Before taking a high-mileage Subaru wagon into the desert, check its records against the maintenance schedule for its exact model year, engine and trim, then inspect tires, brakes, cooling, steering, suspension and driveline condition. Suitability depends on the route: a wagon ready for paved touring is not necessarily equipped for deep sand, rocks or remote backcountry roads.
Start with the service record and the correct Subaru schedule
Write down the wagon’s model year, engine, trim and mileage, then gather its maintenance records and Warranty and Maintenance Booklet. Subaru advises following whichever service interval comes first: time or mileage. Its published summaries for 2019 and 2021, for example, include oil and filter service every six months or 6,000 miles, alongside recurring inspections of tires, brakes, axle boots and joints, steering and suspension, cooling hoses, belts, fuel-system connections, wheel bearings and drivetrain fluids. Those are examples for those model years—not a schedule to apply to every Subaru wagon. Check Subaru’s maintenance schedule information and explanation of time-or-mile service intervals, then verify the tasks and fluid requirements in the booklet for the actual car.

Look for missing or unclear records as well as overdue work. A low fluid level, fresh leak, warning light, unusual noise or vibration deserves attention before a remote drive, even if the next scheduled service is not due. Follow the vehicle’s own owner’s manual for fluid checks and procedures; Subaru manuals can vary by year and model.

Tires, spare and changing equipment
- Check tread condition, uneven wear, sidewalls, visible damage and pressure. Use the vehicle and tire makers’ specifications for inflation; do not copy a generic pressure recommendation for desert driving.
- Confirm the spare is present, usable and compatible with this wagon’s wheel and tire fitment. Make sure the jack and lug wrench are present and that you know how to use them safely.
- For rocky or unpaved travel, assess whether the installed tires suit the actual route. The National Park Service warns that street-rated tires can be damaged on rocky routes in Mojave National Preserve and recommends off-pavement tires for its preserve routes. That is destination-specific advice, not a universal tire rule.
- Carry a tire-pressure gauge and portable inflator. The NPS includes both in its desert-driving equipment guidance.
A full-size spare may be useful on a remote trip, but only if the wagon can carry it and the wheel-and-tire combination fits the vehicle.

- Made from durable UV-resistant ABS material
- Rear opening for easy access away from traffic
- Tool-free mounting hardware for easy installation and removal
- Includes key and lock to secure contents in the box, and the box to your rack
Cooling system and drive belts
Check coolant only as the owner’s manual directs. Look for leaks, damaged or deteriorated hoses, and loose or visibly compromised connections; have suspected faults diagnosed before departure. Check belt condition and any due inspections or replacements against the exact maintenance schedule. There is no single desert-specific coolant flush or replacement interval established for every Subaru wagon, so do not substitute one for the manufacturer’s schedule.
Brakes
Have the service brakes inspected, including pads, discs and lines, and check the parking brake. Verify brake-fluid service against the correct model-year booklet: Subaru’s schedule examples include brake inspections and brake-fluid replacement, but details vary by year.

Steering, suspension, bearings and axles
Listen for new clunks, humming or vibration, and have steering and suspension components, wheel bearings, axle boots and joints inspected if their condition is uncertain. Torn boots can expose joints to contamination. These systems appear in Subaru’s schedule examples, but the required task and interval depend on the vehicle.

Transmission and differentials
Review the transmission and differential service history and check the correct booklet for fluid specifications and due work. Do not assume that a fluid interval or procedure from another Subaru year, engine or transmission applies to this wagon.

Filters and fuel-system connections
Check the schedule for air-cleaner service and inspections of fuel-system lines and connections. Have leaks or damaged components addressed rather than treating a basic pre-trip visual check as a substitute for repair.
Match the car and equipment to the route
“Desert road” can mean maintained pavement, graded dirt, rocky tracks, deep sand or remote backcountry. Each brings different demands. A high-mileage wagon’s suitability cannot be determined from the Subaru badge alone: compare its ground clearance, tires, spare capacity and condition with the current route information from the managing agency. The National Park Service’s Mojave National Preserve safety guidance discusses off-pavement risks, remote breakdowns and limited cell coverage; follow it for that preserve, not as a guarantee about roads elsewhere.

| Trip type | What to verify | Key consequence to plan for |
|---|---|---|
| Paved touring | Routine maintenance, tire condition and pressure, spare and changing tools, brakes and cooling-system condition | A breakdown may still delay travel; identify fuel, water and service availability along the route. |
| Maintained dirt or rocky road | All paved-trip checks, plus route-specific clearance and tire suitability, spare capacity, inflator and pressure gauge | Rough surfaces and tire damage can make assistance slower or harder to reach. |
| Deep sand, rough backcountry or isolated tracks | Current agency guidance, vehicle specifications and condition, route difficulty, recovery and communication capability, and whether the trip should be attempted in this vehicle at all | Getting stuck or suffering a mechanical failure may become a remote emergency; do not treat ordinary road readiness as proof of off-road suitability. |
Check current closures and conditions with the agency responsible for the specific road. Do not assume a route is open or appropriate because it appears on a map or another vehicle has used it.
Pack for a tire problem and a delayed rescue
- Bring a working tire-pressure gauge, portable inflator, suitable spare, jack and lug wrench.
- Carry enough water and food for the route and possible delay, plus first-aid supplies, a map and a communication method appropriate to the area.
- Tell someone your route and expected return time. In places with limited cell service, plan for communications that do not depend on a mobile signal.
- Check local hazards before departure, including heat, flash-flood risk, water availability and road closures.
The Bureau of Land Management’s Sonoran Desert National Monument visitor guidance says summer temperatures may exceed 110°F, advises visitors to bring water because none is available there, and warns that flash floods can make washes dangerous. It recommends planning on one gallon (4 L) of drinking water per person per day, more for strenuous activity. Those figures and warnings apply to that monument and its conditions, not every desert destination. The NPS also notes limited cell coverage in Mojave National Preserve and recommends satellite communication for backcountry areas; check the communications advice for your destination.
