During a TechCrunch Disrupt interview on October 27, 2025, Mawakana argued that autonomous vehicles may eventually be involved in a fatal crash even if they are substantially safer than human drivers overall. She also tied public acceptance to a high safety standard, transparent reporting, and corporate accountability.

The headline is based on a real exchange—but compresses the context
Asked whether society would accept a death caused by a robotaxi if autonomous vehicles were much safer than human drivers, Mawakana answered: I think that society will.

She also said Waymo thinks about a fatal incident in terms of when
, rather than whether
, and that the company plans for that possibility. In the fuller exchange, however, she was not saying Waymo welcomes a death or should be exempt from scrutiny. Her argument was about comparative risk: an imperfect autonomous system could still reduce the far larger number of deaths caused by human driving.

The phrase “one of its cars to kill someone” is therefore a sharpened headline paraphrase. The underlying remarks were real, but the meaning was conditional: society might tolerate a rare fatal crash only if the technology demonstrably improves overall safety and the companies operating it are transparent and accountable.
Why “safer” does not mean “perfect”
Robotaxis operate in a complicated shared environment. They encounter human drivers, pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists, emergency vehicles, road debris, construction zones, poor weather, confusing signs, and rapidly changing human behavior.
A vehicle can have a lower crash rate than a human-driven car and still eventually be involved in a fatal collision if it travels enough miles. That is a probability argument, not a precise prediction of when a Waymo vehicle will cause a death or evidence that such a crash is unavoidable.

A human driver’s error is usually treated as an individual event. A software or sensor failure may raise a different concern: one defect could potentially affect an entire fleet, although a successful fix could also improve every vehicle at once.
What Waymo’s safety numbers actually say
Waymo and coverage of the interview have cited several different safety comparisons:

| Figure | What it represents | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| 91% fewer crashes | A figure reported in Futurism’s coverage of a Waymo comparison. | It should not be assumed to use the same period or definition as Waymo’s other claims. |
| Five times safer overall | Waymo’s reported comparison with human drivers, as described by TechCrunch. | This is a company-reported result, not an independently settled universal measure. |
| 12 times safer for pedestrians | Another Waymo-reported comparison cited by TechCrunch. | The relevant operating conditions, period, exposure, and outcome definition matter. |
| 56.7 million rider-only miles | A 2025 academic preprint analyzing Waymo operations. | The analysis reported substantial reductions in certain crash outcomes, including a 96% reduction in any-injury-reported intersection crashes. |
These figures are not interchangeable. “Crash,” “injury crash,” and “pedestrian outcome” can use different thresholds and data sources. Comparisons may also differ by city, time period, mileage, human-driver benchmark, road type, weather, and whether the analysis controls for exposure.
The defensible wording is “Waymo reports” for the company’s figures and “a study found” for the preprint—not “Waymo is five times safer” as an unconditional fact.

Strong performance over tens of millions of miles is meaningful, but it does not automatically establish that the same safety advantage will hold during rapid expansion. A fleet may operate initially in carefully selected areas, under defined weather and mapping conditions, before entering cities with different roads, traffic patterns, construction practices, and regulations.
A complete evaluation would examine:
- Fatalities and serious injuries per mile and per trip;
- Pedestrian, cyclist, and motorcycle outcomes;
- Emergency-vehicle and school-bus interactions;
- Unprotected turns, intersections, and construction zones;
- Minor crashes, near misses, and vehicle damage;
- Remote-assistance frequency and response time;
- Whether incidents are reported consistently across companies; and
- How performance changes as the fleet expands geographically and operationally.
Aggregate averages are important, but unusual failures can shape public trust more powerfully than a favorable spreadsheet. A vehicle that behaves inexplicably near a school bus or emergency scene can make people question whether the system understands situations that matter most.
Incidents that test Waymo’s safety narrative
TechCrunch reported that a Waymo vehicle in Atlanta pulled out in front of a stopped school bus, prompting attention from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Other coverage has described Waymo vehicles blocking emergency vehicles and exhibiting unusual behavior on public roads.

Those incidents do not, by themselves, prove that Waymo is less safe than human drivers. They do show why public acceptance depends on more than a claim about average crash rates. A rare event can expose a systemic weakness, reveal an operating limitation, or represent an isolated failure that the company can correct. Determining which requires detailed logs, independent investigation, and disclosure.

What remote assistance does—and does not—mean
Waymo vehicles operate without an onboard human driver, but autonomous fleets can use remote personnel to provide assistance in difficult situations. “Remote assistance” should not automatically be described as a person remotely driving the car. The exact role may involve advice, approving a maneuver, or another form of intervention.
Important unanswered questions include how often assistance is requested, how quickly personnel can respond, what happens when communications fail, and whether intervention rates are publicly reported. Those details affect how readers should interpret the phrase “fully autonomous” and how safety comparisons should be designed.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Transparency is part of the safety claim
Mawakana said companies should publish crash data and remain accountable even though perfection is impossible. Meaningful transparency would go beyond selected headline statistics. It could include:
- Total driverless miles and trips;
- Crash counts by severity and road user;
- Injury and fatality outcomes;
- Police- and insurance-reported incidents;
- Vehicle-at-fault assessments, with methodology disclosed;
- Near misses and remote interventions;
- Operating-domain and weather limitations;
- Changes made after crashes; and
- Access for regulators and independent researchers to relevant methods and records.
Publishing favorable averages is not the same as making a serious incident independently investigable. The public is more likely to accept nonzero risk when it can see what happened, who was responsible, what compensation is available, and how recurrence will be prevented.

The harder question is who is accountable
A fatal robotaxi crash would raise questions that ordinary traffic cases often answer more simply. Potentially relevant parties could include the vehicle manufacturer, fleet operator, software supplier, maintenance provider, mapping contractor, insurer, and—depending on the facts and local law—remote-support personnel or other organizations.
Which party is legally liable varies by jurisdiction and by the details of the crash. Investigators would likely need vehicle sensor records, software versions, maintenance histories, mapping data, remote-support logs, and communications records. State laws also differ on who counts as the responsible “driver,” what insurance applies, and when civil or criminal liability may attach.
That legal uncertainty is not a minor technicality. If companies ask the public to accept a statistical safety bargain, they also need a credible process for investigating failures, compensating victims, preserving evidence, and deciding whether operations should pause.
Would society really accept a robotaxi death?
There are at least three separate questions:
- Would people accept fewer total deaths? Many transportation policies already rely on risk reduction rather than perfection.
- Would people accept a particular company’s fatality? That depends on the circumstances, the company’s record, and whether it appears to have acted responsibly.
- Would people accept it if the company concealed failures or expanded recklessly? Public tolerance would likely be much lower.
A single death may trigger intense backlash even if the fleet’s long-term record remains better than that of human drivers. The political response may depend less on the average than on whether the event appears foreseeable, preventable, hidden, or impossible to explain.
Nor is robotaxis the only path to fewer road deaths. Safer street design, lower speeds, enforcement, public transit, protected cycling and walking infrastructure, and driver-assistance systems can also reduce risk. The policy choice is not simply “human drivers or robotaxis.”
What Mawakana’s statement means
Mawakana’s comments are best understood as an argument for comparative-risk reasoning. She was acknowledging that a deployed autonomous system can encounter situations it fails to handle, while claiming that the overall result may still be safer than human driving.
That argument does not grant Waymo immunity from scrutiny. The relevant test is not whether the company can promise zero risk. It is whether its safety advantage is credible across clearly defined conditions, whether it discloses failures honestly, whether independent parties can examine the evidence, and whether victims have a clear route to compensation and accountability.
