Do not assume another charger uses the same lights or sequence.
Work through these checks in order rather than repeatedly removing and reinserting the pack without changing anything. First establish that the charger is connected to a working power source, then check the seating and temperature, and only then interpret the indicator or compare components. This order helps avoid mistaking an inactive outlet or an expected temperature delay for a failed battery. Do not force the pack into place: if it does not seat as intended, verify the documented compatibility of the battery and charger.

Check whether temperature is delaying charging
A pack that is too warm or too cold may trigger a hot/cold delay rather than indicate a failed battery. DEWALT recommends charging at an ambient temperature of 65–75°F (18–24°C) and warns not to charge below 40°F (4.5°C) or above 104°F (40°C), according to its battery and charger instructions.
Move the pack to a suitable indoor location and let it return naturally to an appropriate temperature before trying again. Do not use a heater, hot water, a freezer, or another external heat or cooling source. If the charger shows a delay indicator, consult the label or manual for that exact model: indicator colors and patterns are not universal across DEWALT chargers.
The important distinction is that a delay is not the same as a confirmed battery failure. If the pack has just been used or stored in conditions outside DEWALT’s recommended charging range, give it time to return to an appropriate indoor temperature. Do not try to speed that up with a heat source or cold storage. After the pack has had time to acclimate, reconnect it and check the model-specific instructions for the meaning of the lights. If the same problem continues under suitable conditions, move on to the outlet, charger, and service checks rather than assuming temperature is still the cause.
Use the light pattern as a clue, not a diagnosis
Read the charger’s own label and manual before interpreting its lights. A light is useful because it can tell you what to investigate next, but do not treat it as a verdict that the battery or charger is bad. In particular, no-light behavior can have more than one explanation. A working outlet, a fully seated pack, and the correct manual for the charger are more useful than relying on a pattern remembered from a different DEWALT model.

If charging begins and stops, check the simple external conditions again: the outlet should remain powered, and the pack should not be in a hot/cold delay. On a fan-cooled model, keep the ventilation openings clear and do not continue operating it if its fan is malfunctioning. If the issue persists after those checks, consult the charger documentation and arrange service. Do not try to defeat a delay or fault by repeatedly cycling power or manipulating the battery contacts.
Isolate the battery or charger with compatible equipment
Only cross-test if you have equipment confirmed compatible with the battery platform and charger. Change one component at a time so the result is interpretable:

- Try a known-good compatible battery on the suspect charger. If it also fails, the charger may be at fault.
- Try the suspect battery on a known-good compatible charger. If that pack alone fails while the other setup works, the battery may be faulty.
- If results are mixed, equipment compatibility is uncertain, or you do not have a known-good component, stop testing and contact DEWALT or an authorized service center.
These comparisons are diagnostic clues, not a manufacturer guarantee. Do not force a pack onto a charger or substitute a charger just because the connector appears to fit. Confirm the battery voltage/platform and charger compatibility in the product documentation.
To answer “How do I know if the battery or charger is bad?”, look for a repeatable difference while holding the other part of the setup constant. If a known-good compatible pack charges on the suspect charger, but the suspect pack fails on that charger and another compatible charger, the battery may be the issue. If multiple known-good compatible packs fail on one charger, while they work on another compatible charger, the charger may be the issue. Clean only the exterior, and avoid risky fixes
If exterior dirt is present, disconnect the charger from AC first. DEWALT’s instructions permit cleaning with a cloth or soft, non-metallic brush and warn against water and cleaning solutions. Keep contacts dry, and do not scrape, probe, bridge, or otherwise manipulate them.
Never open a lithium-ion battery, bypass its protection circuitry, connect wires across its terminals, or attempt a “jump start.” These actions can cause injury or damage. A damaged pack should go through a service center or the appropriate battery collection or recycling channel.
Cleaning here means removing exterior dirt only; it does not mean trying to repair the charging contacts or get inside the pack. Disconnecting the charger before exterior cleaning and using only the permitted cloth or soft non-metallic brush keeps the task within the manufacturer’s guidance. Do not use water or cleaning solutions, and do not insert a tool into the charger or battery to clear or reshape anything. If contamination or damage appears to involve the contacts or the inside of either component, stop and request service.
Get service before buying a replacement
If outlet, seating, and temperature checks do not help, or the charger displays a persistent fault, take the battery and charger to DEWALT or an authorized service center. DEWALT says an authorized technician evaluates a product against the applicable warranty, and proof of purchase may be required. Its US support page, updated February 14, 2023, listed more than 1,000 authorized independent repair shops; locations and availability may change. Check the current repair guidance for options.
Have the receipt, model number, and product/date code available. Warranty length and exclusions depend on the product and geography, so verify the current DEWALT warranty terms for your specific item before deciding whether to replace it.

Before contacting service, note what you have already checked: whether another appliance works in the receptacle, whether the pack clicks fully into place, whether its temperature was suitable, and what the charger’s own label or manual says about the light pattern. Why won’t my DEWALT battery charge?
