The “last true Corvette” is enthusiast shorthand for the C7’s front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout and available manual transmission—not an official definition of what makes a Corvette. The C7 spans model years 2014–2019, and choosing one means comparing four very different lines: Stingray, Grand Sport, Z06 and ZR1. Before buying, identify the exact configuration, verify options and records, inspect the tires for your climate, and check recall status by VIN.
What enthusiasts mean by “the last true Corvette”
Some fans use “last true Corvette” for the seventh-generation car’s traditional front-engine layout, rear-wheel drive and availability with a manual transmission. CorvetteForum presents that as a view held by many enthusiasts, not an objective engineering category. Buyers who prefer the C8’s different layout and performance can reasonably see the change as progress rather than a loss. The useful question is whether the C7’s layout, proportions and cockpit suit the way you want to drive.
The C7 covers model years 2014–2019. CorvetteForum’s C7 buyer’s guide groups the range into four main model lines:
| Model line | Engine listed by CorvetteForum | Transmission summary | What to compare |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stingray | Naturally aspirated 6.2-liter LT1 V8 | Seven-speed manual; six-speed automatic, with an eight-speed automatic from 2015 according to the guide | Entry price, coupe or convertible, Z51 package and comfort equipment |
| Grand Sport | Naturally aspirated 6.2-liter LT1 V8 | Seven-speed manual; automatic availability varies by year | Wide-body configuration and performance equipment versus Stingray |
| Z06 | Supercharged 6.2-liter LT4 V8 | Seven-speed manual or eight-speed automatic | Higher-performance specification, options such as Z07, and use history |
| ZR1 | Supercharged 6.2-liter LT5 V8; the guide lists it for 2019 | Seven-speed manual or eight-speed automatic | Top C7 performance line, ZTK availability and price premium |
This is a guide-level overview, not a substitute for checking the particular car’s model year, factory equipment and records. Transmission availability and package details can vary; confirm them for the VIN and the car itself.

How to choose among Stingray, Grand Sport, Z06 and ZR1
Stingray: the entry point to the C7
The Stingray pairs the naturally aspirated LT1 V8 with the broadest entry point into the generation. Compare coupe and convertible examples, transmission, comfort equipment and whether a claimed Z51 package is documented. A Z51 car has performance upgrades, so do not assume two Stingrays with similar appearance have the same specification.
Grand Sport: a distinct step up from Stingray
The Grand Sport retains the naturally aspirated LT1 but is a wide-body model line with performance equipment. Compare its actual equipment and condition with a Stingray rather than treating the name alone as proof of a particular option set.

Z06: supercharged power and option-specific differences
The Z06 uses a supercharged LT4. The Z07 package is a notable configuration to verify: CorvetteForum lists Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires and carbon-ceramic brakes among its equipment. Those details affect both what the car is and what condition checks deserve attention.
ZR1: the rarefied end of the C7 range
The 2019 ZR1 is listed with the supercharged LT5 and was available with a seven-speed manual or eight-speed automatic. The ZTK package adds track-oriented tires, suspension and aerodynamic equipment, according to the guide. Confirm the package through records or original equipment documentation rather than appearance.

Which options are worth verifying?
Packages can change the car’s equipment substantially, and appearance alone is not reliable proof. CorvetteForum’s guide identifies these options and features:
- Z51: A performance package described as including larger wheels and tires, larger brakes, performance exhaust, dry-sump lubrication and transmission cooling. Confirm package content for the model year.
- Performance Data Recorder: Records driving parameters with video. Verify the equipment on the specific car.
- Z07: A Z06 package. The guide lists Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires and carbon-ceramic brakes among its equipment.
- ZTK: A ZR1 package with track-oriented tires, suspension and aerodynamic equipment.
Ask for the vehicle’s records or original equipment documentation to verify a claimed package. Factory configuration matters more than badges or aftermarket parts.

How much should a C7 cost?
CorvetteForum’s November 2024 guide reported the following asking-price estimates for accident-free, clear-title cars with average mileage. These are dated estimates, not current offers or completed-sale values.
| Model line and body style | Guide-reported asking range (November 2024) |
|---|---|
| Stingray coupe | $35,000–$45,000 |
| Stingray convertible | $40,000–$50,000 |
| Grand Sport coupe | $55,000–$60,000 |
| Grand Sport convertible | $60,000–$65,000 |
| Z06 coupe | $55,000–$75,000 |

| ZR1 coupe | $150,000–$225,000 |
| ZR1 convertible | $150,000–$200,000 |
Use those figures only as historical guide estimates. The available figures do not establish today’s market value or a current like-for-like comparison of insurance and long-term running costs. For an individual listing, compare the same model line and body style, verified options, mileage, location, condition, title and maintenance history.

What to check before buying a specific car
Check recall status by VIN
- Enter the car’s VIN in NHTSA’s recall lookup.
- Ask the seller for documentation showing whether any required recall repairs were completed.
- Compare the lookup result and paperwork for that vehicle; a model-year notice alone does not show whether a particular car was affected or repaired.
For example, GM’s notice concerning certain 2014 Corvettes described a rear shock absorber weld issue. It does not establish that every 2014 car was affected or that any individual repair is complete. See the NHTSA-hosted recall notice and verify the VIN.
Inspect tires and account for the climate
Check tire size and fitment, tread, age, cracking and other damage, then consider whether the tires suit where the car will be driven. GM’s October 2024 bulletin for 2014–2019 Corvette, Z06, Grand Sport and ZR1 models fitted with high-performance summer-only tires warns that traction is reduced below approximately 40°F (5°C). GM recommends winter tires for driving below that temperature. It also advises avoiding driving, moving or test-driving an equipped car below 20°F (−7°C), when operation may damage the tires. Read the October 2024 General Motors bulletin for its stated scope and guidance.
Request records and arrange an inspection
- Review service and title records, and check that the documented equipment matches the seller’s claims.
- Have a qualified technician inspect the individual car. The available cited material does not establish its condition, accident history, maintenance quality or genuine package content.
- Give extra attention to configuration-specific items such as tires and brakes, especially when a car has performance packages.
The sources cited here do not establish a complete C7 reliability ranking or a definitive list of recurring faults by model year. A vehicle-specific inspection and records are more useful than treating anecdotes as universal defects.
A practical way to compare C7 listings
Before comparing asking prices, record the details that change what a car is and what it needs:
Quick Recap
- Model year and model line
- Engine, transmission and coupe or convertible body style
- Factory options verified by records
- Mileage, title and service history
- Tire and brake condition, including suitability for the local climate
- Recall lookup result and repair documentation
- Asking price compared with similar cars, with the date and condition of the comparison in mind
