Before buying an older Subaru wagon, inspect the body in daylight, look for signs of corrosion or concealment underneath, and have an independent mechanic examine the car on a lift if structural rust or questionable repairs are possible. Pay particular attention to frame and subframe areas, suspension mounts, and the wagon’s history in places that use road salt. A documented Subaru campaign applies to certain 2000–2002 Legacy and Outback vehicles—not every older Subaru.
Start with the wagon’s history and campaign record
Ask where the car has spent winters and whether roads there were regularly treated with salt. Request maintenance records and any paperwork for rust repairs or underbody coating. A car’s appearance alone may not reveal the corrosion risk associated with years of salt exposure.

Check the VIN with Subaru or an authorized dealer for relevant open or completed campaigns. Subaru’s Product Campaign Bulletin WWM-96R concerns rear suspension subframe corrosion on 2000–2002 model-year Legacy and Outback vehicles. It warns that extensive operation in a salt-belt area could allow continued salt exposure to rust through and possibly break the rear subframe, affecting vehicle control. The bulletin was revised February 10, 2025. It does not establish that every vehicle in those years is rusty, or that other years are rust-free. Read Subaru’s WWM-96R campaign bulletin.
NHTSA advises buyers to check underneath for rust or corrosion that is unusual for the vehicle’s age and location. Its consumer guidance concerns hurricane- and flood-damaged vehicles, so use that advice as a general inspection prompt, not as a Subaru-specific checklist. Walk around the body and look for clues
Use daylight and a small inspection light to check the lower body, where damage can be easier to spot. Look for bubbling paint, swelling seams, flaking layers, holes, mismatched paint, filler, and patch panels. Fresh, thick, peeling, or locally applied undercoating can make the metal harder to assess; coating is not proof that the underlying metal is sound.
- Check rocker panels, lower door edges, wheel openings, and visible pinch welds.
- Look at hatch or tailgate edges, cargo-floor edges, and window and windshield surrounds.
- Inspect seam sealer for cracks, swelling, or signs of previous work.
- Open the doors and, where practical, lift the cargo floor to check for dampness, staining, or corrosion at seams.
- Notice whether corrosion is returning around an old repair, and ask for documentation of any repair or coating.
These are practical places to look on a used wagon, not a model-specific Subaru defect list. A flashlight helps reveal shadowed areas, but it cannot show every surface of a frame rail or establish that a component is structurally sound. Do not rely on a magnet as a pass-or-fail test: body materials, filler, coatings, and panel construction vary.

Have the underside inspected on a lift
A buyer should not crawl beneath a car supported only by a jack. If underside condition is uncertain, ask an independent mechanic experienced in pre-purchase inspections to raise the vehicle using appropriate shop equipment. Subaru’s technical frame inspection procedure calls for visual inspection and describes further inspection with the vehicle raised when corrosion is present. It also cautions that rusted metal may flake; it is service material for inspection, not an instruction for a buyer to strike or scrape parts. Read Subaru’s frame inspection procedure hosted by NHTSA.

Do not treat a measurement or inspection criterion in a manufacturer procedure as a universal legal standard for every model or jurisdiction. The relevant procedure, vehicle, and local rules matter.
Decide whether the rust is a deal breaker
There is no single rust pass-or-fail threshold established for every Subaru wagon, model year, and jurisdiction. A mechanic’s lift inspection and written findings are more useful than a vague judgment based on the color or amount of surface rust.

- Surface discoloration: Ask the mechanic whether the metal is still sound and whether any treatment or monitoring is appropriate.
- Deep scale, swelling, or perforation: Pause the purchase until a qualified shop assesses the affected areas and provides a repair estimate.
- Rust at a structural or suspension mounting area, visible deformation, or concealed corrosion: Treat it as a stop-and-investigate condition. Do not assume it is safe or economical to repair.
- Unclear repairs or fresh coating hiding the surface: Ask for documentation and a professional assessment before deciding.
When comparing wagons, weigh the location and extent of corrosion, whether it reaches structural or suspension attachment areas, the quality and paperwork for past repairs, salt-belt exposure, VIN-specific campaign history, and the independent inspection findings and estimate. If structural damage is extensive or the repair cost is uncertain, walk away or have a qualified repairer assess the car before purchase.

Use vehicle-history records for context, not diagnosis
If you are concerned about flood or title history, NHTSA points buyers to the National Motor Vehicle Title Information System (NMVTIS). A history report can provide context, but it cannot establish the car’s current corrosion condition or replace an in-person inspection. The physical inspection is what can reveal rust that affects the vehicle today.
