The bright green liquid seen flowing from a storm drain at Tesla’s Palo Alto engineering headquarters on October 17, 2024, was described in reporting as a nonhazardous mixture of borax, lye and green dye. It was reportedly used in an industrial chiller system for Tesla’s Artificial Intelligence Supercomputer—not identified as automotive coolant. The amount recovered was reported as approximately 550 gallons, while the environmental impact remained unknown.

What happened at Tesla’s Palo Alto headquarters?

On October 17, 2024, local resident Mike Hedblom recorded gallons of lime-green liquid flowing from a storm drain near Tesla’s engineering headquarters in Palo Alto, California. Futurism reported that Tesla employees came outside with absorbent pads and that one worker initially told Hedblom the liquid was coolant. Hedblom later described his reaction to SFGate: “At that point, I didn’t know what it was. But I didn’t think it was right.”

The official description relayed in the report identified the liquid as a nonhazardous mixture of borax, lye and green dye. Its vivid color was a visual description, not an indication that the substance was automotive coolant.

What was the green mixture used for?

Futurism reported that a Governor’s Office of Emergency Services account described the mixture as “used for the chiller system to cool the Tesla Artificial Intelligence Supercomputer.” According to the same account, the incident occurred while Tesla personnel were draining that system. The reporting does not identify the mixture as coolant for Tesla vehicles.

How much was recovered, and where did it go?

The Palo Alto Fire Department recovered approximately 550 gallons from the storm drain, according to the state account as quoted by Futurism. That is the reported quantity recovered from this incident, not an estimate of the total amount released.

The account also said a separate natural watershed flow upstream carried liquid farther downstream, requiring additional cleanup. The report did not establish how much material traveled downstream.

Was Matadero Creek or the environment affected?

The exact environmental impact, including any effect on nearby Matadero Creek, was unknown in the report. Describing the mixture as nonhazardous does not establish that there was no environmental effect; the account did not report a measured impact or a final environmental assessment.
