Great Britain work-related threshold described above, the guidance names UN-approved jerricans or drums. In Canada, Transport Canada points to TP 14850 for drums and jerricans and identifies other standards and containment types for larger capacities.
