A Mercedes-Benz employee reportedly exposed a GitHub access token in a publicly accessible repository, potentially giving broad access to the automaker’s GitHub Enterprise environment. The token was reportedly exposed from late September 2023 until Mercedes revoked it on January 24, 2024.
The incident shows a serious credential-security failure, but public reporting does not establish that all accessible source code was downloaded, modified, or published. It also does not prove that customer records, vehicle systems, or manufacturing networks were accessed.

What happened
According to SecurityWeek, a Mercedes-Benz employee placed a GitHub token in a repository that was publicly accessible. SecurityWeek reported that the token provided unrestricted access to Mercedes-Benz’s GitHub Enterprise server.

SecurityWeek published its report on January 31, 2024.

The available reporting does not establish why the repository was public or whether it was a test repository, mirror, or intentionally public project. It also does not identify the employee, token, or repository, and those details should not be used to attempt access.
Timeline
- Late September 2023: The reported exposure began.
- Mid-January 2024: The leak was reportedly discovered.
- January 24, 2024: Mercedes reportedly revoked the token.
- January 31, 2024: SecurityWeek reported the incident.
- February 2, 2024: SANS NewsBites summarized it.
This represents roughly four months between the reported beginning of the exposure and revocation, although the evidence does not prove the token was continuously usable for every moment of that period.
What the token could have exposed
SecurityWeek characterized the token as providing unrestricted access to Mercedes-Benz’s GitHub Enterprise server. That is a reported permission-scope claim, not independent proof that every repository was accessed.

If valid and usable, a broadly privileged token could potentially allow an unauthorized party to clone repositories, read private source code, inspect issues and pull requests, create or modify content, alter workflows, or access repository-stored credentials. SANS listed possible exposed material including:
- proprietary source code;
- API keys and other credentials;
- database connection strings;
- design documents or blueprints; and
- build, deployment, and internal API configuration.
The actual impact would depend on the token type, scopes, owning account or application, repository permissions, GitHub Enterprise configuration, single sign-on, network restrictions, and whether the credential allowed read, write, workflow, or administrative actions.
Was Mercedes source code stolen?
Public reporting confirms the risk of unauthorized access, not the complete chain of compromise. It does not establish that an attacker:

The most accurate description is that Mercedes-Benz source code was potentially exposed through a leaked GitHub token. A token leak should nevertheless be treated as a credential compromise, because an organization may not be able to prove that nobody used it during its validity period.

What this incident does—and does not—prove
A public repository containing a token is not necessarily a repository containing Mercedes’ source code. The token may have been exposed in a small public project while granting access to separate private repositories.
Conversely, access to a GitHub Enterprise environment does not automatically mean access to vehicle ECUs, connected cars, production systems, or manufacturing networks. Those systems require separate connectivity and permissions, and no such access is established by the available reporting.

Nor does the incident by itself establish a confirmed customer-data breach or a supply-chain attack. Those conclusions would require forensic evidence or a statement from Mercedes, a regulator, or another authoritative source.
Why deleting the token is not enough
Removing a secret from the latest file does not remove every copy. Git credentials can remain recoverable in prior commits, branches, tags, pull-request references, forks, build artifacts, logs, caches, or clones held by other users.

Revocation stops future authentication with that credential; it does not prove that earlier use did not occur, remove existing copies, undo malicious commits, or rotate other credentials exposed alongside it.

1. Contain the credential immediately
- Revoke the token. GitHub says revoked or expired tokens cannot be restored; create a replacement only if access is still required. See GitHub’s token-revocation guidance.
- Suspend the associated user, application, or service account if compromise is suspected.
- Rotate every secret that was stored with, reachable through, or trusted by the repository.
- Preserve GitHub audit logs, CI/CD logs, cloud logs, endpoint telemetry, and relevant repository metadata.
- Restrict repository visibility where appropriate without destroying evidence.
2. Determine what the credential could do
- Identify the token type, owner, expiration status, and scopes.
- List all repositories and organizations accessible to it.
- Check for clones, API calls, pushes, branch creation, pull requests, workflow changes, and unusual authentication.
- Investigate connected cloud, package, artifact, deployment, database, and signing systems.
3. Eradicate and recover
- Rewrite Git history where appropriate, but only after revoking the credential.
- Rotate database passwords, API keys, cloud credentials, signing keys, and CI/CD secrets.
- Review recent commits and workflow changes for tampering.
- Rebuild releases if source or build integrity cannot be established.
- Enable branch protection and mandatory review for sensitive repositories.
How developers can prevent a repeat
Do not store credentials in source files, temporary repositories, test projects, issues, logs, or build artifacts. Use short-lived, narrowly scoped credentials and prefer GitHub Apps, fine-grained tokens, or workload-based authentication where they fit the environment.
Use layered controls:
- secret scanning across current files and full Git history;
- push protection to block recognized secrets before they enter a repository;
- pre-commit and CI checks for developers and automation;
- centralized secrets management rather than hard-coded credentials;
- token expiration and least-privilege permissions; and
- continuous audit-log monitoring and alerting.
GitHub secret scanning can identify recognized secrets, and push protection can help prevent supported secrets from being pushed. These features are not universal detection: coverage depends on the credential type, repository location, configuration, and whether the secret appears in a recognizable format. Scanning can also miss encoded, custom-format, deleted, generated, or third-party credentials.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Organizations may use tools such as TruffleHog or Gitleaks for historical and CI scanning, while managed platforms such as GitHub Advanced Security or GitGuardian can provide broader governance and remediation workflows. A secrets manager such as HashiCorp Vault, AWS Secrets Manager, Google Secret Manager, or Azure Key Vault reduces the need to put long-lived credentials in repositories, but does not replace least privilege, rotation, or logging.
Bottom line
The Mercedes-Benz incident was a potentially enterprise-scale exposure caused by a publicly leaked, reportedly overprivileged GitHub credential. The evidence supports the possibility that source code and other sensitive repository material could be accessed. It does not, on its own, prove that all Mercedes source code was stolen or that vehicle and customer systems were compromised.
