XPeng’s Land Aircraft Carrier did make a public flight, but its often-quoted “621-mile range” is not the flying car’s flight range. The figure is a rounded conversion of XPeng’s claim that the six-wheel ground module has a combined CLTC range exceeding 1,000 km (about 621 miles). The system carries a detachable two-seat electric aircraft, which XPeng reported flying publicly at Airshow China in Zhuhai on November 12, 2024.
What flew, and when?
XPeng reported the Land Aircraft Carrier’s first global public flight at Airshow China in Zhuhai, Guangdong, on November 12, 2024. The presentation included automated flight manoeuvres and a demonstration in which the aircraft separated from, and later reconnected with, its road vehicle.

XPeng had also reported a flight at a Guangzhou preview in September 2024. The November event is the company’s specifically described global public-flight milestone. Both are company reports of demonstrations, not independent flight testing or evidence that commercial passenger operations had begun.
What the Land Aircraft Carrier actually is
The product is a modular two-part system rather than one vehicle that drives and flies in the same configuration. A six-wheel “mothership” transports, stores and recharges a detachable electric aircraft.

Ground module
- Six wheels arranged across three axles.
- Approximately 5.5 metres long, 2 metres wide and 2 metres high, according to XPeng’s September 2024 announcement.
- Space for four occupants.
- An onboard mechanism that XPeng says automates aircraft release and storage.
- An 800-volt silicon-carbide range-extender platform that supplies road energy and serves as the aircraft’s energy platform.
Air module
- A detachable, two-seat electric vertical-takeoff-and-landing aircraft.
- Six rotors arranged with dual ducts.
- Carbon-fibre structure and propellers, according to XPeng’s product description.
- A two-seat cockpit and flight-control systems separate from the road vehicle.
The aircraft must be separated from the carrier before flight and returned for transport and charging afterward. That architecture is why road range, aircraft flight capability and aviation certification must be assessed separately.
What “621 miles” means
XPeng’s 2025 product overview calls the ground module’s claimed figure a “combined CLTC range exceeding 1,000 km,” which converts to approximately 621 miles. It is a manufacturer claim measured under China’s CLTC testing framework, not a demonstrated real-world road distance and not an aircraft range.
| Figure or milestone | What it refers to | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| More than 1,000 km (about 621 miles) | Combined range of the ground module | XPeng claim; CLTC figure in the 2025 product overview |
| Up to six flights | Flights supportable from a full fuel-and-charge state of the carrier | XPeng claim; flight duration, distance and conditions are not stated |
| Aircraft flight range | Distance the air module can fly on its own | Not established by the cited material |
“Combined” indicates the carrier’s range-extender, battery and fuel-energy system in road use. It does not mean the aircraft can fly 621 miles, nor that six long-distance flights are guaranteed. XPeng has not supplied, in the cited material, a validated aircraft range, endurance figure or independent test result.
Public demonstration versus a production aircraft
A public flight shows that XPeng demonstrated controlled operation; it does not by itself establish regulatory approval, unrestricted passenger service or customer delivery. The company’s later announcements describe a development and certification process with targets rather than completed commercialization.
Certification and production timeline
| Date | XPeng-reported development | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| November 12, 2024 | Global public flight at Airshow China, including automated manoeuvres and separation/reconnection | Commercial service, independent validation or passenger operations |
| January 2025 | Flying module type-certificate application accepted; more than 3,000 advance orders reported; delivery planned for 2026 | Type certification issued or deliveries started |
| May 2025 | Production-certificate application accepted; type-certificate review described as being in compliance confirmation; 2026 mass production and delivery target retained | Either certificate had been granted |
| November 2025 | More than 7,000 global orders reported; trial production began November 3; planned annual capacity of 10,000 units, initially 5,000 | Confirmed customer deliveries or achieved factory output |
| September 27, 2026 status in the cited material | Official product page still displayed a 2026 mass-production-and-delivery timeline | Final certification, current price, order terms or actual deliveries |
Orders and factory-capacity plans are company-reported commercial indicators. They should not be read as delivered vehicles or as proof that the aircraft is approved for operation.

How XPeng positions the system
XPeng’s stated early positioning includes limited-context experiences, flight camps and public-service scenarios. The company describes urban air transport as a longer-term direction rather than an established service. That distinction matters: an experience flight in a controlled setting has different operating, insurance and pilot requirements from routine urban commuting.
The cited announcements discuss Chinese certification processes. Licensing, registration, pilot requirements, airspace access, insurance and operating rules would need separate approval in every other jurisdiction; Chinese milestones cannot be generalized automatically to the United States, Europe or elsewhere.
What is still unknown
- The aircraft’s independently verified range, endurance, payload and cruise performance.
- Whether Chinese type and production certificates were ultimately issued by September 27, 2026.
- Whether customer deliveries had begun by that date.
- A current retail price, deposit structure and final delivery terms.
- The operational limits, pilot qualifications and jurisdiction-specific permissions for private owners.
Until those details are published by XPeng or the relevant aviation authorities, the Land Aircraft Carrier is best understood as a demonstrated modular prototype moving toward planned production, not as a proven 621-mile flying vehicle.
The practical takeaway
The headline is accurate only with the right subject attached: XPeng reported a public flight of its detachable aircraft, while the approximately 621-mile number describes the carrier’s claimed combined road range. The two modules have different jobs, performance limits and certification paths. XPeng’s 2025 milestones—applications, reported orders and trial production—show progress toward a planned 2026 launch, but the cited information does not confirm final approval, a retail price or customer deliveries as of September 27, 2026.
