What You Didn’t Know About the Cars in Fast & Furious: Tokyo Drift

Tokyo Drift’s cars were sourced, styled, and modified for production: Japanese-market imports helped sell the setting, while multiple stunt cars meant Sean’s RB26 Mustang was only one of six fastbacks.

The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift’s cars were production-built tools as much as movie stars. The crew assembled more than 200 vehicles, brought Japanese-market cars to Southern California to help sell the Tokyo setting, and made multiple versions of key cars for stunts. Most notably, the film’s Nissan-engine Mustang was one of six 1967 fastbacks—not the configuration of every Mustang used.

Why so many of the cars came from Japan

Although the story takes place in Tokyo, much of the 2006 film—and virtually all of its action—was shot in Southern California. Japanese-market cars helped make those locations feel more like Japan. Picture-car coordinator Dennis McCarthy told Edmunds, “We had to go to Japan, buy the cars and bring them back.”

The reported imports included Nissan 350Zs, Mazda RX-7s and RX-8s, Toyota Chasers, Nissan Silvias, and Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IXs. McCarthy said the production had more than 200 cars in total, sourced from different places; that figure covers the movie’s broader fleet, not just its featured imports.

Featured cars and reported production counts

Car Reported production detail
Nissan 350Z Edmunds reported 11 cars, including three bought locally for crash scenes.
Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IX Edmunds reported 10 contributed to the project; the cars were converted to rear-wheel drive for drift work.
Mazda RX-7 and RX-8, Toyota Chaser, Nissan Silvia Japanese-market examples were among the vehicles reported by Edmunds; a total count for each is not stated.

These are historical production figures reported in 2006, not a current inventory of surviving cars or a complete count of every background vehicle.

The cars were selected and built for the film

The production did not simply choose finished cars off a lot. McCarthy described a selection process with director Justin Lin in which several candidates were considered for each character. The Nissan 350Z for D.K. was an early decision, and a VeilSide-converted example helped establish the design direction. The team then fabricated vehicles in a Glendale warehouse.

That distinction matters: the cars viewers recognize were shaped by character design and filming needs. Their appearance could be based on a particular real-world vehicle or conversion, while the actual production cars were prepared as working assets.

Han’s car: the orange Mazda RX-7

Han drives a Mazda RX-7 with VeilSide styling in Tokyo Drift. Takara Tomy’s film-specific Tomica Premium Unlimited 01 miniature identifies its subject as the Mazda RX-7 VeilSide car driven by Han and says the model reproduces its customized body and wheels.

Takara Tomy announced the miniature for Japan on November 20, 2021, with a suggested retail price of ¥1,320 including tax at launch. Those are historical Japanese release terms, not a statement of present-day price or stock. The manufacturer lists dimensions of 33.8 × 21.3 × 73.4 mm. Sean’s Mustang: an RB26 story car, but not every Mustang

The finale’s 1967 Ford Mustang fastback has a famous engine-swap story: the film’s Mustang is fitted with a Nissan Skyline GT-R RB26DETT, a turbocharged 2.6-liter inline-six. The production reporting, however, describes a fleet of six Mustang fastbacks for the showdown. Edmunds reported that five had V8s and one used the RB26DETT for the story. It is inaccurate to assume every Mustang used during filming had the same engine.

Multiple copies let the crew handle stunt work and shoot with separate units. The cars could differ mechanically while serving the same on-screen identity. Paul Tan also reported in 2006 that six Mustang fastbacks were involved and that the car budget was $7 million; that is period reporting, not an audited production figure.

What one surviving RB26 Mustang could do

Hot Rod later tested one surviving modified RB26 Mustang. In that specific test, it recorded 340 horsepower at the rear wheels, a 0–60 mph time of 5.38 seconds, and a quarter-mile run of 13.36 seconds at 109.83 mph. These are results for the tested car, not specifications for every Mustang in the film or a guaranteed measure of the fictional car’s performance.

Some cars had real drift-oriented modifications

The production made mechanical changes to help certain vehicles perform. Edmunds reported that two 350Zs received APS twin-turbo systems, producing around 475 horsepower, as well as Nismo limited-slip differentials. The Evos were converted from all-wheel drive to rear-wheel drive. The crew also iterated on Mustang engines during stunt preparation.

What the production details tell you

  • More than 200 cars were reported by picture-car coordinator Dennis McCarthy, reflecting the scale of the production fleet rather than a list of only the stars.
  • Japanese-market vehicles helped create the setting while Southern California stood in for much of Tokyo.
  • Multiple copies and varied builds were practical necessities for crashes, stunts, continuity, and simultaneous filming—not evidence that one car did every job.
