What was reported in Vovchansk
Euromaidan Press reported on 3 August 2024 that footage published on 28 July showed a remotely operated ground drone carrying a device weighing more than 200 kilograms toward Russian positions at the Aggregate Plant in Vovchansk, Kharkiv Oblast. The outlet said the device detonated near a building, causing damage and a subsequent fire. Those details are attributed to the reporting and footage; they are not independently verified here. In a follow-up published on 13 August, Euromaidan Press said it contacted the Khorne Group, which it identified as a drone-strike unit in Ukraine’s 116th Mechanized Brigade. The outlet reported that the group confirmed it had used a Toyota Mirai hydrogen tank. The follow-up said the group attributed its materials to volunteer donations. A spokesperson was quoted as saying, “We used what volunteers donated to us.” The same report said the spokesperson described drone manufacturers’ use of salvaged EV batteries as having been underway for more than 18 months. Why “hydrogen bomb” is misleading
Some headlines and search queries call the device a “hydrogen bomb.” That phrase has a precise meaning: a thermonuclear nuclear weapon. The reports describe a conventional improvised explosive device, not a nuclear weapon. The available reporting also does not establish that hydrogen itself caused the reported blast or fire.

Interesting Engineering published energy-equivalence calculations and described the tank as contributing a TNT-equivalent yield. Those claims are not corroborated by Toyota’s specifications or primary documentation of the incident, so they should not be treated as established facts. What Toyota says about the Mirai’s hydrogen system
The Toyota Mirai is a fuel-cell electric vehicle. It stores compressed hydrogen in tanks; a fuel-cell system uses that hydrogen to produce electricity for the electric drivetrain. The 2024 brochure figures are for the U.S. model and should not be generalized to every Mirai model year or market. Toyota’s general description is about the second-generation vehicle, not evidence of the exact tank used in the reported incident.

What Toyota’s safety guidance says—and does not say
Toyota’s owner’s manual describes the tanks as high-pressure compressed-hydrogen storage containers. It warns owners not to alter or disassemble hydrogen-system parts and says the tank valves automatically close when the collision sensor detects a collision. Toyota Mirai owner’s manual
Those instructions underscore that these are safety-critical, high-pressure vehicle components, not parts for consumer experimentation or repurposing. They do not prove that an ordinary Mirai is inherently explosive, nor do they verify how a tank was handled or used in the reported battlefield incident.

What the incident may signal
Euromaidan Press quoted Trent Telenko, whom it identified as a retired U.S. Department of Defense civil servant, warning: “The implications of the Toyota hydrogen tank vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (VBIED) are straightforward – expect bigger car bombs.” That is an attributed expert warning, not an official military assessment, a Toyota statement, or a verified prediction. The defensible takeaway is narrower: the Khorne Group’s reported confirmation points to battlefield reuse of a salvaged automotive component, while the available evidence does not support confident claims about the device’s engineering or the hydrogen’s effect.
